Karangalan Filipino Educator Scholarship 2016-2017 Karangalan is a Tagalog word that means, “pride, dignity, and honor”. The Karangalan Scholarship, sponsored by the friends and family of the Filipino educators of the Sweetwater Union High School District, will be awarded to outstanding Filipino-American senior students in the Sweetwater Union High School District who have demonstrated excellence in academics and community involvement. Be a high school senior of Filipino/Filipino-American descent enrolled in the Sweetwater Union High School District. Have a minimum 3.0 college weighted GPA Have applied to a 4 year college/university as a full-time student
Scholarship recipients will be selected according to the following criteria: 1. 2. 3. 4.
Academic achievement 30% Leadership, Extracurricular & community involvement activities 25% 2 letters of recommendation (One letter must be from an educator, the other letter from a community member not related to the applicant.) 25% Written essay 20%

Essay Answer one of the two questions below. Your essay should be no longer than 2 pages typed and double‐spaced with 12‐point font. A scoring guide with a rubric is attached. 1) Discuss a current event involving Filipinos or the Philippines that has made an impact on you. Explain the significance of the current event in today’s society and why it is important to you. 2) If you are involved in a Filipino American organization(s), what is the goal, purpose, or objective of the organization(s)? Discuss why you are involved, what your role is, what activities and events your organization has sponsored that you were involved with and what insights you have gained.
