Probing weakly bound molecules with nonresonant light Mikhail Lemeshko and Bretislav Friedrich Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Faradayweg 4-6, D-14195 Berlin, Germany We propose a technique of probing molecules, independent of spectroscopy or scattering. Based on dissociation by nonresonant laser pulses, the technique recovers the square of the vibrational wavefunction and, by inversion, also the long-range part of the molecular potential Vibrational structure of weakly bound molecules • The WKB approximation breaks down near threshold for dissociation. Therefore, the classic LeRoy-Bernstein formula [JCP 52, 3869 (1970)] does not work correctly

V(r) vth

• Numerous improvements were proposed: Boisseau et al, EPJD 12, 199 (2000); Comparat, JCP 120, 1318 (2004), Jelassi et al, PRA 77, 062515 (2008)

Eb

• Recently, Patrick Raab and Harald Friedrich derived a quatization function [PRA 78, 022707 (2008)]:

r

v

F (E b)=v th− v , where E b is the binding energy of a level with vibrational quantum number v, and vth is a noninteger quantum number a level would have at the threshold

• The quantization function has a simple analytic form and describes the vibrational structure of weakly bound molecules with high accuracy Rotational structure of weakly bound molecules • If the rotational angular momentum J exceeds some critical value J*, the molecule dissociates. Integer part of J* gives the number of possible rotational states • We found that J*=F(E b )(n −2 ) , where F(E b ) is the quantization function of Raab and Friedrich, and n is the power of the potential V(r) = −Cn /r n

J > J*

3

ħ , where m is the reduced mass and C6 is the coefficient of the asymtotic inverse-power potential; 1/2 3/2 m C6 d ≈ 1.6 is a universal dimenstionless parameter, which can be evaluated analytically

• A molecule is rotationless if its binding energy satisfies E b < d 6

v (J > J*)

V(r) Eb

r

J=0

v (J = 0)

• Estimates of the rotational constants of weakly bound states are given by: B =E b / J * (J * + 1) • These analytic expressions are surprisingly accurate Is angular momentum always quantized? J=0

2

• In the absence of a field it is: J = J(J+1) is an integer for states with J=0,1,2... • However, in the presence of a field, this is not true! An external field, such as a laser field, hybridizes rotational levels, forming a “pendular state”:

+ 0.48

0.87

~ J=0

J=4

J=2

=

+ 0.06

ε

• The field provides a molecule with a noninteger value of J2 . The molecule is aligned and its axis librates about the field vector: the laser field “shakes” the molecule

Can one make use of it? Yes, one can. • The laser field adds a centrifugal term to the molecular potential V(r) so that the effective potential becomes Veff (r) = V(r) +

• If the imparted angular momentum J exceeds the critical value J*, the molecule is shaken enough by the field to dissociate

2

J

nonresonant light shakes the molecule

, and thus can be tuned by varying the laser intensity

Eb

r

no field

2 • Usually, the values of J* are quite small, since most of halo molecules are rotationless. For example the last vibrational state of Rb 2 dissociates for J ≥ 0.27

What happens if the laser pulse is short? “Short” means “shorter than the rotational period”. The figure shows the time dependence of transferred angular momentum J2 (solid lines) for pulses of the same intensity, Δω =100, but of different duration (dotted lines)

• For a cw-laser field, J is constant • If the pulse duration exceeds the rotational period, J is imparted adiabatically: the molecule end up with no extra angular momentum after the pulse has passed

60

J

2

• If the pulse duration is shorter than the rotational period, the process is nonadiabatic: the molecule has some angular momentum left after the pulse

20 40

• In the case of a very short pulse, most of the angular momentum is imparted for good. This angular momentum remains in place unless the system is perturbed If the nonadiabatically imparted J

exceeds the critical value, the molecule is shaken enough to dissociate

Time, rotational periods

And... if the pulse is even shorter? If the pulse duration is shorter than the vibrational period, the transferred angular momentum depends on the internuclear distance. Consequently, for different internuclear distances, we need different intensities to dissociate the molecule Thus, we can probe the vibrational dynamics

14

10

For any intensity I there is a critical distance r*. If the internuclear distance is smaller than r* at the moment when the pulse strikes, the molecule dissociates

13

10

r*

F(r*) = |ψv (r)|2 dr 0

I, W / cm

Here comes the idea: • One can measure F(I) • One can calculate I(r*) • Hence, one can obtain the square of the vibrational wavefunction!

This probability is simply the integral of the squared wavefunction:

2

No dissociation occurs for larger internuclear separations. So, for any intensity I the probability of dissociation is the probability of hitting at an internuclear distance smaller than r*(I)

What about experiments?

• Nonresonant fields of optical dipole traps are sufficient to dissociate some of the weakest-bound molecules. Trap loss due to shaking might have occured in some experiments 0.1 8

Rb 2 in the least-bound state is already a long-range molecule. However, it may be transferred to a “pure halo regime” using a cw-laser field. The intensity needed is 6.5 ×10 W/cm

2

• Polar molecules, such as KRb, can be probed by half-cycle pulses of a much smaller intensity, due to a permanent dipole interaction • Other possibilities: tuning the scattering length and the positions of Feshbach resonances, precluding ultracold atoms from colliding, creating ultracold molecules via shape resonances,
