Bethany Sebald SPE 325 Lab 2 Date: 2/18/16 Lab Section 2 Group Members: Tyler Koehler, Josh Washington, Amanda Albert Demographic Data: • Height: 175 cm • Weight: 86 kg • Age: 21 Protocol: Astrand Questions: 1. Compare the VO2 value from the last minute of the last exercise segment completed by the subject to the values for the subject’s age group in Table HE-10-L7 or Table HE-10-L8. • VO2 – 60.38 2. Determine the fitness level of the subject based on the subject’s VO2 level. • Fitness Level: Excellent 3. What is the subject’s RER in the last minute of the last exercise segment completed? • RER for last minute of exercise – 1.36 4. In which minute of which segment does the slope of VE/VO2 change significantly? This dramatic increase in slope indicates the anaerobic threshold. • The slope changes at approximately 9:15. This occurs in stage 5 of the protocol. 5. If the work performed is also being recorded, at which workload is the ratio of VO2/HR the greatest? Reflection:
In this lab, we used the Astrand protocol to complete a VO2 max test. Before
completing the lab, I knew little about VO2 max testing. Upon completing the lab, I had learned various protocols that could be used, what data we were looking to collect, and what the data means. According to the protocol we used, we were to run at 5 mph for the entire test and increase the incline of the treadmill every few minutes. The test was not difficult at first, but it progressively got harder and harder. We were to run until for as long
as we could, and then data was collected. The two main things we were looking for were the VO2 max and the RER. A person’s VO2 max is their maximum oxygen uptake, and is a good test of aerobic endurance. RER stands for respiratory exchange ratio, and is a ratio of VCO2/VO2, or the amount of carbon dioxide produced and the amount of oxygen used. Both of these are good predictors of a person’s fitness level, especially in aerobic activities.
