General Description: The Graduate Assistant for Residential Learning and Curriculum (GARLC) supports the administration of Living Learning Communities, development and implementation of Residential Curriculum, and the marketing of these programs in the residence halls at Georgia Southern University. The GARLC works to create environments which are conducive to the academic and personal growth of residence hall students. The GARLC works collaboratively with Residence Education staff, faculty and staff within the academic colleges, and partners in Student Affairs and Enrollment Management. The GARLC may serve as an organization advisor and committee member within University Housing. The GARLC reports to the Associate Director of Residence Education. Job Specifications/Qualifications: • A desire to work in supporting a formal curriculum within University Housing. • A desire to work in supporting the academic and social needs of residence hall students primarily through living learning community and theme living communities. • Demonstrated skills in the following areas are highly desirable: leadership, group dynamics, flexibility, professionalism, problem-solving, taking initiative on ambiguous projects, effective communication skills, and programming in a residence hall setting. • An ability to work with diverse populations. • Prior residence hall/student services experiences strongly preferred but not required. • In order to qualify for a graduate assistantship, be enrolled as a full time student at Georgia Southern University for fall and spring semester and maintain a 3.0 GPA. • The position is considered the GARLC’s primary, non-academic activity and the GARLC may not accept other employment at the university. The GARLC may not have significant responsibility in an extracurricular activity. Outside involvements should be discussed with the supervisor at the beginning of each semester to assess appropriateness. • Ability to physically lift a minimum of 25 pounds. • Must successfully complete a background investigation. Remuneration: The GARLC appointment is 10 months (August to May). Salary for the position is $7,750/year that is paid on a monthly basis. • Graduate Assistants (who are unconditionally accepted into graduate school) receive a tuition waiver of the standard in-state and out-of-state tuition but must pay a reduced matriculation fee of $25 per semester along with all assessed university fees. Some programs are approved to charge a premium tuition rate that is not covered by the standard tuition waiver. Graduate Assistants are responsible for paying all University Fees and the Technology Fee each semester. • This position is classified as a graduate assistantship and standard employee benefits are not provided. • The GARLC will report to campus for training 2-3 weeks in advance of the beginning of the assistantships formal start date. You will receive additional pay (determined by the length of time required for training). • This position does not provide housing. You may choose to live on campus at your own expense. Duties and Responsibilities: The GARLC is administratively responsible to, and supervised by, the Associate Director of Residence Education. The GARLC maintains a level of confidentiality, professionalism, and equality at all times. The GARLC completes 20-25 hours a week through regular office hours, weekly check-ins with their direct supervisor, and some nighttime or weekend requirements as the GARLC’s class schedule allows. Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Living Learning Communities (LLCs) Support the Associate Director of Residence Education with all aspects of the management of current LLCs and the planning and implementation of new and current LLCs. • Work primarily with 2 LLCs: College of Engineering and Information Technology LLC and the Lead & Serve LLC sponsored by the Office of Leadership & Community Engagement. • Assist the Advisory Boards of assigned LLCs with participant selection, programming logistics, communication of events, tracking of student requirements, and facilitation of events. • Support LLC marketing needs (print, web, and other media). • Create monthly reports of LLC events to be shared with academic partners, directors, and VPs associated with their respective LLCs. • Assist Resident Directors in supporting Theme Living Communities as needed. Residential Curriculum • Identify areas within the Residential Curriculum that need more development and create resources and training to improve those areas. • Write lesson plans and facilitation guides that align with the Residence Education Learning Outcomes. • Create and maintain a database of lesson plans, facilitation guides, and assessment data. • Develop and maintain a review process for evaluating lesson plans and updating those that do not meet departmental standards. • Research best practices for residential curriculum development and implementation. • Create monthly reports of Residential Curriculum events and data to be shared with Residence Education and University Housing staff. Miscellaneous • Attend staff meetings and one-on-one supervision and planning meetings with supervisor as scheduled. • Serve on departmental committees as needed. • Assist with 3 scheduled University Open Houses each year and prospective student tours as needed. • Assist University Housing with staff recruitment, interviewing, and training as needed. • Attend workshops and training sessions as needed or required. • Maintain a neat, organized, and clean work area. • Perform other duties as assigned. 2016 – 2017 Application Process • • •

Current staff members have the opportunity to interview for University Housing positions in February 2016. Graduate Assistant Interview Day will take place in March 2016. Preference will be given to candidates with any of the below qualifications: o Previous experience writing and assessing curriculum. o Previous experience with event planning and communication to event stakeholders. o Enrolled in the Higher Education Master’s or Ph.D. program and/or any graduate program in the College of Education.
