KINGS OF
Thurs. 11th May Materials needed Your students’ and your own voices Lyrics YouTube clips (links below) Jury (2 students from each class + yourselves) 2 sets of 3 laminated comments (from AST – one per class) Stages (before Thursday) You’ll need to prepare your students for the competition. On Monday: 1. Warmer – play hangman with the word karaoke. Then elicit what it involves, why people do it and why it helps to improve your English. 2. Either choose the song for your class yourself or have the ss choose the song they would like to sing. The only conditions are: It’s appropriate and G-rated (nothing that you wouldn’t play to kids ) It’s an upbeat song. It’s in English (obviously ). It has a karaoke version available on YouTube. 3. You can start practising it now that we have better internet! 4. After class:
Find the lyrics for the chosen song and put it on our letterhead (attached to the email). Then, photocopy the lyrics. This is so your ss can continue to practise at home. You can also use it as a base for an activity if you like (e.g. analyse vocabulary etc.). Download the video from YouTube onto your classroom computer and the room you will be performing in (see the schedule below) so that you can easily access it to practise and perform. You can either: i. Ask Elie or Mirna to help you. ii. Do it yourself by following the steps below (it’s super easy!) 1. Open http://keepvid.com/ 2. Copy the YouTube link of your video into the box shown. 3. Click download.
4. Click on the download box again but the one after ‘Download Pro’
5. Save in on your desktop and the one in the class you’ll be performing in. You can do this just before or just after class. Trust me it won’t take long with our new and improved internet. Tuesday – Thursday 5. Sing and practise in class until they are ready. If you can teach them some dancing even better, it’ll make it even more fun and memorable! 6. Look at the schedule below to see which class you’ll be competing against, when and where. Stages (on performance day - Thursday) 1. Nominate 2 students who will act as the jury (along with yourselves). Give them the laminated comments cards from AST. Tell them that they’ll need to be as objective as possible, use the comments cards and give both classes feedback on things like performance, pronunciation, being in tune etc. No scores this time, it’s all about practice and fun! 2. Make sure that the YouTube clips have been downloaded before class so that time isn’t wasted whilst the clip buffers. 3. The classroom is your stage – now let the classes perform and show off their amazing voices! 4. Have the jury give feedback (cards and their own comments) and make sure you do too. 5. All up this should take 20-30 minutes max. 6. Return comments cards to AST so that they can be used for the next classes. If you have any questions, don’t think twice to ask me. Can’t wait to hear your beautiful voices! Yasmin
