A: Flora contains the actual account of habitat distribution and systematic listing of plants of a given area. 3. Define metabolism, what is the difference between anabolism and catabolism? A: The sum total of all chemical reactions occurring in the body of a living organism is called metabolism. Anabolism - constructive process complex molecules formed from the simple molecules 6CO2 + 12H2O ---> C6 H12 O6+ 6O2+ 6H2O (energy is utilised) catabolism - destructive process complex molecules are broken down in to simple molecules C6H12 O6+ 6O2 --> 6CO2 + 6H2O + 686 K.cal (energy is released) 4. What is the largest botanical garden in the world? A: RBG (Royal Botanical Garden at kew london) is largest in the world. NBRI (National Botanical Research Institute) Lucknow. Indian Botanical Gardens, Howrah. 5. Define the terms couplet and lead in taxonomic keys? A: Key is a taxonomic aid used for identification of plants and animals. Keys are based on the contrasting characters generally in a pair called couplet. Ex: leaves ovate vs leaves elliptic contrasts leaf shapes. leaves ovate vs leaves opposite should not be used as it contrasts leaf shape. Each statement in the key is called lead. leaves ovate one statement, leaves elliptical another statement. one statement acceptance, one reject. 6. What is meant by manuals and monographs? A: Manuals - It is small book specially designed for ready reference of plants. Monographs - contain information on any one taxon. 7. What is systematics? A: systematics is a latin word (systema systematic arrangement of organisms). systematics coined by linmaeus. The study of different kinds of organisms their diversities and also the relationship among them. 8. Why are living organisms classified? A: In order to make the study of organisms easy. They are classified in to groups by taking different criteria in to consideration. 9. What is the different between the growth in living organisms and growth in non living objects? The permanent and irreversible increase in the size of living organisms is called growth. living organisms- growth in living organism is from inside by cell division. non living objects - growth is by accumulation of material on the surface. What is the nature of cell-walls in diatoms? The cell walls are embeded with silica and
1 MARKS QUESTIONS thus the walls are indestructible. 2. How are viroids different from viruses? A: Viroids - The infections agents with nucleic acid (RNA) only are called viroids. protein coat is absent. Ex: Potato spindle tuber virus (PSTV). Viruses - The infections agents with both nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) and protein coat are called viruses. Ex: Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV). 3. What do the terms ‘algal blooms’ and red fides? signify? A: Algal blooms: The vigorous growth of cyanobacterial members on stagnant polluted water are called algal blooms. Algal blooms make the pond green. Ex: cyano bacteria Red tide: Red dinoflagellates like Gonyaulux undergo rapid multiplication that makes the sea appear red. Hence it is called Red tides. These may release toxins in to the water. They may kill the fishes in the sea. 4. what is the principle underlying the use of cyano bacteria in agricultural fields for crop improvement? A: Nitrogen fixation which increase the fertility of the soil. Ex: Nostac Anabaena 5. Give the main criteria used for classification by whittaker? A: Cell structure thallus organisation mode of nutrition and reproduction and phylogentic relationships.

name with two components is called binomial nomenclature. According to this system each scientific name has two components the generic name and specific name. This system was given by carolous linnaeus. Ex: scientific name of Mango is written as Mangifera indica. Mangifera (genus) indica (specific epithet) Some of the universal rules of nomenclature: 1. Biological names are generally in latin, and written in italics. 2. The first word represents the genus, second word specific. 3. Both the words when hand written are seperately underlined. Ex: Mangifera indica. 4. The first word should starts with capital letter (Mangifera), second word should starts with a small letter (indica). 5. The name of the author should be at the end of scientific name in abbreviated form. Ex: Mangifera indica linn. 2. Give the salient features and importance of chrysophytes ? A: Chrysophytes includes diatoms and golden Algae. The cell wall is composed of two overlapping shells hence the name given diatoms. Outer epitheca, inner hypotheca which fit together as soap box. The cell wall is embedded with silica. Diatoms reproduce asexually by binary fission, sexually by gamets.

cell wall deposits in their habitat and forms diatomaceous earth. Which is used in polishing filtration of oils and syrups. Diatoms are divided in to two types based on their structural symmetry centrals, pennales. Give a brief account of dinoflagellates ? Dino - two flagella - flagella Dinoflagellates are mostly marine and photosythetic. The cell wall has stiff cellulosic plates on the outer surface. They have two plates one is arrange longitudinally, another one transversely arranged b/w the wall plates. The flagella show spinning movement. So these pro lists are called whirling whips. The nucleus has condensed chromosome without histone proteins. This is called mesokaryon Red dinoflagellates like Gonyaulax unde rgo rapid multiplication and make the sea appear red, and so it is also known as red tides in mediterranian sea. Noctiluca show Bioluminescene. (make the sea surface glow in the dark) Gonyaulax toxins produced may... kill fishes.
