Wells Fargo CEO Resigns After Account Fraud Chairman and CEO of Wells Fargo, John Stumpf, retired on Wednesday Oct. 12, effective immediately. This comes in the wake of Wells Fargo employees creating almost two million consumer deposit and credit card accounts since 2011 without customer consent, and in the wake of Sen. Elizabeth Warren denouncing him and urging him to resign. The source of the problem comes from unrealistic quotas being heavily enforced, which in turn forced workers to falsify accounts. These accounts in some cases caused customers to be charged fees for accounts that they did not know existed. Over 5,300 employees have been laid off, the majority of whom claim was done so unfairly. Two former employees have filed class-action lawsuits against the company. Despite paying $185 million in penalties, the company is still facing private lawsuits and other regulatory investigations. One of which is by the Labor Department, who is investigating whether or not the company fired those employees, who did create fraudulent accounts, under valid circumstances. Stumpf’s retirement, however, does little to create a new, more trustworthy Wells Fargo. President and Chief Operation Director Tim Sloan was elected CEO following Stumpf’s retirement. the company has a “specific action plan,” and that the company will be making the “necessary changes” to fix the problem. The sales goals program in question gave employees “financial rewards,” according to the Los Angeles City Attorney for completing unrealistic sales quotas.

Sept. 13, Wells Fargo announced that it will be terminating the controversial sales goals program, effective Jan. 1, 2017. However after much backlash over said announcement, the company announced that the program would end Oct. 1, 2016. Long term effects of this scandal are unknown as of now, but the bank is already facing lowered numbers of earnings, checking accounts openings, down 30 percent in

September from August, and mortgage referrals, which are down by 24 percent from the previous year, according to Wells Fargo. Even though immediate numbers are down, the company is not sure if these numbers will become a recurring trend or if they are short term results that will begin to raise again after the scandal has blown over. Other consequences include the Chicago City Council suspending business with the company for the next year; the California and other cities and states issued similar policies. This includes underwiring, trustee services, and other services. Both of these business suspensions will end up costing Wells Fargo over $19 million dollars. Wells Fargo has already outlined a few ways in which they will be improving their customer support, a few of which include sending confirmation emails to customers opening new accounts and electronic signatures will be required for all new account applications. Wells Fargo is also working on improving their ethics abuses hotline to make sure that those who do call the hotline are not retaliated against. The company has announced a new mystery-shopper-esque program where people will go undercover to ensure that employees are doing their jobs correctly.

The contentious Dakota Access Pipeline remains in persistent battle between protesters and the pipeline company in charge of installing the 1,172 mile project that will, if completed, run underground from the Bakken production areas in North Dakota to Patoka, Illinois. In July, the Standing Rock Sioux filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers asking for an initial ruling to halt the construction of the pipeline on the grounds that the proposed pipeline will travel through many areas of cultural significance and it would also pass under the Missouri River, just a half a mile up the river from the Tribe’s reservation boundary, where an accident could be disastrous to the community. Transporting approximately 470,000570,000 barrels per day, the pipeline could constitute nearly half of current Bakken crude oil production. Depending on government ruling and approval, the pipeline could be primed for use by the end of 2016.

Dakota Pipeline Protests Continue Henry Charman

THE HELLGATE LANCE

The clash between the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the company has turned into a national movement. In April, a small protest camp was set up on the Standing Rock Reservation, but the population of the camp has increased to over 1,000 people. While the protests remain primarily peaceful, numerous arrests have been made of protesters, journalists, and reporters. In Sept., award-winning journalist Amy Goodman was taken into custody after a warrant was issued for her arrest under the allegations that she participated in a “riot”, which are serious offenses that could have lead to months in jail, after she filmed Dakota Access security guards using pepper spray and attack dogs on protesters. Judge John Grinsteiner overturned the case, ruling that the state did not have probable cause for the charges, although the state’s attorney refused to say if his office would denounce the prosecution of Goodman.

Miller Commodifies Students On Oct. 7, following the Hellgate High Editorials Editor School Homecoming pep assembly, Principal Miller spoke to the senior class, attempting to address controversial choices he’s made for our school. He discussed the locker arrangement, school renovations, and finally, the ban of the “Letter Girls”. The first two topics went a lot more smoothly than the last. Principal Miller stated that the Letter Girls were too exclusive. This is true. He said that letterman jackets have a long history of being used as a sign of possession of women. This is true, but it does not apply to the Letter Girls seeing as the vast majority (if not all) of the girls participating earned their own jackets through athletic and academic achievement. Miller also said that publishing pictures of girls in their sports bras in the school yearbook would objectify women. I understand where he was coming from with this comment, but ultimately if you see women as objects at all, then that is your own fault. While Principal Miller’s arguments weren’t flawless, they were generally delivered with good intentions. However, my issue is with what Miller said next: “I like to see our school as a company. Our students are the brand.” How can one denounce objectification and then support it in the same argument? Principal Miller highlighted one of the fundamental flaws of the modern school system, and that is the commodification of students. Let me make one thing abundantly clear: the entire purpose of school is to educate and support students. The purpose is not to give the administration Sarah Hendryx

a fat paycheck. Schools should not be viewed as companies. Students are not commodities; we are real people with individual views that need to be expressed. Principal Miller should not view us as money-makers. He should view us with the respect that administration constantly denies us. Principal Miller, while well-qualified, does not understand Hellgate. We are well-known for being an extremely individualistic, diverse school where few restrictions are placed upon students’ ability to express themselves. Each student is vital to the school, and by comparing us to a company’s brand, Principal Miller has insulted every one of us. However, it’s not just Miller that’s the problem; it’s the American school system. Through standardized testing and Common Core, human individuality is entirely neglected. No student can thrive in an environment where their unique traits aren’t valued. Students need to be supported so they can grow into original, innovative adults, but our current school system merely views students as test scores and dollar signs. Principal Miller, along with the administration, has a lot to learn about his place at Hellgate. Instead of trying to find ways to easier control the student body, Miller ought to find ways for us to better express our individuality and value ourselves. I am tired of feeling like a cog in the machine that is the American school system, when it is that very system that’s supposed to be aiding me-not the other way around.

Why Third Parties Aren’t Worth Your Time It was inevitable. This election season has been so tumultuous, so bitter and bloated with radical rhetoric, wild ideas, and even wilder characters, that we are now witnessing the return of the Terribly Sensible Party. It’s what the citizenry say they want, especially when they’ve been beaten down by enough dinnertime robo calls and TV attack ads: a sensible, moderate, eminently reasonable party that embraces the best ideas of Democrats and Republicans alike. It will arise from the middle of the political spectrum any time now, just as soon as centrists and people of good will from both sides see how right it is. What would such a party look like in practice? We got an idea recently from a pair of major op-ed columnists (the Terribly Sensible Party exists mainly in the minds of op-ed columnists). The moderate-liberal Thomas Friedman wrote in The New York Times earlier this month that “the level of disgust with Washington, D.C., and our two-party system” is so great that it may

well produce a serious third party by 2012. “There is a revolution brewing in this country,” he said, one taking place “in the radical center.” David Brooks, the moderate-conservative columnist just across the page from Friedman, was also fantasizing recently about reasonable people leading a political movement. Like Friedman, he envisions a sensible party that would slash wages and old-age benefits for public workers and use the money to make wise investments in the infrastructure of the future. “The anti-government types perpetually cry less, less, less,” he wrote. “The loudest liberals cry more, more, more. Someday, there will be a political movement that is willing to make choices, that is willing to say, ‘this, but not that.’ ” Don’t hold your breath. It won’t happen because politics just doesn’t work that way. Not electoral politics, and certainly not in the United States. It’s not about reasonable people who think pretty much alike sitting around in a room, saying, “Well, why don’t we do this and not that, and split the difference? Who wants a crumpet?”

Trump Would Rather Dance With Dictators If “President” Putin of Russia believes Donald Trump is “brilliant” while most other international leaders think the opposite, we have a problem. Trump believes he, “would have a very, very good relationship with Putin.” And he says, “I think I would have a very, very good relationship with Russia … [Putin] does have an 82% approval rating.” While Trump’s intentions are admirable at best, his willingness to bend to the will of the bombastic Russian dictator is not someone who should be the face of the nation to our foreign allies. If Trump were to mend American-Russian relations, he would be disregarding the democratic principles which America is built upon by validating the autocratic rule of Russia and it seems as though that is exactly what Trump plans to do. “I’ve already said he is really very much of a leader… I mean, the man has very strong control over a country.” That seems positive, right? I mean, how could we not want to work with an oppressive threat? These are the questions that fail to penetrate Donald Trump’s ignorance. It it is astonishing that Donald Trump would willingly support and work with a provocative dictator that condones violence against American diplomats and intelligence officers, invades foreign neighbors for annexation and supports other dictators around the world like Bashar Al-Assad and Kim Jung Un. Donald Trump’s sympathy towards authoritarian leaders is an existential threat to the livelihoods of the American people, foreign leaders and the global community which is reinforced by his generally isolationist policies. Donald Trump believes in the ideals of American exceptionalism, “American First will be the major and overriding theme of my administration.” His isolationist ideology is further exemplified by a few key policies: building a wall to keep immigrants of South America/Central America out; “Extreme vetting” on immigrants by an ideological test; pushing for NATO and military allies to pay their fair share; and pulling our military personnel from certain countries because we’re “overcommitted”. His policy plans sound remarkably similar to ones which we upheld in the early 20th century, but

the fact of the matter is that America’s role in the international community has changed greatly and Donald’s plans are neither feasible or in line with American values. Trump has incorrectly blamed the Obama administration and Hillary Clinton for the bulk of conflicts in Europe and the Middle East in an attempt to explain that “liberal” international order is ineffective, providing that isolationism would be more beneficial. Perhaps this is part of the reason as to why America’s current foreign allies are scared. The world is glued to the American presidential election awaiting their fate and whether it will be one of terror and instability following the election of Donald Trump. Trump’s policies would undermine American values of equality, tolerance and diversity by severely altering the role that the US plays in the international politics. It’s reasonable that our foreign allies are concerned. Finnish minister of economic affairs expands on the point, “In Europe, we are concerned about the U.S. possibly turning toward a more isolationist orientation. That would not be good for United States, good for Europe, good for the world. We need the U.S. engaged in global affairs in a constructive, positive way.” Our current foreign policy is generally reliant on positive, concerted effort per region, dispute, country, situation. The Obama administration, for example, was heavily reliant on positive, effective diplomacy to alter our relationships with various nations. Pulling out of our diplomatic missions, treaties, and general involvement is not what America has been working towards for nearly a century. Foreign leaders to allied nations tend to agree. French President Francois Hollande believes the election of Donald Trump would be dangerous and., “would complicate relations between Europe and the United States.” Norwegian Prime Minister Edi Rama echoes Hollande’s sentiments, “A lot of what Donald Trump says makes for a more unstable world.” Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega sums up the issues with electing Donald Trump, a man who aspires to the rule of Putin, to office. Ortega believes Trump reflects, “the ultra-conservative, racist, and war-like thinking that is incubated in the roots of the empire.”

Halloween Doesn’t Make Cultural (Mis)Appropriation Okay Seeing white boys rock “Dirty Sanchez” mustaches, sombreros and panchos is not how I like to envision my Halloween. I would much rather see sad renditions of a clown than blatantly offensive “costumes” such as the aforementioned. What I described above is a prime example of cultural appropriation gone wrong. Cultural appropriation is the adoption or use of elements of one culture by members of another culture and it is inevitable. The issue rises with how people choose to represent borrowed elements. Every day we commit acts of appropriation in the jewelry we wear, the music we dance to and the clothing we choose to rock. And we shouldn’t feel bad about it either because appropriating elements from another culture in and of itself is not problematic. In many cases cultural appropriation is beneficial and creative! Sharing aspects of one’s culture is beautiful. Individuality and creativity flourish in the face of cultural appropriation and for such feats we owe other cultures our respect and gratitude for their inherent value and novelty. However, Halloween is a grey area regarding creativity

and beauty in terms of cultural appropriation. Often times people participating in the celebrations of Halloween misinterpret other cultures by the use of hurtful stereotypes. While appreciating one’s culture via specific elements is beautiful, misinterpreting them based on offensive and hate-inspired stereotypes is not. Issues of cultural appropriation have deep roots in cultural communities due to the offensive stereotypes and hateful history surrounding certain key elements which have been upheld and perpetuated for decades. Keeping in mind the relevance of beauty and respect in cultural appropriation, here’s how to avoid offensive cultural appropriation during Halloween and beyond: • Don’t dress up as an ethnic stereotype: someone’s culture or ethnicity should not be used as the kicker of a joke, and beyond joking matters, it is incredibly hurtful and offensive to “dress up” as an incorrect interpretation of another culture. Remember, cultural appropriation at its finest is borrowing aspects of on culture, not reinterpreting the entire culture as a “joke”. • Pay homage to the culture’s history and origins: embody symbolically relevant pieces of one’s culture in a respectful manner and consider the value of said pieces. If you’re going to borrow, consider the cultural relevance.

Don’t adopt sacred articles as accessories: “sexy (ethnicity) costumes” are not sexy, they are downright disrespectful and insensitive. Sacred articles are sacred for a reason, there is history to that culture and should not be worn casually. • Engage with cultures on more than an aesthetic level: to embody parts of one’s culture almost requires that one understands what affects, bothers, and is unfair to that culture. Pieces from another culture don’t exist for the sole purpose of pleasing our eyes or making us laugh. • Give credit to the culture you’re appropriating: do not further perpetuate the already apparent racism and ignorance present in the US. If someone asks what you’re appropriating, you should know. Most Halloween “cultural” costumes are incorrect representations of said culture. They are disrespectful promoters of ignorance which are unnecessary. So, for this Halloween avoid being the target of scrutiny by considering the true value of cultures versus the humorous and stereotypical values. People and their identities should not be used to fuel your pleasure and humor, find some other way to be wacky this Halloween.

Stay on the Right Side of Herstory

Why voting for Hillary is the correct decision for the United States Since I was a child, Hillary Clinton was a familiar name. I knew who she was when I was too young to differentiate between George W. Bush and George Washington. I knew who she was when I went into the second grade with dreams of being the first female NFL player. I knew who Hillary was when I first learned cursive and long division. When I was nine I watched her compete with Barack Obama for the Democratic nomination. It is because I grew up watching Hillary Clinton hold powerful positions in the government that I never thought of anything that women couldn’t achieve because of their gender. It is because of her that I grew up with dreams of being a writer, a politician, a quantum physicist, and a drummer instead of dreaming to be a princess or a model. Hillary was and is a woman who speaks her mind with eloquence and precision. In my eyes, both when I was a child and now, she is the embodiment of intelligence and professionalism. She taught me that my intelligence is of the utmost significance, and that my opinions, as a woman, are both valid and important. I have always felt a strong admiration for Hillary Clinton, and I am extremely honored to have voted for her as President of the United States in my first election. The fact is that regardless of who her opponent may be, Hillary is one of the most qualified people to run for office in recent history, and America would be lucky to have a leader as strong as her. Throughout her adult life, she has been very active in politics. She has continually supported women’s rights through initiatives protecting women from domestic violence, fighting for equal pay for equal work, and keeping planned parenthood open for women in need of healthcare that cannot be easily found elsewhere. and workplace settings. She knows how difficult it is to be seen as professional instead of cold, intelligent instead of a know-it-all, and assertive instead of bossy. She has fought against the bias against women her entire life, and has defied stereotypes and expectations time and time again. Not only has Hillary defended women, but

courtesy of CNBC children too. Before she had even turned 30, she helped found the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families group. She also helped draft a children’s health insurance program which eventually became law. She has raised a successful child herself. If Hillary Clinton can continue her support of children half as much as she has throughout her life, our next generation will be in the best of hands and create a better future once they grow up. Hillary has always been a driven woman. She

worked hard as a lawyer and graduated from Yale. When her husband Bill Clinton became President, she was behind him throughout his presidency, doing her own work that helped contribute to a successful time in office. She was arguably one of the most politically active First Ladies our nation has seen. She also became the Senator of New York, and under the Obama Administration she became secretary of state. She has been an extremely successful and competent politician for over 30 years, and I don’t doubt that she will continue her legacy if we are lucky enough to have her become our President. Hillary has seen what an American presidency entitles, and she is more than well- equipped to handle all of the responsibilities the job involves. She has frequently proven how well she handles controversy, whether it be her husband’s slip-ups or the e-mail scandal. She remained confident in her innocence but was not hesitant to apologize for any mishandling of classified content in the e-mails. She was found innocent after an extremely lengthy FBI investigation. She has shown America that she does not crack under pressure. She is resiliant and perseverant, so much so that even Trump had to admit that she never quits. Hillary has worked very hard for America and all of its citizens her entire life. She has more than earned the right to lead us. She has never been handed anything. She knows that nothing can be accomplished without effort. I know in my heart that Hillary will fight for the rights of women, children, and minorities as our president. She has inspired generations of women and children to be driven and hardworking, and she could continue do to so more than ever before in office. She is refreshingly passionate about the rights of every person in the United States, rather than and elite minority. Hillary Clinton has proved herself to America throughout her life, and I can confidently say, I’m with Her.

Missoula Prepares for Spooky Halloween Attractions The Missoula Haunted House

Mattie Steinberg Features Editor

Once a year, the 7,000-square foot building at the corner of Russell and Brooks located in the Missoula County Fairgrounds becomes home to a week of horror. Thanks to the creative minds of Ben Jacobsen and Richard Davenport, the building that is home to the farm animals during the summer for the County Fair is transformed into the Missoula Haunted House. Davenport and Jacobsen have backgrounds in theatrical set making, video track and sound track production, helping them to create the most thrilling experience they can. They have been making Halloween sets and haunted houses together since they became friends in high school in their hometown of Kalispell, and know each other’s styles and tricks extremely well because of this. The “house” that they created this year is an elaborate theatrical set, with spooky decorations, actors and props meant to overload one’s senses to the point of terror. Unlike many others, the Missoula Haunted House isn’t set up so that one is able to see

what is happening to the people in front of them and therefore be able to expect what’s coming next. Instead, small groups of visitors, five at the most, are allowed through the house at once. This creates the feeling of really being alone while inside the venue, and the fact that the experience is catered specifically to each group makes it that much scarier. The Field of Screams is an exciting, unique and terrifying Halloween experience all rolled into one activity. The first time you go it is hard to know what to expect, as it is kind of a haunted house and corn maze combination. You very well may feel some nervousness when standing in line waiting your turn, as you hear the shrieks of people going through but push past it because you won’t want to miss out on all the fun. The Field of Screams is located all the way out in Victor, Montana, a solid thirty minute drive from Missoula on windy dark roads, but it

is definitely worth the extra mileage (especially when that dark drive builds up some suspense). They are only open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from about seven to ten, but since it began on Oct. 1 and is open all the way until Oct. 31 there are plenty of opportunities to get out there when you find a little free time. The attractions are all located on the side of Highway 93 in an extensive corn field. As you enter the actual attraction you must navigate your way through foggy tunnels, graveyards and even some clown filled playgrounds which is especially scary given the clown situation this fall. Entrance fee is $15, which could be seen as a little pricey, but their limited dates and real fear factor make it acceptable. The experience also lasts almost a full half hour, which is nice because some

haunted attractions can be pretty short lived. The Field of Screams is generally very popular among Missoulians and this will be the seventeenth year they are going strong. They recommend only ages eight and above but other than that, it is enjoyable for a large range of people, as long as you’re into scary stuff. This is especially fun for Missoula high school students and it’s common to see many of your MCPS peers if you decide to venture out one night. Be warned, it is not only darker than you can imagine, but also breathtakingly cold in both the line to get in and the actual field, so wear lots and lots of warm layers! Even if scary stuff hasn’t been your thing in the past grab a bunch of friends and brave your way through because it will most likely be totally worth it in the end. You can never be positive of what to expect when you enter, because I’m sure the creators switch it up every year so even those who keep coming back get a little surprise.

Your Grandfather Wouldn’t Like This Music; A Top Five List of the Best Rap Albums of the Year

Grant Porter Features Editor

2016 has been a good year for rap so far with huge stars and underground rappers all releasing new and good projects. This is a list of the top 5 rap albums of 2016 so far and with so many projects to choose from it was very difficult to narrow it down to just five. THE DIVINE FEMININE; MAC MILLER: The Divine Feminine is Miller’s fourth studio album and it is a total gem. With features from artists like Ty Dolla $ign, and Top Dawg Entertainment heavyweight Kendrick Lamar there was bound to be at least some good music on the project. That being said, the entire project is amazing at showing off the more intellectual side of Miller. Miller recently made the move to New York to escape the wild LA lifestyle and you can hear that change in his music- less feel-good party tracks and more psychedelic tendencies. All in all, the album is absolutely fantastic, Photo courtesy of Wikipedia props to the artist for creating such a work of art. The album seems as if it is the culmination of everything that Miller is as an artist. It signifies a new beginning so to speak from his struggles with drug addiction and everything else that plagued the rapper during his years in Los Angeles. THE SUNS TIRADE; ISAIAH RASHAD: Rashad’s new album is a roller coaster journey of sadness, swagger, and love. Signed to Top Dawg Entertainment the album features Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock and SZA all signed to TDE. With that vast talent pool to pull from, Rashad’s project was enriched to the point of bursting. The album has a tremendous amount of soul and the production is excellent making one yearn for more work from the Tennessee native. BIRDS IN THE TRAP SING MCKNIGHT; Travi$ Scott: Scott’s second studio album is an absolute banger, nothing less. Featured artists on the album include Cleveland Native Kid Cudi as well as the force that is Andre 3000. There is no denying that Scott is a pretty strange character and that is reflected in the album but in an extremely positive way; it adds character and flash to the album and you can almost feel Scott’s emotions

as he rhymes his way through the maze that is his album. The album debuted at number 1 on the billboard charts selling 88,000 copies in the first week alone. The album turned away from Scott’s traditional style of trap rap but that is definitely present in the album, just dialed back to make room for emotional aspects to find their way into the music. Scott’s album is not just good, it’s fantastic.

THE IMPOSSIBLE KID; AESOP ROCK: Rock has been in the rap game for a very long time at this point, he is 40 years old and his latest release is his 7th solo album and it is fantastic. Rock has quite a unique voice and flow and it serves him well on the album. The project gives the listener a unique view into the rapper’s childhood and everything that has made him Photo courtesy of Wikimedia Commons the man he is today, it shows off a twisted psyche and a troubled mind. Rock is one of the best lyricists in the rap game and he shows it off in The Impossible Kid, spitting hard bars and rhyming with an eloquence that only Rock could achieve. THE LIFE OF PABLO; KANYE WEST: Kanye, one of the most decorated, accoladed and hated rappers out there but dang he does make some good music. The Life of Pablo is one of the coolest experimental rap albums ever made. End of story. The album features a number of powerhouse features and a strange garbled production that works so well with the vain rhyming of West it’s scary. Say what you will about West but the album is perfect, perfect because of all of it’s imperfections. Yes, West is a self absorbed egomaniac, but The Life of Pablo is an absolute diamond in the rough. Cubs on Track to End 108 Year Old Drought Jason Upton Sports Editor

Coming off a 103 win season and a big series against the Giants, the Chicago Cubs are the hottest team in baseball. The Cubs are supported by their unbelievable pitching staff, including three Cy Young candidates in Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks, and Jake Arrieta. Their batting is impressive as well, Anthony Rizzo and Kris Bryant have had MVP caliber seasons, and Dexter Fowler, Jason Heyward, and Addison Russell provide plenty of runs. Unquestionably the best combination of hitting, pitching, and fielding in the league, the World Series title is the Cubs to lose. The Cleveland Indians have been a very consistent team. Their team hit a turning point amidst a 14 game winning streak where they earned much more recognition for the Kris Bryant hits one of his many home runs. Bryball club. Lonnie Chisenhall has had a breakout postseason, with two home runs through Game 2 of the ALCS. Mike Napoli has had an MVP caliber season, with 31 home runs and 101 RBI. Both clubs are great examples of how bad teams can come back to contenders within years. The Cubs just two years ago were the laughing stock of the MLB, but once they called up their big name prospects such as Kris Bryant, Jorge Soler, and Hector Rondon, they came back big time. The Indians used to finish conistently under .500, but came as a surprise

this year. Not one of the original contenders, the Indians have shocked the baseball world. This gives hope to seemingly hopeless teams such as the Rays, Phillies, or Braves.

This World Series will be one for the history books. The Cubs aren’t the only team on a long drought. The Indians haven’t won the World Series since 1948. The city of Cleveland will have a banner year if they win, which would follow up the Cleveland Cavaliers Finals victory ending another slump. Both sides have fans that are hungry for a cham pionship, so either way, at least a 50 year slump will be broken. The bottom line is that while the Cubs are the favorite to take home the World Series rings, the Cleveland Indians are more than able to upset them. Their Game 1 win proved that, as they won in dominant style. Their ace, Kluber pitched six shutout innings, and an under the radar hero in Roberto Perez hit two home runs to seal a shutout of the Cubs. The Cubs will undoubtedly rebound from their miserable Game 1 loss, but Cleveland has a lot of momentum going forward.

The Hellgate boys earned a first round bye, finishing the regular season with an 8-1-2 record, and the Western AA title. The Hellgate boys won it for the fifth straight year. The Hellgate girls defeated Big Sky in a shootout to advance to the state tourney. They finished with a respectable 5-5-2 record. Bozeman figures to be Hellgate’s biggest threat heading into the tournament for the both the boys and girls. The boys are aiming for their second straight Montana AA soccer championship.

Tim Tebow: Is He Worth the Hype?

A Heisman earning college football career came and went along with what looked to be a promising professional football career and has now turned into a venture into professional baseball for Tim Tebow. Tim Tebow was arguably the biggest name in college football from 2006 to 2009 as he fulfilled the role of all star quarterback for the Florida Gators. His college career entered him right into a promising position in the NFL that inevitably ended with his status as a college all star. Tebow was was initially drafted by the Denver Broncos, twenty fifth place in the first round of the 2010 season draft. Tebow then played for the Broncos for two years before getting traded to the New York Jets for the 2012 1 season which proved to be his final season in the NFL. This lead into a slump period in terms of his professional sporting career. Tebow started back into professional sports in the Summer of 2016 when he was signed by the Scottsdale Scorpions. The Scorpions are part of the Major League Baseball’s Fall league. This new chapter and attempt at professional sports may turn out to be a strikeout for the once-great football player. Tebow has been struggling to keep up with the rest of the team in hits, starting off the season hitless. If this does prove to be a flop for Tebow, for some it will be an ‘I told you so’ moment and for others just another athlete fading into obscurity as age and irrelevance creeps up on them. But Tim Tebow truly has been an influential athlete throughout his entire career, having written three books, won the Heisman trophy, and played professional football as well as professional baseball. One could say that he has really rounded the bases. Athletes playing more than one professional sport are few and far between as most people will never even make it to the collegiate level. Nick Hanser Sports Editor

Tim Tebow making an opportunity for himself to do two professional sports and be one of college football’s greatest players is more of an anomaly than anything. In college Tebow played for the Florida University Gators and lead them to a victory in the 2009 BCS National Championship. But the question still stands. Is Tim Tebow worth all the hype he’s been getting? Though there is no true concrete answer to the question. One could say that he is not and that this venture into professional baseball is just a ploy for him to hold onto his fame

from college and stay relevant in the world of sports. It is not uncommon for people who were once in the lime light to take one final stab at relevancy before they fade into obscurity. Tebow did not need to do this though as he will always be remembered as one of college football’s greatest players of all time and will be in the hall of fame for the sport. Having done that, played on two teams in the NFL and have written three books Tebow was in no need

of publicity. The assertion can still be made though that Tebow had spent one too many years out of the public eye and felt the need to come back onto the forefront of sports. It was certainly a bold move for Tebow to go from football to baseball as the sports have very little in common other than a viewing audience. The vast difference between the worlds of baseball and football can be seen as even more evidence that Tebow did this whole thing as a way to come back into some fame. This being the more cynical and critical way to look at one final stab at relevancy for what most would call a ‘washed-up’ athlete. Another way this could be looked at is that Tebow was looking, not for fame, but rather for a way to just get back into professional sports. Having a promising football career that fizzled out very quickly, Tebow could be looking for another means through which he could play a sport professionally again and give it his all. After playing in the NFL and being dropped by his last team, Tebow had little to no chance of reentering professional football and may have looked at baseball as a sport that he already knew hows to play and a sport that his past fame and prowess could help carry him into. It has turned out that baseball is just that for Tebow and that his past prowess as an athlete helped him to come into baseball so welcomingly. This being the more uplifting and sincere way to look at Tebow’s final attempt at a professional sports career. Nonetheless Tim Tebow’s career in professional baseball has only just begun and he has yet to really prove himself good or bad. Certainly being hitless thusfar has put a dreary spin on a young career. But only time will tell whether the Scottsdale Scorpions made a good decision taking a chance on the ex-football player, who had been in a slump period for a few years, or whether he will flop and be cast back into the obscurity of the sports world.

Winter is Coming: La Nina Hitting Northwest Grant Porter Features Editor

This winter is setting up to be quite a good one if you are a skier or snowboarder. This is all because of a little weather event called a La Nina. A La Nina means good snow for the Northwest and bad snow for the East. Now let’s dive into the scientific aspect of a La Nina; La Nina occurs when the Eastern-Pacific tropical waters around Peru are cooler than usual, resulting in heavy precipitation in the Northwest. Already this October, we have far surpassed the average rainfall, doing so in less than two weeks. On average one inch of rain equates to about 13 inches of snow, but that can be changed depending on how heavy the snow is or how light. When the snow is incredibly light one inch of rain can equate to up to 50 inches of snow! Hope you have some snow tires. If it is a warm winter however you can expect far less snowfall because the heavier the snow is, the less of it there will be. All the precipitation will be a welcome break from the snow-thin winters of the last couple years. The most excited for this weather event will no doubt be the snowsport enthusiasts in the Northwest, as we can expect above average snowfall for certain with this weather pattern. La Nina will also help our rivers during the spring thaw because of all

the excess snowpack that the higher alpine regions will have put on. This will mainly affect our upper reach streams because they will be absolutely roaring come the spring thaw. It’s time to take out your fat powder skis and start thinking about heading up to the bowl. The cross country skiing should also be optimal, if you are looking for a workout as the above average snowfall will make it tough. The high country in many parts of the state is already experiencing an above average amount of snowfall in areas such as Lolo Peak, Stuart Peak and the entire Bitterroot area in general. Hikers should get their last climbs of the season in because soon enough unless you want to be snowshoeing and using an ice axe there will be far to much snow in traditional hiking areas. The peaks are already getting a pretty decent coat so this may be the last chance for an ascent because the higher elevation is already bringing squalls of snow and has been doing so since earlier this month. The gates at our local Montana Snowbowl are closed for the time being but you can expect them to be opening up soon enough now that they are already experiencing snow even at their lower elevation. Now is also the optimal time to swoop up a season pass to The Bowl if you feel so inclined because if you buy before the season starts it

will be much cheaper than buying it directly when the season starts. As the days get steadily cooler we can start to expect a replacement of the torrential rainfall we have been getting in Missoula with heavy snow, really heavy snow. Yes, this winter is shaping up to be one for the ages and that is all due to La Nina, so get out in it because who knows when we’ll have another winter such as the one that’s coming.
