Sample Responses to Comprehension Questions Set 2, Level J: From Mud Tortillas by Barbara M. Flores On the section of the assessment titled “Comprehension Questions Section” the child may respond to the questions in numerous ways. There are many acceptable responses to each question. The child’s response is acceptable as long as the response to this section of the assessment demonstrates that he or she understood the meaning of the text. As the child answers each question, be sure to record the response carefully, using extra paper if needed. Here are several examples of the wide variety of acceptable responses to each question on this part of the assessment: 1. Literal Question: What did the aunties do at the beginning of the story? • The aunties took care of the girls, because their parents worked. They also made tortillas.

2. Literal Question: What did Adriana use to make her tortillas? Adriana wanted to make tortillas just like the aunties, but she didn’t have the right stuff. So she used the following: • Dirt instead of flour. • The cat’s milk instead of water. • A piece of cardboard instead of a comal. (Students do not need to name the comal in telling about how she cooked the tortillas.)

3. Inferential Question: Why did Adriana and Teresita make tortillas the way they did? Any of the following: • Because they couldn’t get the real ingredients so they pretended. • So they could pretend to be like their aunties.

4. Inferential Question: Why do you think Adriana’s aunties ask Adriana to cook for her sister at the end of the story? • The aunties wanted to punish Adriana, so they made her make tortillas that were real. Teresita got to eat them, but Adriana didn’t get any.
