P RES ID EN T’ S M ES S A G E This will be my last President’s message and I wanted to recount the year ending with one of the greatest moments in my FDA history. Thank you for allowing me to have this ultimate honor of being your President. We have had so many positive things happen this last 12 months; it is exciting to replay them in my mind. It started with a hugely successful National Meeting put on by Dave Lunt in Sunriver Oregon, proceeded on to The Alaskan Cruise which was certainly one of those “Bucket List” types of trips, then on to Albuquerque for the Board Meeting amongst the largest balloon gathering on the planet. We then followed up with the meeting at Pensacola which was very well received. Next meeting was to Wausau, Wi going through all of the FDA history and archiving all of it. What a trip down memory lane! Next was the always popular Ski Trip to Aspen followed up by our Caribbean Adventure to Grand Cayman. We then followed up with the last meeting to Sedona which is always a popular venue. I want to thank the Board for their incredible support and leadership during this year that was full of change with issues that required very hands-on attention. I want to welcome Andy Kitchens as your next President. Andy is a remarkable man and the FDA is very fortunate to have him be at the controls. The FDA will continue to flourish under his watch. I want to spend the majority of this article on one of the finest displays of our FDA “family” that I have ever seen. As you all know, long time member Dave “Crash” Craddock passed away the last part of May after a 13 year battle with Cancer. The FDA decided to have a special FDA Memorial Service at Kewanee, Il Airport which I will try to describe: Twelve planes and 60 FDAers who flew commercial or drove descended onto the town of Kewanee over the weekend and braved the horrific

Midwest Weather that has been causing such havoc. We had people from the West Coast, East Coast, Florida, Texas to Minnesota and all points in between share in the following tribute. The weather broke for us and Lynn Keener and Gary Stewart emceed the service with all of us and ½ the town listening intently. Angelyn and Dave’s sister gave tear jerking eulogies for the crowd. Several of us recounted stories of Dave (there are 100’s of them), Gary and Lynn gave some spiritual thoughts with very appropriate Bible verses punctuating the life of Dave; there was not a dry eye in the place. The whole group then moved to the airport for the most unique aviation activity that I have ever seen. Eight pilots/co-pilots and three 210’s and Dave’s Mooney named “The Batmobile” flown by Steve Schell were parked in formation complete with FDA linemen in front of each plane. On queue, they taxied onto the runway and took off one after the other and then formed up in formation and flew over mid-field. The Batmobile pulled up and away leaving the Missing Man Formation with an obvious hole where Dave should be flying. The formation flew outbound and formed up in the traditional 3 ship formation and while all attention was diverted to the 3 planes, the Batmobile appeared out of nowhere and stunned the crowd with a high speed pass exactly as Crash was famous for doing. As that was happening, the 3 ships came in over the runway and with military precision did a StarBurst maneuver that Dave, again, had perfected. They then went back into the Missing Man Formation and flew over midfield and did a military Overhead 360 break to land. After this they taxied back to the parking area leaving a hole for Dave Craddock and were met at their parking space with their linemen with 2 Bikini Clad Line Girls, again that Crash created, two on each of the lineman’s side.

8850 Lynwood Dr.,Seminole, FL 33772

All 30 FDA pilots lined up in a row as Angelyn walked past each pilot with the box containing Dave’s ashes and each of us touched the box telling Dave goodbye. She took the box to Dave Camp; flying a Cub, he took off and came around on long final to scatter Dave’s ashes over the airport. As he was on long final, Valerie Lunt played Amazing Grace on her bagpipes as his ashes were scattered. Incredibly moving. (See photo on page For the next 3 hours, we had an FDA picnic in the hangar telling stories and looking at all the pictures that Angelyn had put on display each taken during the last 15 years of being a Flying Dentist. We all felt closer than family during this whole weekend, a weekend I will never forget as long as I live. I believe each of us had closure with Dave that was incredibly freeing. We all knew that he would have wanted this, his last FDA function, to play out just as it did. We love you Dave Craddock and will miss you. Enjoy Heaven my Friend; I will be there to again be your wingman soon. Steve Mowery

FLYING Dave Craddock FDA Memorial Bench The Board of Directors met with family members of Dave and our mutual desire is to have a Granite Memorial Bench constructed and placed at Kewanee Airport. This will be a first rate bench and have an inscription/plaque placed on it remembering Dave and his involvement with the Flying Dentists Association. These benches are fairly pricey and we are asking that any of us that want to contribute to this endeavor make a check made out to the FDA along with a note to Stacy as to the purpose. Mail to: FDA Home Office - 8850 Lynwood Dr. Seminole FL 33772

Valerie Lunt

When we get all monies collected, we will send the money to Angelyn and she will have the bench constructed and installed. Any money left over will be directed to any of the three memorials that the family has chosen. Thank you for your generosity. FDA Board of Directors

meeting is Bob Adams Field, KSBS, in Steamboat Springs, CO. There are basically three acceptable routes to get to SBS. From the northeast go to Laramie (KLAR) and follow the power lines to the southwest over Walden(33V) and stay over the power lines all the way into Steamboat Springs(KSBS). This is the lowest route to get you into KSBS at 12,500 feet ASL. From the southwest you can start at Pueblo(KPUB) follow the road to the west, over Fremont CO(1V6) to Alexander(KANK) then still

following the road turn north to Central Colorado Regional(AEJ) and follow the road through Tennessee Pass (10,424’), swing to the west of Mt Powell (13,600’) to McElroy (20V) and follow the road north over Rabbit Ears Pass (9573’) into Steamboat Springs. It is also possible to fly west out of Colorado Springs but you have to deal with the Denver International Airport DIA, Class B and climb to 14,500 or higher. The first two routes can be navigated safely at 12,000 or 13,000 VFR. All IFR MEAs are about two thousand feet higher. My recommendation would be to plan to arrive at Laramie

or Pueblo and RON. Then get an early start before the winds pick up and go over the mountains in smooth air. If you go in the afternoon just make sure the winds are below 20 knots for both passenger comfort and safety. Mountain winds can be and unforgiving. Also, remember to cross all passes and ridges at a 45 degree angle to make a turn away from dangerous downdrafts more expedient.

Transportation A rental car will be almost mandatory to enjoy the area around Steamboat Springs. Cars can be reserved by calling Enterprise Car Rental, located in the Sheraton Resort, at 970-879-7442. Be sure to have them deliver the car to Bob Adams Field and provide them an estimated arrival time. The FDA will have two suburbans rented for small group travel and getting back and forth to the hotel from KSBS. If you plan to come commercially, you will need to schedule your arrival into Hayden’s Yampa Valley Airport. There is a shuttle from the airport to the hotel or you can make car reservations right there and drive. Call Budget at 970-276-2086, Hertz at 970-276-3304 or Avis at 970-276-3278. It’s about a 40 to 50 minute drive up through a beautiful valley to Steamboat Springs.

F A L L M EETI N G Fredericksburg Fly-In October 10-13, 2013 It was truly a pleasure to see many of you again at the tribute to my and our close friend, Crash Craddock. Darcie and I very much look forward to spending time with y’all (yes, Texas slang has caught on) again at our fly-in. For years I have heard of the Bluebonnet's blooming in the Hill Country. I figured it was a bit over-rated till we had some rain. It was like colorizing an old movie. The Hill Country beauty is at it's best, and I am not particularly a flower person. Now I get it. After speaking with many members, I realized that many are planning on attending the board meeting/fly-in, but have not made reservations. We have a block of rooms under Flying Dentists that will fill up. I encourage you to make your reservations soon, both with the Hanger Hotel and the FDA.

attended some of our fly-ins. Spearfish SD, Gaston's, Cable WI, Branson, etc. As you remember, they are active with much provided to do and see. So if you want to sit around and read, do it before the fly-in. We like to give you memories to take home and make others wish they had attended. See you there!
