Mt.  Blue  Campus  International  Student  Program  

 

 

Expectations  of  International  Students     The  following  are  expectations  for  your  participation  in  the  Mt.  Blue  Campus  International   Homestay  Student  Program  (the  “Program”):     Ø The  student  must  speak  English  while  in  the  household.     Ø The  student  will  not  do  household  chores  but  will  help  with  doing  his/her  own  laundry,   help  to  prepare  meals  and  tidy  his/her  room  or  any  other  areas  he/she  occupies  in  the   home.     Ø The  student  will  participate  in  family  activities.     Ø The  student  is  not  allowed  to  drive  an  automobile.     Ø The  student  is  expected  to  attend  school  regularly.    A  note  from  a  doctor  or  homestay   parent  must  be  provided  if  class  will  be  missed.     Ø Homestay  families  have  the  right  to  access  report  cards,  attendance  reports  and  also   have  the  privilege  to  attend  parent  teacher  meetings.     Ø Mt.  Blue  High  School  policies  apply  to  all  international  students.    All  students  are   expected  to  follow  these  policies  and  to  become  familiar  with  the  Mt.  Blue  High  School   Student  Handbook.     Ø International  students  are  expected  to  follow  “appropriate  dress”  as  indicated  in  the   Mr.  Blue  student  handbook.     Ø Communication  with  the  homestay  parent(s)  is  important  to  prevent   misunderstandings.    The  student  must  tell  the  family  if  he/she  plans  on  returning  home   late  or  miss  a  family  meal.     Ø Sleeping  at  a  friend’s  house  during  the  week  is  not  permitted.    On  weekends,  the   homestay  family  must  approve  of  any  sleepovers.    The  student  must  provide  the  name,   address  and  telephone  number  of  where  he/she  is  staying  so  the  homestay  family  can   contact  him/her.    The  student  is  not  at  liberty  to  come  and  go  as  he/she  pleases.     Ø Homestay  parents  have  the  right  to  set  nightly  curfews  and  monitor  time  spent  out  on   the  weekdays.    Appropriate  time  must  be  dedicated  to  doing  schoolwork.     Ø  

 

 

Ø The  student  must  maintain  a  full  course  of  study.    He/she  must  also  take  an  English   course.    Full  year  students  must  take  U.S.  History.    The  student  must  maintain  a  C   average.   Ø The  student  must  respect  the  individual  rules  of  the  household  and  be  respectful  to   his/her  homestay  parent(s)  and  all  other  individuals  who  reside  with  the  homestay   parent(s).     Ø The  student  may  not  lend  money  to  or  borrow  money  from  the  homestay  family  or   other  students.     Ø The  student  is  responsible  for  paying  for  his/her  own  personal  effects  and  toiletries,   clothing,  snacks,  leisure  and  sport  activities,  school  articles,  dental  or  medical  fees,   travel,  postage  for  letters  and  long-­‐distance  calls.    The  student  is  responsible  for   managing  his  or  her  own  budget  and  is  encouraged  to  open  his  or  her  own  bank   account.     Ø The  student  will  be  responsible  for  purchasing  his/her  own  cell  phone  and  incurring  any   charges  for  long  distance  calls  he/she  makes  from  the  homestay  house  phone.     Ø The  legal  age  to  purchase  cigarettes  in  the  USA  is  18  and  many  families  will  not  allow   this  in  their  home.    Many  Maine  buildings  prohibit  smoking  including  schools  and   restaurants.    Failure  to  comply  with  these  legal  regulations  may  result  in  expulsion  from   the  Program.     Ø The  student  may  not  use  illegal  drugs.      The  student  may  not  drink  any  alcohol  if  under   the  age  of  21.    Failure  to  comply  may  result  in  expulsion  from  the  program.     Ø The  student  may  not  alter  his/her  body  during  their  stay  (for  example:  tattoos,   additional  piercing,  etc.)     Ø The  length  of  a  shower/bath  and  the  time  of  day  for  a  shower  or  bath  must  be  mutually   agreeable  within  each  homestay  arrangement.     Ø The  student  may  not  bring  guests  into  the  home  without  the  homestay  family’s   permission.     Ø The  student  will  be  responsible  for  paying  for  any  damage  caused  by  the  student  to  the   host  family’s  home  and/or  belongings.     Ø The  student  may  not  work  at  a  part  time  job  that  requires  a  social  security  number  or   work  authorization.    He/she  may,  however,  work  intermittently  to  shovel  snow,  mow   the  lawn  or  babysit.     Ø The  student  may  not  travel  overnight  unless  he/she  is  accompanied  by  a  chaperone  who   is  at  least  21  years  of  age.    Traveling  should  not  interfere  with  schoolwork  and  should  be   2  

 

done  during  breaks  and  holidays.    Travel  must  be  approved  by  the  homestay  family.     Ø The  student  must  have  his/her  own  medical  insurance  upon  arrival  to  the  U.S.,  and  for   the  entire  duration  of  the  Program,  and  will  have  a  local  physician  identified  before   homestay  placement.    The  student  must  obtain  an  insurance  policy  from  the  list  of   approved  insurance  providers  included  in  the  parental  consent.     Ø Any  issues  or  concerns  that  arise  must  be  directed  to  the  International  Student  Program   Director  of  the  Mt.  Blue  Campus  immediately.
