May 31, 2016 – Despite the many challenges that our winter weather posed, we are fast approaching the end to another school year. Lakeview Community Schools had a great year athletically and academically. Our student-athletes brought home conference championships in softball, the first softball championship in 41 years, earned a District title in Boys’ Basketball, and earned a playoff appearance in football. Additionally, we had a host of students qualify individually for regional competition in Boys’/Girls’ Golf and Track. Finally, we had several students qualify for the individual state bowling and wrestling tournament. However, our most impressive achievement during the 2015-16 school year was Lakeview Middle School being removed from the State’s “Focus School” list for their improved student achievement scores, specifically, the academic growth of the students in the bottom 30% on previous state assessments. Clearly, Lakeview Community Schools are producing results on and off the field. Graduation: Congratulations to the graduating class of 2016! Graduation was held on Sunday, June 5, 2016. I am excited to announce that we had ninety-one (91) students graduate this school year. A few interesting facts regarding our recent graduates: A recent survey of our 2016 graduates indicated that 85% of our graduates will attend either a two or four year college/university, join the armed forces or enroll in a trade/vocational school. A total of 216 college applications were submitted 70% of our students completed FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Our graduating seniors received $62,250 in local scholarships Our students were offered $1,089,600 in university scholarship awards during Senior Honors Night. Our students will use approximately $530,700 over the next four years at the universities they choose to attend. 2016-17 Calendar: A new legislative requirement mandates 180 student school days starting in the 2016-17 school year. This is an increase of five (5) days for schools in Montcalm County. In an effort to better align with Montcalm Community College, all seven (7) of the local schools in Montcalm County applied and received a waiver to start school prior to Labor Day. Our first day of school will be on August 29, 2016. June 6, 2017 is our tentatively planned last day of school. A copy of the 2016-17 calendar has been included on Page 4 for your convenience. Please do not hesitate to contact me by email at [email protected] or by phone at 989-352-6226 if you have any questions or concerns. Have a great summer! Sincerely,

Kyle Hamlin, Superintendent Lakeview Community Schools

District Happenings

Eighth graders reenacted Pickett’s (also Pettigrew & Trimble’s) Charge. The blue and gray clad youngsters drilled during the morning hours in humid, 85 degree conditions, and later put their lives on the line in defense of their two nations.

Lakeview High School’s History Club visited Ft. St. Joseph near Niles, MI. The trip included a history lesson from the Ft. St. Joseph Museum curator followed by a walking tour of the excavation site along the St. Joseph River. Underwater archaeologists will be exploring the river bottom in the near future and are hoping to locate the Fort Palisade Wall. Students from Western Michigan University will continue archaeological digs this summer. The History Club included fifteen intelligent, talented, cheerful, and open-minded students.

On Friday, May 13th , students from Ms. Poll’s, Mrs. Flynn’s and Mrs. Fettig’s classes participated in the Area Six Summer Special Olympic Games in Greenville. Students participated in a variety of events including 50/100/200 meter dash, standing/running long jump, shot put and softball throw. Not only did our athletes enjoy a chance to compete, but it was a time to make new friends and reconnect with old ones. Throughout the day our students exemplified the spirit of Special Olympics: Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt!

Great Lakes, Great Education, Great Fun! 10 Grade Trip to Lake Michigan a Great Success th

For many who live in Michigan the Great Lakes are simply considered part or our collective “back yard.” For the 10th grade students at LHS, the Great Lakes became a laboratory for examination and understanding on May 19th. On a beautiful Thursday morning, the entire sophomore class at Lakeview High School headed for Duck Lake State Park on the shores of Lake Michigan for a study of this unique, threatened, and amazing ecosystem that is The Great Lakes. At its conclusion, all students had gained a heightened level of understanding of the importance of these lakes that surround and impact us each and every day in Michigan. The trip for the 10th grade was a culmination of a week-long interdisciplinary unit on The Great Lakes. This unit took a comprehensive look at the importance of the lakes from an economical, environmental, as well as mathematical perspective. Throughout this unit, students discussed and researched aspects of the lakes such as the tourism industry, the shipping industry, invasive species, water quality, water levels, etc. Students examined the relationships that exist between all of these aspects and how, for example, water levels can adversely impact shipping and can lead to higher prices on a variety of products. With this increased level of understanding, students now possess a heightened respect for all aspects of the Great Lakes and realize the importance of protecting this gift that has been bestowed upon the Midwest region of our United States. This is the second year that the 10th Grade students have had this opportunity at experiential learning. This was the third trip for the sophomores this year, added on to the Grand Rapids trip in September to the Grand Rapids Public Museum and Artprize as well as to Greenville to view the movie The Finest Hours. These trips are attempting to fulfill a need of our students to expand their learning beyond the walls of LHS. The expansive Great Lakes was and always will be one “great way” to accomplish that goal. To sum it up in an over utilized word, the trip was simply GREAT!!
