Institute of Transportation Engineers Northeastern District Annual Meeting Crowne Plaza Hotel May 23-25, 2012

WELCOME Please join us in Lake Placid, NY for the 2012 ITE Northeastern District Annual Meeting. The Local Arrangements Committee has put together an agenda full of technical sessions and entertaining activities that you won’t want to miss.

This year’s meeting offers

the opportunity to earn more than 10 Professional Development Hours (PDH) (pending approval) with topics on extreme traffic management, ITS, transportation planning, bicycles and more. Other activities include the popular 9-hole golf scramble, a bike tour along the beautiful Olympic Scenic Highway, a companion tour of the Olympic venues, and don’t forget the always exciting Traffic Bowl, this year hosted by Steve Gayle. Will the reigning champions from NY Upstate Section once again dominate, or will they be upset on their home turf? Complementing this agenda will be networking opportunities that take advantage of the Olympic Village including a get acquainted function and our annual awards dinner. In addition, we have invited the industry’s leading edge vendors to share their latest products for integration into our projects. We look forward to seeing you there,

Don and Mike If you have any questions, comments or need additional information, please contact the meeting co-chairs: Don Adams (518) 446-0396 [email protected]

Special Events Golf Outing Wednesday, May 23, 3:00 p.m. Tee Time Following Wednesday's technical sessions, come spend your afternoon with us enjoying a round of spring golf at the Lake Placid Club Mountain Course. In order to gain the full experience of beautiful Adirondack State Park, playing a round on its championship golf course on the fringe of its wilderness is a must! The Lake Placid Club Mountain Course is highly touted as one of the premier golf courses in the Adirondacks. The Lake Placid Club Mountain Course was laid out in 1910 by Alexander H. Findlay who immigrated to the U.S. from Scotland in the early 1880's and became one of the pioneers of golf in America. In 1931 the course was remodeled by Alister MacKenzie, designer of AUGUSTA NATIONAL - home of "The Masters". With smaller greens and more tree-lined fairways, this course begs for the straight shot. The engaging design takes full advantage of the scenic vistas and will appeal to players of all levels. It is quite simply the essence of "mountain golf". Access to the course is a short car ride from the Crowne Plaza Hotel - 88 Morningside Drive, Lake Placid, NY 12946-3344 The outing will be 9 holes of golf and the format will be a scramble competition and the opportunities to socialize with your peers on and off the course will be abundant! The cost of this event will be $40 which includes green fees, golf cart, beverages and snacks. All levels of golf experience are welcome and prizes will be awarded. If you are interested in playing, please fill out the golf outing portion on the registration form. If you have questions or would like more information on the outing, please contact Mark Sargent at [email protected] or 518446-0396. To learn more about the golf course, visit http://www.lakeplacidcp.com/golf_mountain.html

Companion Tour – Lake Placid Olympic Venue Tour Thursday Morning May 24th Howard Riley, will host the Lake Placid Olympic Venue Tour. Howard prepared the technical reports to the International Olympic Committee for the 1980 Olympic Winter games and was the director of the President’s staff of the Lake Placid Olympic Organizing Committee. Howard worked to get Lake Placid ready for the Olympics in 1980. Howard was the mayor of Saranac, and he is now currently a judge. He was a reporter that traveled to Switzerland in 1973 to cover the bid process for 1976 Olympics. Then he was put in charge of reporting status updates of Lake Placid to the IOC. During the Olympics he acted as the troubleshooter for everything that went wrong. He said he was running around constantly and didn’t really get to see any events, except one. The ONE, aka the USA vs USSR game. "Everyone was going crazy," he said. “And then we couldn’t get out, because there were 50,000 people outside the arena celebrating.” Cost of Tour: $20/person Tour begins at Crowne Plaza Hotel at 9:00 AM and lasts approximately three (3) hours.

Special Events Technical Bike Tour: NYS Route 86 Olympic Scenic Byway Wednesday May 23, 2012, 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM Pending PDH Approval Experience the magnificence of the Adirondacks on this beautiful 14 mi/ 23km bike tour, which will pass by the Olympic Ski Jumps and Whiteface Mountain Ski Resort along a segment of the Lake Placid Ironman Competition Bike Route before finishing at the Flume Falls, an amazing waterfall area of the West Branch Ausable River. While you tour, periodic stops will be made to discuss transportation issues found in this highly recreational corridor. Discussions will focus on the importance of proper parking area layout and access, trailhead and wayfinding signing, and the environmental considerations necessary to design facilities within the Adirondack Park. In addition, transportation issues related to Ironman training and competition within the corridor will be discussed. Contact Jeff Lebsack at [email protected] or (716) 854-1181 x244 for more information.
