Jewish Cultural Quarter Amsterdam Beautiful synagogues, striking buildings, impressive monuments and special sculptures color the streetscape of the old Jewish quarter in Amsterdam. In the middle of this neighborhood, in less than a square kilometer, the Jewish Cultural Quarter is located here.

Four cultural institutions together give a unique view of the Jewish life then and now: Jewish Historical Museum www.jhm.nl/english JHM Children’s Museum www.jhmkindermuseum.nl Portuguese Synagogue www.portuguesesynagogue.nl Hollandsche Schouwburg/Holocaust Memorial www.hollandscheschouwburg.nl/en

JEWISH HISTORICAL MUSEUM The Jewish Historical Museum is a modern museum focused on Judaism that is located in four monumental synagogues near the Waterlooplein, in the heart of the old Jewish quarter. In three fixed settings the history and culture of the Jews in the Netherlands become visible here. With large paintings, small drawings, utensils, photographs, film and modern 3D presentations, this museum can justifiably be called a multimedia museum that interests both young and old. In addition the Jewish Historical Museum contains a Children’s Museum, and there are always one or two temporary exhibitions.

JHM CHILDREN’S MUSEUM The Jewish Hollander family lives in the JHM Children’s Museum. You are heartily welcome at their home. The Hollander family cares for the Jewish tradition, each family member in its own way, sometimes seriously, sometimes with a wink. And you can do all sorts of things there. Braiding bread in the kitchen, learning Hebrew in the study or making music together in the music room. The friend of the family, Max de Matze, shows the way to everyone and makes every visit into a party!

PORTUGUESE SYNAGOGUE Directly across the Jewish Historical Museum the magnificent Portuguese Synagogue from 1675 is hidden as an immense square building. In Amsterdam synagogues were allowed to be visible in the seventeenth century, but the entrance should not attract the attention. Therefore there are several annexes around the enormous house of prayer that hide the doors from view. The synagogue remains to be a somewhat mysterious building to many visitors. Once inside the synagogue they are rewarded by the impressive beauty of a synagogue that is still being used and of which the seventeenth century interior is fully intact. Since 2011 the complex contains several treasure rooms with many special ceremonial objects. In the Portuguese Synagogue you can also visit Ets Haim, the oldest functioning Jewish library in the world (founded in 1616). In 2003, UNESCO inscribed Ets Haim on the Memory of the World Register.

HOLLANDSCHE SCHOUWBURG/HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL The Hollandsche Schouwburg (the Dutch theatre) is located within a stone's throw from the Jewish Historical Museum. In this original theatre the Jews were gathered together during the Second World War in order to be subsequently deported to concentration camps. Thousands of people were awaiting their unknown destiny there. Some of them stayed for several hours, others for weeks. In remembrance of these people, a monument and a memorial room have been set up in the theatre. At the first floor you can visit a permanent exhibition on the persecution of the Jews between 1940 and 1945.
