Instruction : Answer question No. 1 and any five of the following. 1. Answer ten questions of the following :

a) Explain why the rate of reaction of [Ni(NH3)4]2+ is about 20 times greater than that for [Ni(en)2]2+. b) Define migratory insertion reaction with an example. c) Why is the rate at which ligands leave the coordination sphere of low-spin Fe2+ complexes different from that for high-spin Fe2+ complexes ? d) What does 450 indicate in cyt P-450 ? Why it is known as detoxifying agent ? e) Explain why nature has adopted several electron carriers between NADH and O2 in respiratory chain. f) What are ionophores ? Give their importance in biological system. g) Name the essential elements in the order of their abundance and list out functions of any one of them. h) Explain the Perutz mechanism. i) Draw the active site structures of 2Fe-2S and 4Fe-4S proteins. j) What is the chelating antidote used for toxicity due to plutonium ? Why is it preferred over others ? k) Name one agent each involved in in vivo and in vitro dinitrogen fixation. l) Hemoglobin exhibits cooperativity while myoglobin does not. Explain. P.T.O.

2. a) Indicate the steps involved in the base catalyzed substitution reactions of [Co(NH3)5Cl]2+. b) Based on Marcus theory, explain the following : [Fe(CN)6]4– + [IrCl6]2– → [Fe(CN)6]3– + [IrCl6]3– c) Distinguish between inert and labile complexes with suitable examples. (5+4+3=12) 3. a) Discuss the mechanism of an outer-sphere electron transfer reaction with an example. What are the characteristics of outer-sphere electron transfer reactions ? b) What is trans effect ? Using trans effect, suggest the method for the preparation of three isomers of [Pt(NH3) (py) BrCl] from [PtCl4]2–. c) Explain reductive elimination and oxidative addition reactions with suitable examples. What are the essential conditions for these to occur?

4. a) Name some potential anticancer agents. Discuss the possible mechanism of its drug action. b) Discuss the factors that affect the rate of substitution in octahedral complexes. c) Explain the importance of Ca2+ in muscle contraction.

5. a) Discuss the binding and release of Na+ and K+ ions in biosystem with neat diagrams. b) Explain the mechanism of storage of iron in non-toxic form in the body. c) Write a note on any two essential metals deficiency and treatment for the same.
