Aging Matters . . .

I always jump at the chance to share how dedicated and generous the people associated with NWDSS are and continue to be in meeting the ongoing and increasing needs of our center and the older adults we serve. In January, I asked for your support for the printing and distribution of our newsletter. Costs had risen and we wanted to offer everyone a choice about how they received the newsletter. To date, 55 people responded with a generous contribution to the Newsletter fund, for a total of $1,173 to off-set some of the $3,200 needed for this purpose. Then in May, I asked for your support again for the “ More than a Meal Fund” due to the rising costs and increased need for our home delivered meal program. Again, your response was truly generous, as 45 people contributed $ $1,328 to date toward the $2,900 additional funding needed. Finally, in June, I sent surveys to 63 people that use our Supportive Home Chore service for in-home assistance with light housekeeping, meal preparation, laundry, shopping and in-home respite for caregivers. Forty-four people returned their survey and had really wonderful things to say about this service and those we employ to do this work. Of the surveys returned, 100% indicated they were very satisfied with the service provided and 94% indicated the service helped them a Great Deal to remain in their own homes. Additionally, 98% thought the service was very affordable and a great value when compared to other service providers and their respective charges. Most important were the comments about our staff, such as, “My worker is very nice and willing to help me with many things”, “My worker is a wonderful, energetic lady that is very helpful and sees what needs to be done, she keeps me going”, “Since I had eye surgery, she has been a blessing to me”, “She does things I could not do without considerable pain”, “My peace of comfort is increased by her calm behavior when I have seizures”, and, “We enjoy the visits and we don’t feel so trapped in our own home.” These only represent a small portion of the wonderful comments shared about our staff and our services. I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your confidence and trust in our programs, services and staff. We deeply appreciate all that you do in helping us to provide the very best services and activities possible for those we serve—Angela

Support and Services . . . Do Not Resuscitate Bracelets— What You Need to Know As you may or may not know, the State of Wisconsin provides guidelines for the use of Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) bracelets as a way for individuals to communicate their wishes regarding end-of-life care. Wearing a DNR bracelet in the community informs Emergency Medical System (EMS) personnel of your wishes regarding CPR in the event you collapse and have no pulse. Recently it was discovered that there are only two bracelets that are authorized by the state. One is the standardized plastic bracelet that has the patient’s identification and physician signature on it and the other is a metal bracelet, which also has this information and can be ordered from the MediAlert Foundation. There are multiple vendors of medical alert bracelets. However, Wisconsin endorses only the MedicAlert DNR bracelet as the state approved DNR bracelet. Bracelets from other companies are not endorsed by the state. What could this mean for you? If you have a DNR bracelet from another company and you are alone when the EMS team arrives on the scene they are directed by the state to begin CPR. A DNR bracelet requires a physician order and when ordering a metal bracelet a copy of the order must be sent in to the company before it is created. A record is kept on file for EMS to access as needed to verify identification and physician’s order. You may contact the Medic Alert Foundation at 1-800-432-5378 or on the web at www.medicalert.org. Nutrition and Wellness

Tips for Summer Health Foremost is the need for adequate water throughout the day. No, not coffee, iced tea, colas, sodas or alcoholic beverages. Those beverages are dehydrating! Secondly, make sure you eat 3 balanced meals a day to keep your energy level high. Cold meals are more desirable during hot weather. Keeping the stove and oven off helps to keep the room temperature down too. Breakfast can be a high protein, cold cereal (choose one with 10 grams per cup or higher) with milk or a non-dairy drink like soymilk, rice milk or almond milk. Add a couple of teaspoons of walnuts and some berries. Or you can eat yogurt or cottage cheese with fruit and nuts. Or boil some eggs and keep them in the refrigerator. Lunch and dinner could be a salad with your favorite protein on top. Serve a lean protein (you can buy precooked from the deli) with vegetables. Fruit is very cooling during the heat. But don’t substitute fruit for all the other nutrients your body needs. Use fresh fruit as a dessert with your balanced meals. What you want to avoid on hot days are warming carbohydrates like bread, rice, pasta, potatoes, root vegetables, rich desserts, cookies, cake, pie and sugar. Eating these foods will make you very hot and sluggish. Eat light meals of cooling foods during hot days to stay cooler and healthier. Cooling foods include: strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, raspberries, cantaloupe, watermelon, yellow peaches, apricots, oranges, green leafy vegetables, poultry, fish and seafood. Disclaimer—If you have a disease or are on medications, follow your doctor’s recommendation about foods and exercise relevant to your disease, medications and condition. Stay out of the sun during the heat of the day. If you must garden, do so early in the cool of the morning. Wear polarized sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat to protect the health of your eyes and skin. Keep you electrolyte levels high if you exercise and remember to drink water!

What’s in Season ? We will be going to several Farmer’s Markets this season. On our way back from the Riverview Dine-out in Spring Green on July 18th we will stop at Hecks and Pecks. A trip to the Waunakee Farmer’s Market will be on July 25th! In July, the following is in season: peas, new potatoes, green beans, greens, spinach, summer squash, raspberries, cucumbers, sweet corn, tomatoes, herbs, beets, broccoli and onions. In August, we will be going to the Middleton Farmer’s Market in Greenway Station and Hecks and Pecks. All of the produce from July remains in season except peas. In August the following are also in season: peppers, apples, melons, eggplant and cauliflower. In September, we will be going to the Apple Orchard and to Hecks and Pecks. In September, the following are in season: winter squash, turnips, rutabaga, potatoes, parsnip, cranberries, and cabbage. Stay healthy by remembering that at least half of your plate should be fruits and vegetables at every meal.

“Last Leg” Walking Club If you like to walk but want to do it with a fun group, join NWDSS’s “Last Leg” Walking Club. We take our time and walk from the Center to the Luckenbooth Café (sit a spell) and then walk back every Thursday morning at 10:00 AM, weather permitting.
