Introduction to review and test prep

Welcome teachers! Since you’ve made your way to this guide, you must be ready to learn about using Khan Academy for review and test prep! We understand how challenging it can be to help a classroom full of students with diverse skill levels and misconcep@ons achieve mastery of a large number of standards. Help is on the way! When you add Khan Academy to your rou@ne it becomes easy to differen@ate review to meet each child’s needs. Students can work independently on the exact skills they need to master and get immediate feedback and clarifica@on along the way. This frees up extra @me for you to provide one-onone support. And teachers who need to reserve a school computer lab find that with this model they can set up a schedule of assignments that works well for them and their students. In this guide, you’ll find @ps and ideas from real teachers who use Khan Academy for test prep and review. Think of their educator-to-educator advice as a star@ng point for geUng up and running quickly and easily. As you and your students become more familiar with Khan Academy, you can adapt the review model to fit your own style as well as the needs of your students.

Let’s explore using Khan Academy for review and test prep!

Incorporating Khan Academy into your review routine How can I use Khan Academy for review? Many teachers find it effec@ve to bundle review topics twice a month. For example, a teacher may assign five videos, two ar@cles, and five exercises all at once and specify a due date one to two weeks later. Students can either complete all of the work during class periods or begin the review assignment in class, but finish it on their own @me. It’s up to you!

When should I use Khan Academy for review? SeUng aside an en@re class period for review twice each month is a great way to use Khan Academy. For example, you might use Khan Academy every other Friday for a 60-minute period.

What content should I assign? Depending on where each student is, you may decide to assign remedia@on content, on-grade-level content, or above-grade-level content. To learn more about differen@a@on, download our differen@a@on and remedia@on how-to guide (bit.ly/2rqEp8s).

How do I choose which topics to assign? You can use the reports available on your Coach dashboard to determine which topics are most important for your students to review. Then, search Khan Academy for content aligned with those concepts.

Example teacher rou)ne As you become more familiar with Khan Academy’s resources, you’ll develop a rou@ne that fits your specific needs. But in the beginning, it can be helpful to know how other teachers have used our materials for review.

Before the lesson About twice a month, try spending 30 to 45 minutes browsing resources and assigning review material to individual students, groups of students, or your en@re class.

During the lesson During the period you’ve set aside for review, students can prac@ce their assigned review exercises either in the computer lab or on devices in the classroom. Make sure to encourage students to watch suppor@ng videos and use hints to persist through problems that are challenging. While most of your class works independently, you may want to provide extra support to any students who you’ve iden@fied as candidates for more intensive remedia@on. Monitoring the Ac@vity tab is a great way to see if students are on task. During the last few minutes of class, consider asking students to reflect on the day’s assignments. A good wri@ng prompt might be, “Which topic did you find most challenging, and what did you do when you felt stuck?”

When the assignment is due Set the due date for your review assignment to coincide with a formal assessment so you can assess the skills prac@ced on Khan Academy alongside performance on an assessment you or your grade-level team has designed.

Practical tips from current classroom teachers Use the Content tab to preview and assign a mix of videos, ar)cles, and exercises to review.

Content tab

Khan Academy’s database includes more than 10,000 standards-based prac@ce problems and related ar@cles and videos. While there are mul@ple ways to find the right content, most teachers prefer to browse and assign content using the Content tab because it allows you to perform mul@ple func@ons on one page. •

Preview a resource

Make a single assignment that includes mul@ple pieces of content from any combina@on of subjects and units.

Preview all content before assigning it—videos, ar@cles, and even the exact problems in a given exercise, quiz, or unit test.

Supplement your observa)ons with Khan Academy reports to help differen)ate review.

Report filter

Khan Academy provides a range of reports that help you meet the diverse needs of all your students while ensuring they remain engaged and mo@vated during review. Reports can be used to see performance by item, exercise, quiz, test, skill, or standard at the class, subgroup, or individual student level.

Content tab

Differen@a@on starts in the Content tab when making assignments. Based on previous performance on similar exercises, you can easily assign tailored bundles of review topics to subgroups with similar needs, or even to specific individuals. For example, you might want a handful of students to complete a video, ar@cle, and exercise on the area of triangles while others in the class simultaneously review more complex shapes. Or perhaps you decide to assign one group of students less material because you intend to spend extra @me tutoring them during the in-class review period.

Use up-to-the-minute reports during class to take ac)on.

Exercise performance report

Once the review session begins, keep an eye on the exercise performance reports to see if a significant por@on of the class is struggling with a specific skill. If a topic is par@cularly challenging, you may decide to pause and model a problem for the whole class, carve out @me for extra review during a subsequent class period, or offer an akerschool review opportunity.

Students tend to like taking tests on Khan Academy because of the instant feedback and the op@on to retake, depending on teacher. Assigning quizzes and tests works the same way it does for exercises.
