South Korean League of Legends team Samsung White won the Season 4 World Championship in October, and the broadcast was one of the biggest sporting events of the year. The final, which was held in Seoul’s World Cup Stadium, was streamed online and watched by 27 million unique viewers. For comparison, the 2014 World Series averaged 15.8 million viewers (a number boosted by the unbelievable Game 7 ratings). The HeatSpurs NBA Finals series averaged 15.5 million viewers. 26.5 million people watched the World Cup final in the United States. The 2014 Daytona 500 averaged just 9.3 million viewers. Over the course of the entire World Championship tournament – which was played in Taiwan, Singapore and Korea over 15 days – viewers watched for a combined 179 million hours (or more than 20,000 years). The 27 million viewers for the final is down from 32 million last year, but the move from Los Angeles’ Staples Center to South Korea meant that the broadcast began at 3 a.m. on the East Coast, which made it more difficult for American viewers to watch. Even so, cumulative time spent watching increased by more than 100 million hours for the Season 4 finals compared to Season 3. eSports might not ever catch up with the NFL, but you could argue that League of Legends is already one of the biggest sports in the country.
