POLITICAL SOLICITATIONS IN SCHOOLS Political action in its present level is the true exercise of democracy. Opposing views of issues must be reviewed and more importantly, the school in its mission must recognize the unique position of both. Often schools request moneys, buildings, etc. from political coffers. These times always create the “for and against” positions. As a responsible agent of the government, the schools must never be seen as using this unique position and its moneys to actively promote one issue. Thus, it shall be the policy of the Westbrook School Committee to: A.
Prohibit signs of a political nature on all vehicles controlled by the School Committee
B.
Refrain from the distribution of flyers whose express purpose is to solicit voter support
It is imperative from the School Committee frame of reference that this policy not be used to limit reasonable political action nor to limit information to the public on issues within the community. Distribution of flyers announcing informational meetings are not prohibited in this policy.
