January, 2010 President’s Message Happy New Year Congratulations to the 2010 New Mexico National Board Certified Teachers and those NBCTs who have renewed their certificates this year! We have planned several events for all New Mexico NBCTs. Please join us on February 4, 2011 at the round house in Santa Fe, as we will all be honored by the NM legislature celebrating the achievement of our 92 new NBCTs, which now brings us close to 600 NBCT statewide. This event is sponsored by Representative Rhonda King. We will have selected NBCTs from 1995- to present on the floor, and invite all other NBCTs to attend and sit in the balcony. I’m also excited about our upcoming conference and celebration reception on Saturday, February 5th, 2011. The conference is from 8am to 2pm at the Marriott Courtyard in Albuquerque. You can go to www.nmnbctnetwork.org to download a registration form, or find one on page 9 of this newsletter. Every year participants thank us for renewing their passion for teaching as they spend the day engaged in networking with other NBCTs around the state. We in the network find advancing the work of national boards in New Mexico very rewarding. If I could retire, I would devote my time in working with teachers going

through national boards full time. Fifteen years ago I achieved and I still feel it is the best professional development experience in my 31 year career. Come celebrate with us the same evening from 6:30-8:30 as we award our new NBCTs and renewal NBCTs with a certificate and national and state national board pins. I hope you will join us and become a part of our community of teacher leaders in NM promoting national boards for the students of NM. Warm Regards, Evelyn Sanchez, NBCT President NMNBCT network

Resolve to Advocate for Yourself! The new year brings new opportunities to become involved in advocacy for NBCTs in New Mexico. The state and federal officials who were elected in November are now in office. This is a perfect opportunity to take a few minutes and introduce yourself to them. If you have not contacted your elected representatives yet, you really should. Budgets are very tight and cuts will be made. F you can put a name and face to the NBCT program for the officials, they are less likely to cut the support. Your five minute phone call or email could help save your NBCT Stipend or the funding for

a new candidate. Don’t be shy! Remember that these are public servants who want to make the best choices for New Mexico’s students. As a National Board Certified teacher, you are an expert in education. We want to let the decision makers know that they can come to us for advice on what really works best for students. Call or email one state representative today! Introduce yourself; say that you are a National Board Certified Teacher in their district. Ask them to join us February 4 at the State Capital as we celebrate having more than 500 NBCTs in New Mexico! Let them know that new NBCTs will be honored in the House and in the Senate on that day. Ask them if they would like more information about the most effective way to raise student achievement. Numerous research projects have shown that students of NBCTs out perform all other students. When they support NBCTs in New Mexico, they are investing in the best! JOIN US AT THE CAPITAL IN SANTA FE on FEBRUARY 4th!! We need to distribute information packets to all of the senators and representatives. Join us for and help get the packets into the hands of the decision makers. We will meet in the Lobby of the Roundhouse at 9 AM to distribute the information packets to NBCTs. If you have a connection to a specific legislator, make an

appointment to meet with them on the 4th. Members of the Board will be available to go with you and help to lead the discussion if you wish. Remember that it only takes a few contacts to get a legislator to become involved in an issue. We need to make certain that the contacts about education inform them about the vital nature of continuing to support New Mexico’s NBCTs.

Information Sessions If you are currently interested in holding, or have already planned to hold an Informational Session for your school, district, area, or region I would like to post it on our Network website (www.nmnbctnetwork.org) and on www.nbctlink.org so that anyone who is interested could attend. Please email me ([email protected]) the day, date, and time of your Informational Session and I will post that information on both websites. Informational flyers, registration papers, and Power Points will be available on www.nbctlink.org within the next several weeks. Information sessions are very important to spreading the word to teachers all across the state of New Mexico. There are still many teachers, administrators, superintendents, and educational board members who do not understand the impact the national board process can have on their students learning. Information 2

Sessions can be held in an hour, and can share information covering support, and incentives that can be different depending on your area. There is no required training to hold an information session, but we do advise the use of NBPTS materials that can be ordered at www.nbpts.org and the Power Points that have been adapted to focus on New Mexico’s incentives and available support systems. hosting a Candidate Work Retreat Feb. 18-20, 2011, at the Ojo Caliente Springs Resort. Candidates are encouraged to attend this event, work with trained CSPs on entries and questions, and take some personal time to think, write, and relax. The Ojo Caliente Springs Resort is a beautiful place about two hours north of Albuquerque which has lots of public hot springs, peaceful work areas, and good food. The program will start on Friday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. with a candidate meeting at the resort. Candidates and CSPs will talk about entries and issues with National Board work. On Saturday, Feb. 19, there will time all day for candidates to schedule individual consultations and discuss questions about entries. CSPs will be available throughout the day to work with candidates in small groups. In addition, candidates may work on their entries, write, and even connect through the resort’s wireless network. To finish the event, there will be a meeting at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 20, for participants to wrap up questions and work. Cost for the event is $25, which covers the program costs to the network. It does NOT cover any of the candidate’s food, lodging, or extra costs for treatments. To register for the retreat, individuals must email Pat Graff at [email protected] no later than Monday, Feb. 14, 2011.

Candidate Support Provider Training Mark your calendars! CSP training has been approved by the board to be held June 3-4, 2011. The training will begin at 8:00am and run until 5:00pm each day with a 1 hour break for lunch. The CSP training will cost $50.00 to cover the cost of materials. You will receive a manual and CD-ROM with ideas, support materials, and activities to complete with candidates. More information (including how to register) will follow in the newsletter, at www.nbctlink.org, and at www.nmnbctnetwork.org

Candidate Work Retreat Set for Feb. 18-20 To support candidate work and provide an opportunity for candidate learning in a unique and less stressful environment, the NM Network of NBCTs will be 3

One feature of this retreat will be the opportunity to send ONE entry in advance to have a CSP read it and provide feedback on that entry. Candidates wishing this service must send the entry as an attachment via email to [email protected] no later than Wednesday, Feb. 16. If candidates wish to have more than one entry read, there is an additional fee of $25 per entry and those must also be sent by the Feb. 16 deadline. No full readings will be done onsite. Does this sound like something you as a candidate would like to do? The retreat flyer is in this newsletter (page 6) and posted on the state network’s website.

Saturday, April 30, 9 a.m.-12 noon at La Cueva High School, ABQ Registration forms for these classes will be available starting in January on the network’s website and in this newsletter (page 7). Cost is $35 per candidate. For questions, please contact Pat Graff at [email protected]. 

With 92 new NBCTs in New Mexico from the class of 2010, the state has now surpassed its goal of 500 NBCTs! The network will be planning celebrations for this landmark number in the next few months. Congratulations to all our new NBCTs!!!
