2016-2017 Digital Learning Course Offerings Digital learning is an increasingly important aspect of a child’s education. Students must be empowered to learn skills that prepare them for an ever changing technologically advanced world. The role of the instructional technology specialists is to coach and train staff on growing their own digital capacity to be able to properly infuse digital tools in any curriculum area.The Instructional Technology team is excited to work with you and the school staff. A professional development catalog of offerings is available for you to select and customize based on the identified needs of the staff. It is our pleasure to help your staff maximize academic achievement for every child in a personalized, 21st-century learning environment. Please contact your school’s assigned i nstructional technology specialist to schedule training dates for: ● Whole staff meetings (before or after school) ● Individual training sessions with a single staff or small group ● Co-teach a digitally infused lesson with a teacher ● Team planning meetings: ○ Whole day (meet with each team during planning) ○ Multi day scheduled training ● School Office hours- Drop-in where teachers can stop by individually or in groups. Digital Learning Course Offerings Learning Management System (LMS) What is a Learning Management System? A Learning management system (LMS) is a software platform that allows training, teaching and interactive presentations to be delivered over the internet. Canvas
Canvas is the newly adopted Learning Management System for the state of North Carolina. Canvas connects directly to PowerSchool and the teachers classes and rosters will pull automatically from PowerSchool for creation. Teachers can create announcements, assignments, modules, and quizzes for students within Canvas and all grades from Canvas will talk directly to PowerSchool.
Digital Citizenship Digital Citizenship
Digital Citizenship should be an ongoing conversation in schools where students use technology inside or outside the classroom. According to the upcoming Digital Teaching and Learning Competencies that will go into effect in 2017, educators should be able to “model and teach digital citizenship by the ethical, respectful, and safe use of digital tools and resources that support the creation of a positive digital school culture.” (2017). Digital Citizenship training will introduce staff to the elements of digital citizenship and provide resources, such as Common Sense Media, which can be used to educate students about life in a digital world.
Google Apps for Education (GAfE) Did you know that Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools is a Google App for Education(GAfE) District? teacher Staff and students have a GAfE account that allows them to use Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Forms, and Google Classroom. There are a variety of options for trainings that fall under the Google headline.
Google Drive
Google drive is a central location that houses all of your Google made Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc. A lot of people connect Google Drive to the same idea as the shared folder their school might already use. However, Google Drive has unlimited storage! In a Google Drive training I go over how to access Google Drive, how to upload documents you already have to Google Drive, how to create and organize new files and folders, and how to share files and folders from Drive.
Google Forms
Google Forms is a game changer! Google Forms can be used in a variety to ways to collect information/data. Once a form is turned in all the responses are automatically collected on a single spreadsheet for you to view. There are new features for the 2016-2017 school year that allow you to create self-grading quizzes and use forms during presentations to collect data.
Google Apps/ Add-ons/ Extensions
Did you know that you can split your screen in half so you can do work side-by-side and then put it back together using Tab Scissors and Tab Glue? If you didn’t, this training is for you! Google Apps, add-ons, and extensions are designed with you in mind to make things easier for you and your students. In this training, you will learn how to access the Chrome Web Store and be exposed to a variety of helpful apps, add-ons, and extensions.
Chrome & Your Chromebook
In this training we will go over the Chrome Browser and all of its neat features to help make your life easier. We will also focus on the Chromebook and go over some of the shortcuts and other useful information about the device.
Pedagogy Pedagogy focuses on the method and practice of teaching. TPACK and SAMR are two frameworks that are used to help teaches realize how to infuse technology effectively in the classroom. TPACK
TPACK is a framework for teacher knowledge for technology integration. Using a game, this training will show teachers that technology should be the last piece of integration into a lesson plan. TPACK focuses on the what and how of teaching before the technology component.
SAMR
SAMR is a model designed to help educators infuse technology into teaching and learning. The model supports and enables teachers to design, develop, and infuse digital learning experiences that utilize technology. The goal is to transform learning experiences so they result in higher levels of achievement for students. Using a game, we will help teachers develop lessons that transform student learning.
Blended Learning Blended Learning
In this training, we will go over the four models of blended learning with a large focus on one of the easiest models to begin, the station rotation model. Tips and tricks for starting this model in your classroom will be shared. We will also look at tools, such as Blendspace, to help teachers personalize student learning. This tool allows teachers to create playlists for individuals or groups of students that focuses on a specific objective.
Flipped Communication
This training will focus on flipping parent communication in the classroom. Instead of sending home a weekly newsletter that gets lost in the backpack, teachers can create short videos that show off the learning that happened in their class that week.
Classroom Management This training will focus on tips for managing your classroom where each student has access to devices for instruction. We will explore desk arrangements and key phrases during instruction to help successfully integrate computers into the classroom.

Chromebook Students in grades 4-12 at every school have access to a device every day. This training will go over some of the functional features of chromebooks including keyboard shortcuts and how to take a screenshot on a device.
