President’s Message It’s hard to believe that 2017 is half over! CalAPT has been busy hosting the Southern California Regional Play Therapy Conference as well as 6.0 CE workshops, 1.5 Chapter meetings and many networking events. CalAPT has great things planned for the remainder of the year, so be sure to check out our Events page! With summer’s arrival thoughts turn to summer vacations, relaxing and recharging. The Northern California Regional Play Therapy Conference is being held in beautiful Avila Beach, California. It’s the perfect location for a summer get away to recharge while learning more about Play Therapy. On Friday, Lisa Dion, LPC, RPT-S will present a full day workshop on Aggression and Death in the Playroom. Saturday will offer presentations on Jungian Play Therapy, Play Therapy in the digital age, Art Therapy and how to Alleviate Stress and Burnout. Register soon, you won’t want to miss this! It is with mixed emotions, I announce my resignation as CalAPT President. My husband and I are relocating to Indiana in the immediate future to be closer to family. I am excited to begin this new adventure while being sad to leave CalAPT. I have served with CalAPT for 7 years and it is difficult to imagine life without planning play therapy events. I have formed deep friendships with many in the Playborhood which will continue long distance. I hope to see many of you in Minneapolis at the Annual APT Conference. Shirla de Magalhaes LMFT, RPT will step into the role of President and the Board will fill the open President-Elect position. CalAPT has created a seamless transition plan. I wish CalAPT continued success in spreading Play Therapy education throughout California. Goodbye, Robin Christpherson, LMFT, RPT, President CalAPT

CalAPT Chapter Updates Central Coast Chapter On May 20th, Rachel McSpadden Tarver, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Registered Play Therapist Supervisor in San Luis Obispo, presented an informative workshop entitled “Supervising the Play Therapist: Incorporating Play in Supervision.” Those attending the workshop learned play based strategies for supervising the budding play therapist through experiential activities and discussion. Playful strategies for addressing counter-transference and other common supervisory issues were discussed as well. In July our chapter is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the Northern California Regional Play Therapy Conference in our local town of Avila. The conference will feature Lisa Dion, LPC, RPT-S and other esteemed presenters. On Friday July 21st Lisa will be presenting a workshop on Aggression and Death in the Playroom: A Neurobiological approach for integrating extreme energy in play therapy. Saturday July 22nd will offer four workshops including topics such as; a Jungian approach to play therapy, Play Therapy in the digital era, Art Therapy in the Playroom, and Play Therapy Approaches to Alleviate Stress and Burnout. We hope you will join us for one or both days.  Shannon Pacaon ~ President Central Coast

Central Valley Chapter The Central Valley Chapter hosted it's Networking Social Event on Friday April 21st, 2017.  Our Chapter would like to give a special thank you to Mia Cuppa Cafe for donating their space for this event!  The social event included networking with local therapists, an intervention exchange, and a raffle! Chapter officers are in the process of solidifying our officer slate for the 2018 Calendar year as well as planning our 1.5CE event in September.  Stay tuned for details! Patrick Neely, LMFT ~ President, Central Valley Chapter

CalAPT Chapter Updates Orange County Chapter On April 29th the Orange County Chapter APT officers, hosted a fun networking meeting and tour of playrooms at Kaiser Permanente, Laguna Hills. The meeting provided the opportunity to meet the 2017 officers, meet and network with others interested in play therapy, learn about ways to stay connected with CALAPT through social media, and even become members. We toured two play therapy rooms which were equipped with fun and exciting toys and activities. We gathered recommendations for toys to use in our own playrooms and also how to use regular house hold items in innovative ways (my favorite was the “pooper scooper” to pick up toys from the sandbox). After the tour Jennifer Harber taught us how to make a “coping skills” wheel to help kids learn to identify and use their own copings skills. It was a great event and we plan to continue hosting more networking events so we get to know others in the Orange County area who are interested in play therapy. In fact, on July 8th from 10 to 12:30 pm we will be hosting another networking event and picnic at the park. If you love the outdoors and want to learn new ways to use nature in your play therapy room, please come join us at Lower Peters Canyon Park in Irvine.

Sacramento Chapter It’s hard to believe it’s June and we’re half way through our playful year of 2017. The Sacramento Chapter has been busy. In April, we hosted our chapter founder, Lyla Tyler, LMFT, RPT-S. Lyla presented on the topic of “Play Therapy with Children Dealing with Separation or Divorce”. Lyla has over 30 years of experience working in the children’s mental health field and is trained in Experiential Play Therapy, Art Therapy, EMDR, Trauma Resiliency Model, and Theraplay. Lyla drew in the crowds and we had a packed house. On June 24th, Susan Kelsey, LMFT, RPT-S, will present a 1.5 CE workshop, “Discovering the Therapeutic Powers of Play”. Susan has dedicated her practice entirely to providing Play Therapy to children for the last 18 years. Having earned a degree in Neuroscience, she has a particular interest in the neurobiology of trauma. She gives workshops on the quality treatment of children internationally, and has a private practice in Fremont. In September, our 6 CEU trainer will be Kimberly Bartlett, LCSW, RPT-S. And our final event of the year will be a networking event with a presentation, to be held in November. I hope this message finds you all well and everyone is looking forward to a playful year. Intervention Feature: Personalized Collages By Lisa Shadburn, PsyD (CalAPT Board Member) Many therapists use collages as a helpful tool to promote self-expression. I have found that giving clients the opportunity to add photos of themselves to their collages allows them to further personalize their experience, and helps them envision their hopes and wishes in a unique way by putting themselves into the scenes and “worlds” that they create through the collage process. This activity is great for clients of all ages, from very young children to adults. It is also helpful in different stages of therapy, for it can be used early in the therapeutic process as a “getting to know you” activity, and it can also be a valuable termination tool that helps clients look toward their future goals. Goals: Self-expression, goal-setting, instilling hope, building positive feelings Supplies: Photo of client (taken in a prior session) printed in multiple copies/variety of sizes; magazines with photos of various places, people, and things that may interest client; scissors, glue sticks, paper Instructions: 1) Prior to doing this activity, take a photo of the client in a previous session. Print the photo in a variety of sizes for this activity. 2) Invite clients to look through the magazines and choose pictures or drawings that represent something they like, including things they are good at, places they want to go or things they want to do in the future. 3) Invite clients to cut out the pictures and glue them onto paper. You can put the pictures all on one page, or use multiple pages if desired and create a book. 4) Cut out the client photos and have the clients glue them onto the collage wherever they would like to “put themselves in the picture”. 5) Ask clients to imagine themselves going to the places and doing the things in the pictures. Ask them to identify feelings and thoughts they would have while doing those things. To help clients identify social support, you may ask them if there is anyone they would like to bring with them on their “adventure.” 6) After clients have finished the project, invite them to create a title for the book or page (such as “My Adventures,” “My Magical Places,” “All About Me,” or “My future travels.”)   Variations: For clients who like to draw, this activity can be done with drawings rather than magazine pictures. It can also be done on the computer using images and clipart. For more play therapy ideas and information from Dr. Lisa Shadburn, you can find her on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ Dr.LisaShadburnPlayTherapy

Play Therapy Resource: By Mari Ulate, MFTI (San Bernardino Chapter) Mindfulness is becoming more and more prominent as a useful tool to help children in multiple settings including school and therapy. But What is this new craze called mindfulness? One definition of mindfulness is "a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique" (Google). I love this definition. In practicing mindfulness, our young clients become aware of their feelings (emotional or physical) in the moment while practicing remaining calm. The Positive Psychology Program website has a wonderful blog listing ideas, games, activities, and exercises to teach young children thru adolescents mindfulness practices. The blog also summarizes the social, emotional, and cognitive benefits of mindfulness from various studies.  I have successfully used many of the games and activities described to assist clients in self-regulation. I work with children 6 years old and under and so I need simple effective ways to engage and teach self-regulation to young children. The section of this article titled ‘Mindfulness Meditation for Very Young Children’ has been very helpful. I found the breathing activities such as blowing bubbles or pinwheels useful in helping children practice deep breathing. The texture bag described in the section titled ‘Mindfulness Games for Kids’, helps children stay grounded by focusing on the texture and touch of objects in a bag. Another activity I have used is the Body Scan which calls for children to tighten and relax different muscles of their body. When paired with a child-friendly relaxation script, children love it! This resource also contains a wonderful list of apps and video clips on mindfulness. Technology is an integral part of our lives and this resource provides ways to use technology that may benefit and interest children! There are so many ideas listed to teach mindfulness to school age children and adolescents. Be sure to check it out! Also stay tuned for the San Bernardino Chapter’s upcoming 1.5 CE workshop on Yoga and Play Therapy featuring Brianna Belcher, LCSW, RYT.
