Positive Behaviors Every effort will be made to encourage students to follow the school and classroom norms. While it is most desirable that the students realize that they should treat each other with respect and fairness because it is the right thing to do, I recognize that external rewards are sometimes necessary, particularly at the start of the year. The following approaches will be used in varying degrees to acknowledge and highlight behavior consistent with the class rules and responsibilities: 1. Frequent positive verbal feedback, personal notes to the child and notes, e-mails and calls to home; 2. Special jobs and responsibilities - special opportunities to run special errands, help the teacher and other students; 3. “Bucket filler stars and hearts” - tickets good for prizes in our classroom drawings and in the school’s monthly card drawing; 4. Opportunities to participate in special school events designed to acknowledge consistent observance of class and school procedures and rules. 5. Stickers and other small material rewards.
Thematic Instruction A way of teaching and learning, in which all the areas of the curriculum and the elements of the school day are connected together by a common theme.

Handwriting
We are excited about the Kindergarten handwriting program that we are using this school year. Handwriting Without Tears (HWT) is a simple, developmentally based curriculum for printing. The program uses fun, multi-sensory techniques to teach letter formation and eliminate reversals of letters. Our goal is to make handwriting a natural and automatic skill. You'll receive more information about how to help at home in your first homework folder.
