Salute To Small Business honorees announced In the Monterey region, small businesses make a big impact, accounting for more than 9,000 of the county's total businesses. And it's their activity that keeps the area vibrant, supplying valuable jobs and delivering the goods and services that make our lives a bit easier. But small businesses rarely get recognition for the hard work they do to make our region a better place to live and work. The Salute to Small Business awards program recognizes the important contributions these businesses make to Monterey County and its surrounding communities, as well as the economic growth of the region and the state. Union Bank and KSBW-TV are proud to present this program. BEST AGRIBUSINESS: L.A. Hearne Company Feed And Ranch Supply L.A. Hearne Company Feed & Ranch Supply has been owned and managed by the same local family since 1938. The Company employs approximately 100 full-time employees and are supporters of many local organizations such as the Monterey County Agricultural and Rural Life Museum, Monterey County Fair, California Salinas Rodeo, and Monterey County Dance Foundation. Later he started the business of fabricating and installing irrigation pipes in the artichoke fields and slowly became more involved in the plumbing of homes. The business is now owned by his granddaughter Anna, her husband Carlo Cortopassi, and children Cindy and Paul. The family is active in the community and proud to be in business for over 80 years, keeping the business in the family for three generations. ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR: Local Catch Business planning for Local Catch began in the fall of 2009, led by Alan Lovewell and a team of talented graduate students at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, to research the feasibility of community-supported fisheries (CSFs) similar to those emerging on the East Coast. CSFs like Local Catch connect local fishermen with local families and individuals for weekly deliveries of local, sustainable seafood. The business was launched in 2012 and now serves over 500 members and supports a core group of over 25 local fishermen. BEST HOSPITALITY: Salad Shoppe Located in Historic Steinbeck country and celebrating their 28th anniversary, the Salad Shoppe opened their doors with the idea of providing the Salinas Valley community with the greatest customer service and an affordable healthy meal option.
