Melanie was one of several second graders who volunteered to help tidy up the church after the school Mass. Her mother asked her why she decided to help clean the church, but never found time to clean her room. “God needed a favor,” she said, “so I did it. Then when I need a favor, God will help me.” Her faith in God was straightforward and simple; He was just another friend with whom she shared secrets and favors. It’s easy to substitute theology for faith and complex debate for simple relationship. Like many of the best things in life, we understand best with the heart, not the mind. To explain God, is it easier to say that in the perfection of His being, free from all sin and darkness, God, as the omniscient and omnipotent Being, loves me completely and without fail, as I am, since he makes me in his image and likeness? Or is it better to say, God loves me like a grandparent who spoils me rotten? If you are not sure, trade favors with God today. You’ll not only be surprised by what He gives you, you’ll also be surprised by what you can give Him.

July 9 ~ Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Believing as St. Paul says, “You are in the Spirit” gives us the impetus to speak to others of the importance of Christ’s presence in our lives. Being disciples of Christ and doing the work of evangelization takes time and energy, so we take comfort in the words Jesus speaks in today’s gospel, “Come to me all you who labor…and I will give you rest.” Once refreshed and renewed by Christ we need to resume our task of making disciples!
