The Consequences of the ABCs Words by Jenna Elsetouhy Image by Darcy Campbell Throughout school, it is difficult to remember the true purpose behind it all. While studying for an AP exam, or sitting in class rigorously writing notes down, or losing absurd amounts of sleep, it’s easy to say, “I hate school.” It is

a phrase that gets thrown around so frequently and, unfortunately, without hesitation. We are slowly forgetting that school is a place where we should be learning, and not crying about grades. So why has going to school turned into such a burden for teenagers?

When the transition was made from having no homework to homework every night, and from a test every two weeks to 4 tests in a day, that’s where the education system got a little lost. Students everywhere are constantly under extreme pressure, and while this may seem like such a first-world problem, it’s hard not to feel

4 6 5 1 2 3

like you are going to explode at any given moment. Anxietyridden, depression-filled teens around the world are committing suicide, because of a nerve-wrecking presentation or a number on a piece of paper. School has begun to feel like a mission of keeping everything in: tears, nerves, and anger. It is a MAJOR privilege to be able to attend school (even though it should be a right, but that’s a whole other article), because of the fact that certain groups of people still would not even dare think about getting a formal education. But the school system isn’t drawing the line between student welfare and the school’s business agenda. Memorisation and cramming have become extremely prominent in schools

due to the school system’s desire to earn profit by gaining new students through the advertising of their high exam results. But this short-term memorisation isn’t taken with the students after graduation, let alone even able to be recalled a week after the test. The American College Health Association-National College Health Assessment report, released in 2016, showed that roughly 1 out of every 10 college students have been diagnosed and/or treated for anxiety. While this anxiety is certainly present during high school, it becomes stronger in college, as not only do students have to keep up with their academics, but they also have to make plans for the future that depend on their actions now.

And their actions now depend on that one multiple-choice question that they cannot quite remember, or the essay prompt that they understand completely, but the grading teacher fails to understand their logic. Stressing about school and grades is fine, to an extent, and while it should not be the norm, that is unfortunately what it has grown into. Only we can change our own schooling, and we must. Just remember: always do your best, and that if your best doesn’t fit the perfect mould that the education system sets, remember that there are so many more beautiful things to learn in the world, that you can’t learn sitting at a desk in a classroom.

Editor’s Letter: Turnbull’s Hypocrisy Dearest Readers,

University is just one of these forms, and is an incredible tool in the bettering of an individual and a society, as it furthers the abilities of students through participation in a highly specialised course. Despite university’s obvious necessity, it is slowly being made incredibly inaccessible.

threshold for student loans in both their sizes and time they can be repaid in. But the horrendous (and infuriating) irony and hypocrisy in this proposal is that Turnbull himself benefited from free university. University was made free in Australia when Gough Whitlam was the Prime Minister. He saw the value of education and made it accessible to anyone, whether they had money or not. Malcolm Turnbull benefitted from this and did not have to pay a single cent for the degrees that he earned and the consequent future that arose out of it. His current position as prime minister is a direct result of his free education.

Malcolm Turnbull, the Australian Prime Minister, has proposed an increase in university fees and a reduced

How dare the Australian government, who advocates the importance of education and excludes people trying to enter

I am not a big believer that the Australian education system is the best thing for all, but I am adamant that everyone deserves the opportunity to choose an education if they desire it. Education has many forms and each of them is crucial to the building of our world.

our country on the basis that they do not have an education, show such hypocrisy in their choice to make university exclusive to the rich? Does Australia want to make our society into an ancient one, where only the people who have money have education? University fees are already overwhelmingly high as they are, but with this 7.5% increase and decreased time to pay back the student loan, they skyrocket. European countries such as Sweden and Finland offer free university, so why can’t Australia offer it as well? We had it once in the past and it gave a whole generation of people a terrific amount of opportunities that they deserved. Forcing students to pay fees for their right to education, especially fees as high as Australia’s, is cruel, as

4 6 5 1 2 3

they are made to pay them in a time where they are trying establish their future and family. The cruelty in this is so infuriating and is made worse by the fact that the proposal does not just affect students, it affects the providers of education. Turnbull proposed cuts to the government funding of Australian universities, further destabilising Australia’s academic environment. This will encourage universities to charge more in order to make up for their loss of funding, hiking up the fees once again.

How is this fair? How is Malcolm Turnbull so blindly ignorant to the needs of his country? Luckily, the Labor and Green parties have made it very clear that they will oppose the proposal. But is their refusal enough to prevent the proposal? If it is not, I encourage students anywhere to take their learning into their own hands and to never back down. Your education and knowledge is your choice, and a government has no right to take that from you via monetary pressures. If you cannot afford an education as it is now, I urge

you to work out what you want to know and learn about, and take yourself down to the library and hire some books. Scour the internet. Enrol yourself in a free course (learn a language via Duolingo.) Do anything you can to choose your education, because ever so slowly, the government is taking away that choice. Kindest Regards, Darcy Campbell Editor-in-Chief of The Restless Times Newspaper.

Sexist Rules Didn’t Stop This Saudi Woman Words by Maddie Bryann In Saudi Arabia women are not allowed to drive. This law was the government’s response to Saudi women’s demands for social reforms: instead of progressing, they placed an official driving ban against women. Not only are women in Saudi society not allowed to drive

themselves, but it is also taboo for them to use public transportation or travel alone. In essentiality, the women are told they are dependent on a man to travel, since they are only citizens who can hold a driver’s license. However, one Saudi woman has pushed back against this societal confine in the best way possible, by going against the

rules in order to save a man’s life by driving him to safety. Ashwaq al-Shamri is a twenty year old girl that was on a bus with her friends travelling from their university to their homes. During the commute, their driver became ill and said he felt dizzy. The girls helped him to a store to get some water. The girls then felt that he

4 6 5 1 2 3

needed to be taken to the hospital, but since it was miles away, they decided to take him to his family so they could care for him. Ashwaq got behind the wheel, despite the driving ban, and began to drive him home. With Ashwaq’s help, the man got home safe and sound, and his family could take him to the hospital. Ashwaq going against the rules proves that the women of Saudi Arabia are capable of driving themselves. Actions like these help raise awareness about the necessity of changing the rules. Although this rule is not set to

change soon, maybe Ashwaq’s actions will spark something in Saudi Arabia. Maybe more good things will happen, more rights will be opened up, and sooner or later, they will have equality on all levels, from the highway to the workplace. Women are now being allowed to work, study, and seek health care without a man’s consent, so this is one step in the right direction. Let’s remember, our driver’s licenses are something we should really think of as a privilege, because not everyone

has the same opportunities to have the right to drive, or even own a car to drive. Let’s use our voices, embrace our rights, and create new ones for others! Amazon Giving Back to the Homeless of Seattle Words by Jemimah Reeve Photography by Aleyna Sahin A few years ago, following the city’s sudden growth, Seattle was faced with a housing crisis, forcing hundreds of people onto the streets with nowhere left to go.

supportive community, and a place to find hope. And this month, the world-wide online retail store has announced its plans for a new Seattle headquarters, and alongside it, a brand-new home for Mary’s Place.

The problem was so severe that in 2015, the city was forced to declare a state of emergency, and even now, there are an estimated 10,000 homeless people living in Seattle. But Amazon, the same Amazon that gave us Kindles and next day delivery when we forgot to buy birthday presents, is doing the best it can to fix this problem.

Over 47,000 square feet of the new Amazon property will be home to a first-of-its kind base for the charity that will be able to provide shelter for over 200 homeless women and children every night. After work begins this autumn, it will be only two short years before the charity will have the facilities to do even more of this incredible work.

Mary’s Place is a Seattle charity that helps homeless people specifically women, children, and family groups, to reclaim their lives, and stay safe, healthy, and nourished. They offer not only practical help and emergency relief, but a strong,

But this isn’t the first thing Amazon has done to help Mary’s Place – last year, in April, it found itself with a vacant building on the property, a former hotel. The workers behind Amazon decided to upgrade and redecorate it, all

with the purpose of allowing the local charity it’s use – for the last year, it has been a temporary home to the charity, and all of the people that benefit from it. Employees for Amazon are also frequent volunteers and visitors to the shelter, many of them giving in as many ways as they can to the homeless families they live alongside – from donating toys and clothes to cooking meals, and even organizing events for the families. The support that this company has given to those suffering, right on their doorstep, has

4 5 2 3 1

already been incredible, and this generous new donation to the wonderful work of Mary’s Place is astonishing. In a world where business and retail are increasingly impersonal and distant, hearing of this generous act is heart-warming. Sources: http://www.marysplaceseattle.o rg/blog/amazon-marys-place-

Brooklyn  Boasts  New  Hijab  Salon   Words by Miah Ke-leigh For most Muslim women, especially those who choose to wear a hijab, something as simple as getting a haircut can be a difficult at times. Due to many wanting to keep their hair covered, especially in the presence of men who aren’t family, finding a place to feel comfortable and relaxed enough to remove the hijab to get a haircut is not always easy. This is where Huda Quhshi decided to step in as she created a hijabfriendly salon called Le’Jamalik. The salon’s name translates to ‘for your beauty’ in Arabic and is located in Brooklyn, New York. Quhshi’s aim was to create the salon in order to make it more accessible for women of the Islamic faith to feel at ease when being pampered. Quhshi shares her own experiences prior to starting her salon, by stating that when she used to get her hair done in a salon, she’d feel comfortable until a man walked in and then she had to quickly cover her hair with a towel and walk to the back room in order not to be seen. This, amongst other reasons such as never

completely feeling at ease when pampering herself and even having services denied to her because of her faith , is why Quhshi came up with the concept of Le’Jamalik as she realized she is probably not the only woman feeling like this. Quhshi makes it clear that although the salon is known for being hijab-friendly and will have many Muslim clients, it is a woman only salon and females of all religions are welcome. Men are not allowed to visit the salon due to Quhshi wanting to protect the modesty of her clients as well as wanting everyone to be able to relax without them stressing about who might see them. The salon has been open since the 29th of January 2017 and has been gaining lots of recognition. Not only is this because it is the first womenonly salon in New York, but because it also welcomes clients coming in for basic services such as manicures and pedicures while also catering to Muslim women by offering halal nail services and henna tattoo applications. The store even sells wedding dresses and offers seminars to beauty

enthusiasts, professionals or any woman who want to enhance their skills. Furthermore, the entrance of the salon spotlights a revolving door with desk and service areas positioned away from the windows, so that customers are ensured privacy. Men are allowed in the waiting area but not behind the double doors which lead to the service area where women can relax and be pampered in ease. With decorated with ornate white framed mirrors and blush coloured chairs, it is obvious that Quhshi is proud of her salon when she says, “I’m definitely happy to empower other women and make other women feel like I’ve opened doors for them.” As a hijabi of Yemeni descent, she hopes she can be an inspiration to other women and little girls who may have to overcome bias in order to achieve their goals.

Denmark’s Wolves Words by Julia Jelinek Photography from nywolf.org In 1813, wolves were found in Denmark but haven't been seen for nearly 200 years. However scientist officially confirmed that a wolf pack is living in the wilds of Denmark. DNA evidence suggests that there is one female out of the pack of four. Scientists are hoping for the wolves to start breeding as of this spring and re-establish themselves in the Denmark region within the next five years. Denmark’s wolf pack is settled in an area of farmed heathland and small pine plantations, accompanied by plenty of roe deer which will most likely help the wolves accomplish a stable and confident comeback. The emergence of the wolves has caused fear for farmers with reports of loss sheep due to the wolves. However, the government has planned a wolf management plan to assist farmers with the new wildlife. Although the last wolf was spotted in 1813, it is most likely that the species was extinct since 1750. The wolves went instinct mainly due to the persecution (hunting) by humans, worried that their livestock was being eaten. The only thing that is worrying scientists is whether the people will accept the wolves. The management of the population can be done easily if there is proper measures taken. This includes the government taking charge in enforcing the rights and protection of these animals. It is important to not only allow the wolves to live freely, but

also for the people to coexist with them and learn to share the landscape. The International Wolf Centre is an organization which strives to educate the world on wolves, their relationship to earth, and the human roles in their future. They envision a world with thriving populations of wolves in all parts of their native range, as well as a global system with wildlife support. Their goal is to provide learning opportunities to create a human respectful attitude towards wolves. In human lives we need to accept that we coexist with wolves and all animals on earth. You can support the International Wolf centre by joining their pack and donating time, supplies or money to help bring the facts about wolves to people all

around the world. The return of the wolves is very positive to nature conservation and show’s us how nature can take care of itself if only we let it. An Introduction to Politics Words by Jemimah Reeve Photography by Aleyna Sahin The world of politics is a complicated one, and one that takes years of study and immersion to fully understand – even then, I have my doubts that anyone really knows what’s going on. As you will be aware, politics is a subject that draws out opinions and views like no other, and the chances of ever finding another person with all the same values as you are minute. I am obviously not going to tell you who to support, what to believe, or what views to have – the one thing that needs to be said is that if you do not wish equality for everyone, and an end to discrimination for any reason, then The Restless Times does not agree with you. But aside from supporting basic equality and fair treatment, politics is personal, and it is up to the individual to choose who to support, to do research, and make an informed decision on who to support or vote for, based on what they think would be best for the most people. As a young person, I understand how easy it often is to just believe what your parents believe - to just blindly accept that ‘parent knows best’, or that your guardian must have the ‘correct’ view. And yet, as easy as that would make things, there truly is no ‘correct’ view. No political party has ever been able to gain full and

overwhelming support from the entire public, and they never will. Everyone sees different things, and comes to different conclusions about what would be best for their country and themselves. Your parents, as knowledgeable as they may be, are not an endless supply of truth and wisdom, and it’s important to recognise that. Of course, I’m not saying that you cannot agree with your parents, or the other adults in your life. Relatively often, people come to conclusions on their own, and those conclusions are the same ones their parents came to. But it is important to come to these conclusions independently – ‘I don’t eat Smarties because Mummy said they’re bad for me’ should be

left in the playground, just as ‘I’m not voting for them because my dad said their immigration policies are really bad’ should be. We’re all going to have different opinions of what makes a policy bad – don’t trust that your parent or guardian’s will be the same as yours. Sometimes, a parent may even put pressure on you to vote a certain way. They may actively try to influence you, to stop you from believing anything different to them. Fortunately, there are few parents that I have come across who do this, but they are certainly out there. And it isn’t just parents, either. Other family members, or friends, or teachers, or whoever – they

4 6 5

shouldn’t be trying to influence you, trying to make you feel bad for not believing or voting a certain way. Trying to persuade you of their opinion is one thing, but if someone tries to shame you into voting the way they want, tries to make you feel bad if you don’t, then it’s a problem. I know of people who themselves are apathetic, or only have a slight inclination towards or away from a certain party, and are persuaded by friends or family into voting their way, instead of the persons own. Opinions are important, both to have, and to support. If you find yourself not knowing who to support in a political race, it’s probably because you haven’t done enough research.

party manifesto’s, for videos of rallies, for things the candidates and their representatives themselves have said. Avoiding biased media is difficult, but, I believe, important if you want to be able to have a fully informed opinion. Or, at least bear in mind that information you’re receiving will be biased. But truly, as difficult and tedious as it seems, reading up on policies, going into the nitty gritty of what a political party wants, and how they intend to do things is important. Don’t just vote for a certain because they’re a specific wing, because of what you’ve heard, but vote because you’re informed, and you know the details behind what you’re supporting.

Don’t give away your support, and if you have one, your vote, because you can’t be bothered to establish your own. I can guarantee that if you look into it enough, you will find something about all the options that either turns you towards, or away from them. If you haven’t, then keep looking. Being able to form, have, and voice your opinion is certainly a right, but it is also something not to taken for granted, even if you aren’t one of the people who’s had to fight for it. Make the most of the fact that you live somewhere that you get a say – which I’m assuming you do, if you’re reading this – and make sure your voice is heard. It is so important to have an opinion – and to act upon it.

Once you’ve found yourself with a political party or candidate you support and back, it’s important to hold to it – not stubbornly, or so that you cannot be persuaded by reason, but have conviction that what you believe is indeed the best option. It’s so easy to share opinions nowadays, and it seems like the only ones people talk about are all the same. If you don’t necessarily agree with what certain celebrities and public figures think, if your opinion is not the same as the most popular one of the day, then it’s easy to feel alone in it, and to feel like you’re wrong.

Flipping that around, it’s important to be tolerant of other opinions that people have, that you may come across. Politics is passionate – it makes people feel strongly and often aggressively, and this can lead to arguments. Debating politics is good, there is absolutely nothing wrong with trying to persuade people of your opinion, trying to argue your own case. But it needs to remain healthy and respectful – getting angry with people because their opinions differ to yours is not okay, unless of course they are acting upon hateful beliefs. If someone thinks women shouldn’t be allowed to vote, then I will join you in getting incredibly angry with them, but beyond oppression, people are as much entitled to their opinions as you are. Tolerance, as with everything, is key in political debates.

But there is nothing wrong with thinking against the tide and common beliefs being accepted – provided you don’t hurt anybody, or wish to. There is a common trend amongst those figures that young people look to and are exposed to by the media to all think a certain thing, and it’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that you must be incorrect if you do not naturally think the same. It’s

Similarly, although considerably more challenging, is keeping an open mind. There is no point in those political debates if people aren’t even opening their mind to considering other options. When you’re having a calm and sensible discussion about politics, putting across your point of view and trying to persuade a friend of your opinion, you would hope that

When it comes to forming the opinion, of your own accord, it is tough to know where to start. But, as with most things nowadays, the best place to turn is the internet – not for articles written about political parties or candidates, because they are bound to be biased, but for

important to remember that you’re entirely entitled to your opinion, whatever that may be, regardless of its popularity. Again, as long as you do not want to discriminate against a group of people over arbitrary factors, you can think whatever you please, and you have a right to be proud of that. Don’t feel that you have to change your support because of public opinion.

7 8 1 2 3

they would at least be respectful and humble enough to listen to what you have to say, to consider it, and instead of just discarding it without a second thought, to come to their own conclusion, based on the fact alone and not associations with it. Do the same – while you may be certain of your opinion now, be aware of the fact that there are others out there, valid in their own way, and worth listening to and respecting. Respect really is key – respect yourself, and your right to an

opinion, and a vote. Respect others, and their rights to an opinion, even if it is different to yours. And respect politics itself, and those involved in it. The people in power (for the most part) are doing what they believe is best for the public, and regardless of if you also think that is best, their conviction and action deserves respect all the same. Except, of course, we cannot be expected to respect those who respect none.

people. Perfectionism. It is the reason you lack confidence in your work and why you tend to let it sit on your desk for days before you’re “ready-enough” to finish it. You have the tendency to compare yourself to others. How would she write it? This is wrong! It does not make sense. This word is too simple.

The Hardships a Writer Must Face Words by Nicole Constance Photography by Lin Marshall Writers hold power in their hands and in every word they write. They can change beliefs, lifestyles, and mindsets. But with that privilege comes a price- the struggles and hardships they face. There’s the fear of being critiqued. Your words reflect

who you are as a person and sometimes it is so hard to separate yourself from your work. When others say bad things about it, you tend to take it personally and believe they say it about you because then again, those pieces of grouped letters and sentences are you. In writing, you share the deepest parts of yourself and put it in the hands of so many

Sometimes the words just won’t come out no matter how badly you want and need them to! You have tried everything to motivate yourself and summon all the writing spirits but still, you’re staring blankly on a piece of paper rotating the pen in your hands. The writer’s block, as they call it, is the next worst enemy. But then again, we start over. We are gifted with all of these emotions so that we turn into magic. Still, we carry on, because writing is the air that we breathe and while it may hurt too much, it is also where we find our healing. When the words are down on paper, we feel lighter. There is only so much that writers cannot conquer.

Zero Waste Lifestyle Words by Julia Jelinek Photography by Lin Marshall The average American generates 4.3 pounds of trash per day. That’s approximately 1600 pounds of trash a year. Landfills, which are places where rubbish is disposed of in man-made holes in the Earth, are extremely toxic for our environment. Landfills produce an extensive amount of greenhouse gases and often do not decompose of materials the correct way, which can lead to the release of high levels of methane. Unnatural chemicals get into the soil and can end up going into the ground water and oceans. A lot of your garbage doesn’t even end up in landfills, but instead it lands on the sides of roads or becomes dumped in the ocean. Plastic is also dangerous, especially to our ocean and marine life. Our ocean has become a plastic-filled toxic oasis. Much of our marine life is getting caught in plastic waste, or mistaking this pollution for food. This is exacerbated by the extreme accumulation of garbage on the beach. It has become so bad that for every microplankton in the ocean, there are 36 microscopic pieces of plastic to match. What many are slowly figuring out is that if we start taking simple steps, we can minimize and reduce the intense amount of waste we create. There is a movement beginning in the depths of humanity and it is called the Zero Waste Lifestyle. The Zero Waste Lifestyle in definition is living without waste. But this lifestyle is

overwhelmingly difficult, so the movement tries to focus on more than that. It is a spiritual, mental and non-disposable way of being. The Zero Waste Lifestyle is a call to action in order to end the waste mentality that human society is consumed by. As humans we are actually borrowing the resources on the earth, yet we are doing more harm than good, and we need to start putting the Earth into a restorative cycle. This lifestyle does just that as it focuses on sustainability. Sustainability is the ability to maintain an ecological balance and avoid the depletion of our natural resources. The best way to pursue this is to aim our lives towards a long-term goal. What kind of earth are we leaving to future generations? What kind of example are we setting as a disposable and wasteful society? We need to shift our mindset and decide what are we going to preserve and what how are we going to pass this through to future generations. Our society has become a disposable one. What you have isn’t enough. This ideology is brought up from the lack of exposure in our society. Media, television and advertisements show us the only way to be happy is to have more. We want the new phone and the new house and the new clothes. If you don’t have the “new” then you're not considered worthy. The Zero Waste Lifestyle is easy when you access the correct resources and leave your ego behind you. Instead put your mind toward the earth, a.k.a your home. It is also important to remove yourself

from the materialistic society and spend time in nature. This quality time you can have with earth can teach you that happiness is not disposable. Happiness is the feeling of laughing with the ones you love, drinking coffee on a rainy morning, or participating in your favourite hobby. The Zero Waste Lifestyle might not suit your life as you are likely under the influence of guardians, but you are still able to take those small steps to reducing our environmental footprint. Some small ways to reduce your daily waste is to recycle. That means actually reading the bottle or can and seeing which bin it belongs in. Recycling can also be done with your clothing by donating them to charities, thrift stores, or to your friends. Another important step is paying attention to your water waste (yes, that is a thing). Take shorter showers or skip going to an indoor pool and visit a lake/beach. As quoted by Cinderella, “Just because it’s what’s done, doesn't mean it’s what should be done”.

The World Through Miah’s Eyes

Words and Photography by Miah Ke-leigh There is something magical about traveling overseas. It starts with the excitement of packing; there are so many questions that come with each item you place into your suitcase. What will the weather be like? What kind of adventures will I get up to? Should I bring this pair of jeans, just in case? The excitement continues the minute you walk into the airport. It is chaotic especially if you’re just starting to explore the world. No one knows you, and you don’t know your surroundings - it’s a temporary fresh start, a brand new adventure.

I started traveling when I was nine years old. The first country I ever visited was Singapore. People weren’t kidding when they said it’s a fine country you literally get fined for everything. There are a lot of rules that were difficult to wrap my head around, however now that I’m older, it is really common sense and all about respect for one another and the community in which people live. Singapore was great to explore and have some of the most amazing live plays close to the beach where you get to watch people perform a story about Singapore’s history. I have also visited Hong Kong. It was less exciting for me personally, but I was amazed at

the night markets. Thailand was excellent for shopping. My family and I stayed in a hotel in Phuket. Days were spent lazing by the pool, exploring flea markets and getting familiar with local culture. Street food was such a wonderful treat from fresh fruit to roasted insects, everything was on the menu. The first countries I visited in Europe were France, Italy, Germany and Croatia. France was incredible, but not for the reasons why people spoke about it, such as the Eiffel Tower. The shopping centres, beautiful accents, and delicious bakeries were my favourite part about visiting France. The Eiffel

4 6 5

Tower was less enjoyable; I did not anticipate in all of the long queues. Something that was incredibly special was how the Eiffel Tower lights up in the evenings. The Louvre Museum is also a must see, if you have the time. It’s usually crowded so it is best to go in the morning.

Netherlands. Austria, similar to Germany, is wonderful in the winter. There are Christmas markets too but the atmosphere is very different. Germany is more lively, while Austria is more cosy. I stayed in Salzburg whilst I was there. The houses are faerie-like and the scenery is breathtaking.

Italy is stunning in summer. It gets incredibly hot, but there’s lots to do and lots to take photographs of. It’s one of my favourite places to visit and not just for the pasta. There are water taxis, amazing art galleries, street artists outside of the colosseum, gladiators to take pictures with, and market stalls where you can purchase cheap souvenirs. The leaning tower of Pisa is excellent to visit in summer too. Be sure to bring a picnic blanket and a few snacks and enjoy the afternoon watching other tourists pretend to hold up the tower.

Switzerland was crowded in the wintertime. My family and I visited Jungfroujoch, which is the highest point in Europe. Here people can take cable cars up the mountains, go on ski trips or snowboard. My sister and I went into the caves and explored; there’s a museum and even the Lindt chocolate factory where you can see so many varieties of chocolate! In 2012, I visited the Netherlands - little did I know I would move there a year later. At the time, my family and I stayed in Amsterdam, which I personally think is overrated. If you want to explore the Netherlands, I suggest going to cities like Rotterdam and Utrecht. Amsterdam is popular for, dare I say it, weed and sex, but if you really want to have a good time, go away from the tourist attractions and explore the places locals go.

Belgium was fun to explore. I've visited it a few times (Antwerp, Bruges, Brussels, Ghent, Ypres) and though it's not one of my favourite countries, it's one that I've made the most memories in. I enjoy visiting Germany during the holiday season. There’s usually lots of Christmas markets and believe me when I say that it is incredibly festive. Munich is lovely to go to in the springtime and explore places that the locals go. Croatia is lovely in the summertime too; there’s many stores to explore, ice cream shops with loads of different flavours and of course, the gorgeous beaches to laze on. The earlier you get there, the better it to soak up the rays of sun summer has to offer. Other European countries I have visited include Austria, Switzerland and the

I have not travelled to many places in Africa. I’ve obviously been to South Africa (where I am from) and I highly recommend Cape Town in December, which is when it is summer. There’s so much to do; swimming at the beautiful beaches, exploring table mountain, visiting the V&A Waterfront, dinner at Sea Point, high teas at the Twelve Apostles Hotel in Camps Bay. Another place I have visited in Africa is Namibia, which is beautiful if you want a more stereotypical African experience; desert with cold

nights, warm mornings, stunning sunrises, and you can even meet African tribes/clans while trekking through the country. In Central America I have visited Costa Rica, which is hands down my favourite travel experience. I really got familiar with the culture and that is something I’ll always treasure. The people were warm, friendly, and so welcoming. Originally, it was a cultural exchange/volunteer program that my school organized, in hopes of international students saving and raising awareness for the Leatherback Sea Turtles, but it became an experience of a lifetime. It was so exciting! I celebrated my 18th birthday there, in the middle of a rainforest, my group and I were evacuated from a beach because of high tide and I still stay in touch with some of the locals I met there. Meals consisted of rice and black beans, we mostly stayed in rainforests and cabins close to the beach, though we did spend a day in the city of our tour-guide. Traveling has opened my eyes and mind to so many things. By traveling, you become connected to the earth, the people that inhabit it, and the diversity of language and cultures that are created. You will truly get a fresh perspective of the world. It doesn’t even need to be a new country; simply exploring a new city or taking a road trip is enough. Trust me, you’ll fall in love with the world. Yes, there’s a lot of negativity and yes, we face global issues that urgently need to be addressed - but these issues are shoved into our faces so often that we forget there is some good in the world. Luckily, we don’t have to look too far to find it.

A Universe of Colours Words by Arianna Posega Antique beige mixed with caramel // You know how your heart feels warm when you see a lovely coffee shop at the end of the street, while your eyes can barely stay open after a long sleepless night of writing essays that were due the next (or should we say same) morning? All the brighter shades of brown remind me of coffee shops for some reason. It may be because of the colour of the foam on my usual cappuccino order, or the lightbrown wooden table I usually sit at or simply because coffee beans are brown and my brain associates through colors... Purple & baby blue // Imagine having a palette and mixing purple with white first and then adding some baby blue. Imagine mixing these three colors together and you'll get the sky after a long rainy day. A clear sky painted with this color, no clouds, only some fog that covers up the details in the distance. A mix of purple, white, and baby blue reminds me of a rainy sky, when the road is still full of puddles, people are walking around with umbrellas in their hands, unsure if it'll start raining again and drops are falling down the leaves and down the window you're peeking at this scenario out of. Shades of coffee // Even though I already previously mentioned a brown shade, here's yet another one. I've always loved neutral shades, which some people compare to monochrome colours, but I always see neutral like a beautiful combination of

darker shades with brighter ones, getting the best of both. Your skin was an angelic shade of brown. I admiringly looked at the different shades of us, while our fingers enlaced playfully. Your arms covered in black ink, that used to be my canvas a long time ago. Along with your mind and soul, I fell in love with your coffee coloured skin, because it always made me feel secure, calm and joyful. Golden hour tones // You can be driving in your car, headed home or to a meeting, sitting at your desk doing homework or walking on a busy street in the city, but the golden rays emanated by the sun slowly leaving the sky always, somehow, find a way to reach you. Whether you'll see the golden shadow of the flower bouquet you have on your desk on your white walls, or you'll feel the warmth of the golden rays on your skin or you'll see it in the eyes of the person you love, because their brown eyes are going to have golden pieces in them. Wherever you'll see the golden shade, it will always, somehow, reach you. Sunset // How can I even try to describe this colour? My camera roll is full of pictures of sunsets. Yet if I had to compare two sunsets with each other, I could not find the same color mixtures in any. Each sunset is unique, each sunset has its own different colors mixed that create a layer above us as a reminder of how tiny we are compare to the universe. And what is more astounding than the light blue

slowly turning into a baby pink with pieces of bright red, that fade into a pale orange with splashes of purple? What can possibly be more magnificent than sitting with a view above your whole city while watching the sky turn into a work of art, turning colours and becoming a masterpiece?

Time and Money Management Words by Emma Rodgers For teens, if there are any two things that need managing, they are time and money. We usually find ourselves in a whirlwind with school and money, whether it be that we are trying to turn in an essay written at the last minute or scrambling in our wallets trying to scrounge up enough money to buy that Arizona tea at the local gas station. In these moments, all we want is a bit more time, or a bit more money to make things easier. With this being said, when one looks at time and money management, there are many things we can do to keep both time and money managed. If you are looking for simple ways to spare yourself of the stress of being late, or are looking for ways to keep money in the bank, look no further. Develop a routine Developing a routine helps with both money and time management. This routine can be as simple or complex as you want it to be. For time management purposes, setting a routine for homework tends to be the most beneficial for me. I set my timer for 4:00 on the dot, and when that time comes I begin my homework. I work for an hour or so, and take a ‘wellness’ break, which consists of a quick Instagram and Facebook check. Once I finish the homework due for the next day, I start to take a look at any long term projects I have coming up, and I start on these items. When it comes to projects, I like to skype friends or have friends over so I am entertained while working on getting things done for the future.

In terms of money management, having a routine can help with impulse buying. During the school week, try to limit the amount of times you go out for lunch or your number of Starbucks runs. If you go to cafe’s to study, try to implement a routine where you only buy coffee every other time you go. When you go in groups of friends, as long as some people buy something, you are free to stay in the cafes for as long as you want! Priority When you look at everything you must do, it is easy to get overwhelmed. With whatever situation you are in, you must prioritize what gets done first. If you feel overloaded with homework, sometimes it is best to just do the homework that is absolutely necessary, and leave the rest for later. We all need a break sometimes, and overworking yourself is not good in the long run. With money the same priority principle applies. If you know you are going out on the weekend, skip the after school food run or midday coffee craving. Always look ahead to see if what you want currently is worth more than what you will want later. Use your resources With money management, one way to make it easier is to have more money to work with. To have more money, you must save! One way to save money simply is to use your resources. Instead of going to a bookstore, hit up your local library. When you go out to eat, if you have leftovers, save them! When online shopping, ALWAYS

check for coupons before checkout. Whenever you get change, throw it into a piggy bank, don’t let the coins get lost in your wallet where they will never accumulate into any big bills. Set Goals Setting goals sets concrete dates as to when you want to accomplish goals. For time management this comes in handy, so you can have small dates to have things completed before the due date. With money, setting goals helps so you can save up for rewards later. Setting goals like saving up $15 every month can reap larger benefits when the end of the year comes. Reaching this goal can be simple when you give yourself rules such as: •

Taking all the coins you are given and putting them in a piggy bank Saving all the $1 bills you receive in a piggy bank If you pay for someone and they pay you back, instead of spending that money right away, put in in your piggy bank

Time and money management seem like large tasks, but when broken down into smaller tasks, both can be achievable, and very rewarding. Over time, making small changes to manage your time and money will seem like second nature.

Five Thought Processes Words and Photography by Matenia Altikatis Essay 1: Human Body/Body Image What is it about the body in its rawest form that terrifies society? Think about the first time you felt uncomfortable in your own skin. For whatever reason, you felt your safety or security was compromised. How ridiculous is this? How ridiculous is it that our society is so dominated by sexualizing the human body? When was the last time you said you loved yourself? When was the last time you appreciated your body? Your body is not a single possession. It is your entire being. Not only does society tell us to cover up more, but it sells us products, pills, and powders to make us thinner, tanner; “more beautiful”. Because people are no longer people, we are a market in which society feeds off our insecurity. We’re inadvertently made to feel inadequate in the eyes of the industry. After all, isn’t that what you see in magazines? Ways to “better” your appearance? And for what? So you can begin a romantic relationship? So you can prove something to someone? It is so unfortunate that in 2017, society still places more value on a person’s aesthetics rather than their passions or experiences or knowledge. It is so hard to develop meaningful relationships with substance and purpose, as opposed to a friendship or relationship based on looks and popularity. Your body is wonderful just the

way it is, as long as YOU are happy with it, because when you’re comfortable with yourself, no one can tell you otherwise. Don’t allow a world of Photoshop convince you that you are anything less than incredible. Essay 2: The importance of getting away for a little bit

find yourself in your art. I promise you will learn more than anything you can in school. More about yourself, more about people around you, more about the world in general. That’s life behind the lens, or the notebook, or the canvas. Essay 4: To Be a Woman

Learning to get away is one of the most important lessons of all. No, I don’t mean you should run away from your problems or responsibilities; I simply mean that you should know when you’ve reached a limit. Know when you need some time to yourself to draw, write, think, or whatever it is you need to do. Go for a drive with the windows down and your favorite playlist turned up. Head to the beach, either alone or with a friend. Bring a disposable camera, some fruit, some music and your towels. Be sure to put your phone down and take advantage of the day. At the very least, turn off your phone and read a book, or put headphones in and go for a walk. Escape social media and the world for a little bit each day. Learn to relax and take care of yourself. You’ll be happy you did.

In a society that allows men to dictate how we dress, what we do with our bodies, how we act and so many other things, I have a fair bit to say about being a woman. There is nothing more empowering than the divine feminine. Your body can create and sustain life. Your body is a garden full of sunflowers and roses and is meant to be taken care of. Your body is strong. Remember to stand tall and own it. Don’t allow anyone to make you feel inferior. Don’t forget to lift your fellow sisters up; when women tear down other women the result is absolutely horrendous. Women are incredible. Remember that.

Essay 3: Behind the Lens

I know how guilty I’m sure all of us are of forgetting to recycle or littering or uber-ing somewhere when we could walk or bike or take the subway (very guilty of that one). Every time you eat a hamburger, the amount of water that went towards that burger is something you forget about entirely. While promoting things like vegetarianism, veganism, getting rid of your car, and never forgetting to

I live life behind my camera lens. Spending my time capturing people, nature, and whatever catches my eye. Being passionate about something is the only way to truly feel alive. Allow the ocean of your passions to completely engulf you. Take everything in and don’t give up. Every photo is not perfect, but it is real and that’s all that matters. You will

Essay 5: Our Earth, because we only have one. This is dedicated to the earth, mother nature, our planet.

4 1 2 3

recycle are important and possible, for some people, it is unrealistic (for whatever reason). This is simply here as a reminder to be mindful and protect our earth. You may be thinking, “Well I’m one person, what difference can I make?” The answer is a huge one and that starts with getting educated. Documentaries such as Cowspiracy, Gasland, Fracknation, Chasing Coral, and Food INC. are all great places to start. This is not my way of asking you to make lifealtering decisions; I’m simply stating that awareness is important. We should be able to see and understand what is going on in the world around us. After all, there is no such thing as Planet B.

What I See Are Robots Words by Nicole Constante what i see are robots simultaneously walking in the same kind of clothing heading straight down the road eyes empty in the cold what can i say it is another long day wake up and refuel i am not being seen as a real human being but rather a machine left right the clock ticks and tocks see through their skin see through their teeth they aren’t just fast passing faces that fill public buses with the same memorized routine inked on their arms the living dead, is that what they’re called?

they’re sucked out of souls calloused palms hidden by fists closed until alarms go off, they sink to the ground and they wake up to the same reality not knowing what choice means neither opportunity growing nails and lungs that breathe the same air as you what makes us why are we measured when we come from the same origin and share but one destination what does it all mean to you? what are you ready to sacrifice? what i see are robots dressed the same walks simultaneously i start wondering, is that what's becoming of me?

A Collection of Podcasts Words by Jenna Elsetouhy Scrolling through Instagram, clearing out of the app, and then reopening it… sounds familiar? This is a cycle many of us are guilty of getting stuck in the middle of, and you really do end up feeling bad when it seems like you have nothing to do besides binge watch Netflix or refresh Twitter… For the hundredth time. Here are some podcasts, that are great for moments where you’re in need of some inspiration, or just a little pick me up. The Messy Heads podcast Stemming from one of my favorite publications to date, this is a podcast with a few episodes where the editors, Emma and Cybelle, talk about topics ranging from spirituality and interviews to activisms such as #FREETHENIPPLE. These are what I picture myself listening to in a subway car, on a hot August day, wearing my beat up Vans. TED Talks - With a slogan “Ideas worth spreading”, these are video podcasts from different inspiring people. A little on the longer side, these are really great before you go to bed in my opinion. The words will help you to clear your head

and spark inspiration within you. Some of my favorites are “My daughter, Malala” by Ziauddin Yousafzai, “I’m Taking My Body Back” by Rupi Kaur, “What I learned from 100 days of rejection” by Jia Jiang and “Hi, I’m Scott” by Scott Mescudi, also known as Kid Cudi.TEDx Talks are also really awesome! Stella Rae podcasts - Stella has been one of my favorite youtubers for over a year now after having found her because of her veganism. In her podcasts, she talks about broad topics but they mostly all come back to spirituality and the way she lives her life. She is young, educated, and has manifested her entire life to how it is now and it puts you into a state of awe. The Rookie podcast - Rookie is a magazine for teens by teens,

and it’s something that has been around, with an open tab on my browser, for the past five years. Their podcasts were started not too long ago lead by Tavi Gevinson, founder and editorin-chief. Her bubbly energy and the fact that she has grown up with all of us provides a really cool factor into the podcast. With guests such as Lorde, Rowan Blanchard, Winona Ryder and more, it’s hard not to love. The Starving Artist podcast Ah, yes, finally! A podcast we can all relate to. The Starving Artist podcast talks about art & money, and how to take control of your life and still be able to somehow manage the two. Many of the episodes include interviews with young artists, who have made their craft into a living, and an exploration of their own ups and downs, to give the listeners hope.

Frances Cannon: Body Positivity in Art Words by Jessica Ciarczynski Artwork by Frances Cannon In this day and age, it is not uncommon to find an Instagram post, tweet, or tumblr image dedicated to women’s rights and female empowerment. One artist took this movement a step further and began creating artwork showcasing a woman’s body in a positive way. In her art, Frances Cannon sends a message that everyone is beautiful, that every body type is different- and that’s okay. She takes the insecurities that many people have and turns them into beautiful images to show everyone that they should not feel ashamed of their insecurities but rather embrace them. Everyone has parts of themselves that they view as flawed. Instead, these should be acknowledged and accepted. There is nothing embarrassing about the human form. Cannon’s work is real and raw, which is what makes it so relatable. Her goals include fighting against the standards placed on women, and recognizing that everyone is unique, making her style very prominent. Most of her pieces are black and white drawings featuring a nude woman, usually including body hair, different body shapes, etc. Along with each illustration, there is a positive message about self-love, acceptance and the importance of body positivity. Frances tells women to “Never put another woman down because of her body; loving other women’s bodies is an important step in loving your own!” Thanks to Frances, the world is a much brighter and more positive place.

Review of a Sunny Day Words by Caitlyn Hasenfratz A sunny day begins quietly. Secretively. Slowly. As though you don’t even know it’s coming until it’s impossible to ignore. A sunny day provides an unlimited multitude of opportunities, and an initial feeling of excitement and joy. What will happen today? Let’s find out. Within the first few hours of a sunny day, you are asleep. You’ve no idea who or what exists in these hours or how the sunny day manifests itself as it gradually appears. You awaken, and you’re thrust right into it. A sunny day engulfs you completely and immediately – but maybe not so when it first began. A sunny day often combines itself with a warm day, although the two aren’t mutually exclusive. A sunny day that is also a warm day lends itself to iced coffees and picnics and reading in the park or by the river. A sunny day that is also a cold day too leads to all of these things, but with several more layers worn, a frozen river with a sign that reads “no ice-

skating” that you choose to ignore, and a piping hot beverage in a warmly gloved hand. A sunny day that is also a rainy day may cause great confusion because you usually don’t expect grey rain clouds to be accompanied by sun, but sometimes they are. A sunny day that is also a rainy day may keep you from wanting to be outside, but the prospect of a potential rainbow resulting from this unexpected confusing meteorological situation of rain and sun existing simultaneously excites you to such a level you may as well be channeling Sam Sparks, the wonderful and underrated weather intern turned food-weather correspondent in Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. A sunny day also lends itself to temporary blindness as you squint and stumble; hand darting about a bag looking for the sunglasses you know you haven’t packed because you hate when sunglasses slide with sweat down your nose, and you know the darkness of the glasses causes you to experience another kind of

blindness anyway. A sunny day makes you happy you haven’t forgotten your sunscreen. When a sunny day ends, you question whether you’ve taken enough advantage of the chances it offered you for over twelve hours. A sunny day could be the most productive day of your life, pushing you to WANT to go out and run errands and get stuff done. Or, it could push you to go outside and take a nap and that’s it. Most of all, a sunny day gives every reason to believe it could possibly be the best day of your life (so far). Other days could do that too, but they aren’t as confident about it as the sunny day is. In the end, it seems that a sunny day exists in so many capacities that stretch beyond what we imagine and visualize in our heads. Could a side effect of a sunny day be sunburn? Sure. But the side effect is also a reminder of a lesson we’ve already learned – wear sunscreen EVERY day, people. A sunny day is a teacher. A sunny is a friend. And most of all, a sunny day is always, always welcome.

Harry Styles: Review of a Restless Soul Words by Maddie Bryann He’s a restless soul, a creator, an artist, an idol, an individual, an inspiring human being. This soul is appreciated by so many for his words, thoughts, actions against stereotypes, beautiful melodies, talents, and so much more. When I tell you the person I’m

talking about is Harry Styles you may laugh, because all you see him as is a teenage lead singer of a boyband. But, please get those thoughts out of your head. I want to discuss this incredible person as a creator and the restless soul he is, not his boyband past or popularity. The titles of “heartbreaker” or “boyband member” simply

don’t fit him. Instead, I believe that Harry fits the title of “restless” perfectly, never stopping and always creating. He is constantly breaking style rules and showing us it’s okay to be ourselves. He protests and stands for equality and creates art at the same time. He finds beauty in his and others art and

music, and inspires others. He is a voice for our youth. He advocates for teenagers by going against stereotypes and speaking up whenever his voice is needed. When asked about having a primarily young and female fanbase during an interview with Rolling Stone he stated, “Who's to say that young girls who like pop music – short for popular, right? – have worse musical taste than a 30-year-old hipster guy? That's not up to you to say. Music is something that's always changing. There's no goal posts. Young girls like the Beatles. You gonna tell me they're not serious? How can you say young girls don't get it? They're our future. Our future doctors, lawyers, mothers, presidents, they kind of keep the world going. Teenage-girl fans – they don't lie. If they like you, they're there. They don't act 'too cool.' They like you,

and they is sick.”

you.

Which

Harry Styles fits perfectly into our restless youth and we are grateful to have him. Recently, on May 12, 2017, Harry Styles released his debut self-titled album, and has since gotten so many great feedback and reviews. I think this album definitely shows off Harry’s talents as a creator and singer, and is a perfect representation of his style. Each song is unique, although they all have that similar style to them. His beautiful voice can sing slow, guitar strumming songs, and rock inspired songs. He can change in a few seconds, but it all fits him incredibly well. All of his songs are standouts, but some of my personal favorites are “Sweet Creature”, “From the Dining Table”, and “Carolina”. “Sweet Creature” has a beautiful sound to it, so

sweet, gentle, and melodic. His voice is so soothing and I fall in love every time I hear the song. With its beautiful melodies and prominent guitar strokes, “From the Dining Table” is such a unique song. “Carolina” reminds me of an older song, but with a new twist. Its catchy tune and lyrics, his deep voice, and just everything about it makes you want to dance. Overall, Harry Styles is a creator that is not always seen as who he really is. His music and his words need to be appreciated, and people need to start thinking of him as more than his past. He is a creative individual, inspired by rock and roll, a lover of life. A restless soul. Source: http://www.rollingstone.com/m usic/features/harry-stylesopens-up-about-famous-flingshonest-new-lp-w476928

Patience Words by Abby Strangward Photography by Caitlyn Hasenfratz I crave impulse. I crave the adrenaline of a quick decision, a life uprooted, possibilities stretching before you. Moving with the flow, packing light suitcases, journaling in foreign cafes. I crave the energy of a city you’ve never seen, of a day you’ve never come close to experiencing.

possibly do?

From every direction, I feel bombarded with people preaching no regrets and seize the day and take a chance. But what can I- a 15 year old halfway through high-school-

And I know, I know what you might say. I’ve heard it a thousand times. The habits I could change, the friends I could make, the new things I could try. But I cannot move to

Paris, or New York or Amsterdam. Forgetting logistics such as money and age – it’s illegal to even drop out of school. I can’t spend days contemplating a new creative project – school occupies my mind constantly.

4 6 5

I can’t wake up and write feverishly all day – school exists, school is there, school, school, school. Impulse is out of reach, in the form of both big life changes and small creative moments. I struggle every day to come to terms with the years that still stretch out in front of me. High school feels stifling. Youth feels both intoxicating and despairingly wasted. I preach restlessness and fiery actions, but I feel as if … every day is too quiet, too orderly, and I cannot escape. I don’t have the power to uproot my life right now – and it will be a long time until I do. How can I find solace in patience? How can I treat patience with the same fire and urgency I do impulse? In this generation, what has patience come to mean? We have grown up with instant

gratification. Social media is a drug – and it’s free, and it’s everywhere. We stare hungrily at phones awaiting notifications – likes, follows, texts. Scientific studies tell us our attention span is shortening. We can barely wait a week for the next episode of our favorite show. Where the entire world is obsessed with busyness – checklists, jobs, projects, the next thing, the newest thing, the best thing – patience is different. What is it to stand still as the crowd surges around you? A form of rebellion. Patience is the opposite of everything that is widely accepted. Can patience itself be a form of restlessness? We are here, and there are years in front of us, and it feels stifling and hopeless and we could distract ourselves

with busyness and projects and the next best thing or we could not. We could slow down. There is plenty here for me, in this little town by the beach, on the train-line to the city. Sand and salt and streetlights and rain and laughter and maccas and highways and libraries and thrift shops. My best friend dying of laughter in my bed, wandering around the beach in a dressing gown, pool-side days and sun-soaked Sunday’s reading at home. I don’t know. I crave impulse, I do. Sometimes everything feels like it’s falling in on me and I miss a world I’ve never seen like I might miss a lost friend. But I’m learning to turn patience into my form of rebellion. My form of restlessness.
