INTENSIVE COURSE BARCELONA 2018 MIND, LAND AND ARCHITECTURE 4-5-6-7-JUNE 2018 THE NEW HUMAN CONDITIONS FOR AN INNOVATIVE RESEARCH ARCHITECTURAL AND URBAN DESIGN THEORIES AND PRACTICES

ON

FIRST DAY: THE ARCHITECTS MIND FROM ARISTOTLE TO GAUDI The human condition of the spatial and temporal intuitive knowledge produced by architects, and the new epistemological findings in neurology, anthropology, psychology, philosophy, etc. (Pierre Kaufmann, Rainer Zimmermann, Richard Bodéüs, Paul Ricoeur, Edwin Hutchins, etc.) SECOND DAY: THE AVANT-GARDE REVOLUTION REVISITED From structuralism to hermeneutic post-global theories, with Paul Ricoeur, Lewis Mumford, Mikhail Bakhtin, Jean Piaget and others. The Existential fundamentalism by Heidegger recently uncovered. The re-activation of the avant-garde activity in order to neutralize the elimination of the political power of abstraction. THIRD DAY: THE SOCIO-PHYSICAL THEORIES OF PLANNING The key positions of Bill Hillier, Alberto Magnaghi and the chronotopic epistemological gaps by Mikhail Bakhtin. The power of place and the freedom of the form. Knowledge and the empty form in a post-global word, that is: going back towards the future. FOURTH DAY: THE NEW THEORETICAL FRAMES FROM A TOPOGENETIC VIEWPOINT IN ORDER TO DEVELOP INNOVATIVE PHD DISSERTATIONS The epistemological gaps by Bakhtin contain new knowledge possibilities in relation to the meaning of forms in architecture, by linking transparencies, with health and aesthetic values of life. There is a provisional list of the main topics involved.…

ANNEX OF THE INTENSIVE COURSE BARCELONA 2018 JOSEP MUNTAÑOLA IN EDUCATION PhD Dissertations about how children develop the architectural knowledge or cognition, and how architecture and urban planning can be learn. Works by Roger Hart and Josep Muntañola are pioneer. New PhD Dissertations by Sergi Méndez (UPC, Barcelona), Melina Pozo (US, Sevilla) and Rubén Pineda (UB, Barcelona). PhD Dissertations about the best ways to organise schools of architecture, and the best design workshops in these schools with or without freedom for each student in order to choose program, place or architectural values. Or in the opposite way, designs in the same place and with the same program for all the students in the course. In Europe the best research is the one by professor Constantin Spiridonidis from Thessaloniki with a lot of books published by the EAAE, the European Association of Schools of Architecture. PhD Dissertations about the crossing points between history of architecture and history of education, and their political and cultural implications. The dissertation by Melina Pozo is a first input. Pioneer works: THE ARCHITECT Chapters in the History of the Profession, edited by Professor Spiro Kostof that was a key first step, and THE EDUCATION OF THE ARCHITECT: historiography, urbanism, and the growth of architectural knowledge edited by Martha Pollack as a second step. (Also some articles by Professor Josep Muntañola) IN THE PRODUCTION OF ARCHITECTURE PhD Dissertations about how the way knowledge is produced in the professional studios, in relation to specific architects in a more comparative way. The works by Albena Yaneva have been a first step, but a lot of work is needed. See works by Lluís Ángel Domínguez on Alvar Aalto, Shlomi Almagor on Steven Holl, Rafael Reyes on Alvaro Siza, Montserrat Bigas on Enric Miralles, José Fernández-Llebrez Muñoz on Aldo van Eyck, and Chiara Pia Granzotto on Salmona PhD Dissertations on the cultural context of each architect in a dialogical social way, according with the Aby Warburg studies on art where the position of each artist is related to the answer that he or she insert in the production of art. The dissertation by José Fernández-Llebrez Muñoz about Aldo Van Eyck is a good example of cultural dialogical biography. Of course all the works by Bakhtin in the literary realms is a paradigm of this kind of research. PhD Dissertations about the architectural sustainability considered as a crossing point between the local and the global qualities of each piece of architecture. The interaction between nature and technology is here essential. PhD Dissertations about the knowledge produced by the interplay between the brain and the computer, and between the biological factors and the sociological ones.

PhD Dissertations by Carmelo Zappulla, Borja Ferrater, and the seminal books of neurology by the Nobel Prize Eric Kandel and others are just the first step on a very long way. PhD Dissertations about the production of knowledge on a design by research, where the design process is the object of study. The pioneer works by Jean Piaget and followers are first steps. Works by Rainer Zimmermann are post-global new theories, but the history of mathematics can still uncover a lot of surprises. PhD Dissertations about the reactivation of good architecture in an inter-artistic way, by the interplay between arts, such as music, dance, etc. This was announced by the renaissance theoreticians such as Leon Battista Alberti, but little has been done since. The space syntax analyses and the isovists analyses, etc, have found interesting relationships, but a heavy dialogical theoretical frame is lacking in spite the work by Mikhail Bakhtin and Jean Genet intuitions. IN RELATION TO PARTICIPATION IN PLANNING PhD Dissertations about the simulation of design planning processes, with new hermeneutic post-global paradigms, with new socio-physical possibilities. PhD Dissertations about the socio-physical attachments at places where people live. According to a diversity of theoretical frames. PhD Dissertations about the role of participation and the danger of colonialistic o paternalistic planning processes. Look to the “territorialisti” model by Alberto Magnaghi very close to the topogenetic and dialogical way. PhD Dissertations about how the multiculturality, the preservation of the identities and the dangers of gentrification can be incorporated on the participatory and alternative planning. PhD Dissertations about postevaluation and refigurative analyses of buildings and cities. In all all these topics works by Lewis Mumford, Alberto Magnaghi and Marcelo Zárate are good references in a very complex scenario, as the works by Richard Sennett, Saskia Sassen, Manuel Castells or David Harvey make evident. Also a good first step is Topogenesis volume 2 by Josep Muntañola. THEORETICAL EXPLORATIONS PhD Dissertations are needed able to link the three epistemological gaps defined by Mikhail Bakhtin, in an unique theoretical viewpoint, crossing design and history as Paul Ricoeur intended to do with the book on Memory, History, Forgetting, where a dialogical dimension of hermeneutics can be built in architecture, since architecture as place implies just all this interplay between the three epistemological conditions of the human life, the “gaps” that preserve the life, or the critical distances defined by Ricoeur, that is, the exact distances necessary to see clearly what you need to see, and get in this way the transparency between the past and the future That J.W.Goethe was looking for…
