F ROM THE PASTOR A huge word of gratitude goes out to the Ladies' Sodality and Men's Group, in particular to Mary Anne and Dino Cuscuna, for transforming what was advertised as a simple "priest appreciation day" into a wonderful acknowledgement of my 10th Anniversary of Priestly Ordination. To those who volunteered in any way and to those who donated all those items too diverse to mention, but too special not to notice: Thank You!! Last Sunday was an interesting day to mark milestones. Ten years as a priest and six years as your pastor--my first "term" completed and a second one beginning. Though not the greatest level of experience, it is an accomplishment that marks a transition away from being "new," which carries with it somehow a forward looking focus rather than one that sits in the past. Another transition occurred last week, too. I drove down to Otis Air National Guard Base for the first time to begin my work there as the only priest-chaplain in the Massachusetts Air National Guard (not Army Guard and not the Air Force Reserve, of which I was previously a member). My hope is that this will allow me to be a better chaplain to our military members while, also, more effectively balancing my pastor and chaplain duties. By way of explanation, being a chaplain means that I am in uniform as I serve as a priest to Catholics in the Guard while always being available to provide spiritual care and advice to anyone in uniform regardless of their faith. I do wear vestments when I say Mass, but NO, I do not get to fly....those days are a lot further back in the rear view mirror than my entrance into the priesthood!
