Lesson 1: His Masterpiece!

!

This weekend is gonna be a great weekend full of color! Full of fun and competition! Full of meaning! Full of Spirituality! Full of change!!

! I was once told that there are 3 important things for you to consider about you:! ! 1. 2. 3. 4.

!

How do you see yourself?! What do you think about God?! How does God see you?! What do you think God thinks about when he thinks about you?!

We want you to leave this weekend changed because you finally see yourself as God sees you! We want you to feel worth it, like YOU MATTER, like you were created for a reason (for a purpose), and we want to start seeing yourself as God sees you!!

!

I wanna start this weekend with a video. (Story of Christian) ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lMZBwkrxVY!

! This is a video that completely changed my life and how I look at people. ! ! Do you realize that God created Christian? Do you realize that he is another child of God’s? ! ! Have you ever considered that you are a child of HIS? That God created you…and not only created you, but made you with all your imperfections, your blemishes, your quirks, your personality…and HE did it that way for a reason!!!

! I want you to start seeing yourself the way that God sees you! ! ! Listen to what God says about in Ephesians 2:10 (our theme verse this weekend):! !

“For you are HIS masterpiece created in Christ Jesus for good works which God planned beforehand (just for you).” !

! I don’t know about you but that is life-changing for me!!!! !

Listen to what that means: Christian is God’s masterpiece!! I am God’s masterpiece!! You are God’s masterpiece!! !

! Let’s pray together! ! !

God, I wanna say thank you for making me into one of your masterpieces. Thank you for creating me just the way that you have. And thank you for loving me just the way you made me. Thank you for each of masterpieces here this weekend. I pray this weekend that you will help us to see ourselves the way that you see us, instead of how our enemy tells us we look. I pray that if there is anyone here this weekend that needs to be shown love…that they will find it in YOU and in your people. Thank you for each masterpiece! Amen!!

Lesson 2: Kaleidoscopes “…created in Christ Jesus…”!

When I was about 7 years old my family and I went on a trip to Chattanooga to go to Ruby Falls and Rock City. 2 of the most beautiful places I have ever been in my life.!

!

Ruby Falls is an underground cavern (cave) like thing where they have found tons of beautiful rock formations…and an actual underground waterfall! Pretty cool place. !

!

Rock City is another really neat place in Chattanooga with lots of…you guessed it…ROCKS. It actually looks like a Rock City…!

!

Rock city is home to LookOut Mountain where you can see on a clear day…7 Different States. Really a cool place. And every time that I go to either of these places I am amazed at the beauty and the magnitude of God. !

!

God shows His beauty in many different ways, but my most favorite way is through Rock Formations. Think about the power it takes to move rocks…to mold rocks, to shape them, to create with them…think about the magnitude of some rocks…!

!

I mean God created mountains out of rock!!! I love to hike and climb, I don’t get to do it much anymore, but when I was in college almost every weekend we were going somewhere to climb or explore. When I got the opportunity to go to Italy for a semester of college…I had made it up in my mind that I was gonna at least attempt to climb some of the tallest peaks in the world in the ALPS. !

!

So some buddies and I decided to find a place to hike. We hopped on a train in Italy not having any clue where we were going or what the destination would be…but we decided that we would just watch out the windows until we saw the mountain that we wanted to climb. Finally, after about 7 hours on a train…WE SAW IT!!! AWWW….Shining in all of its glory!! It was almost as though, God had opened up the heavens and shined down on that specific mountain just for us, because it was a very gloomy, rainy day…but that mountain was the only place we saw sunshine! !

!

We hopped off the train…and just started walking until we got to the mountain…it turned out to be 3 towns over…mountains always seem closer than they actually are. But as we made the trek over to the foot of the mountain…we started thinking about how bad of an idea this was, but it didn't faze us much…we were determined to climb that mountain! !

!

So we finally found a trail that looked like it would take us to the top…we started climbing…and climbing…and climbing, we just knew we would summit the mountain in one day, so we didn't bring any tents or anything. But that mountain was a beast!!!!

!

We spent the night on that mountain and again were reminded of what a bad idea this was…but determined, we got up the next morning ready to summit and made it as the sun was about 30 minutes from going down. Everytime that I climb or see a mountain…I am reminded of the beautiful form of mountains. !

!

Did you know there is a word that actually means, “beautiful form to see” in our english language? !

Believe it or not the word is KALEIDOSCOPE. It is built from several different words that literally mean “beautiful form to see”. !

!

There are some kaleidoscopes that are actually worth a lot of money…in fact one sold not too long ago at auction for $75,000 dollars. Now the one that I have this morning…isn’t quite worth that…but just short of it coming in at a whopping 75cents!!!!

! Do you remember the first time that you looked into a kaleidoscope? ! !

You may have heard a rattling in the far end of the brightly-colored cardboard tube as you lifted it to your eye like a spyglass. Perhaps you were skeptical, but when you peered in, you were amazed by the burst of color and intricate design at the other end. !

!

No matter how long you played with that fascinating device, or how many times you turned or shook the end, you never saw the exact same pattern twice.!

!

Hundreds of thousands of people have looked into kaleidoscopes before, but none have ever viewed an identical image. !

! Does anybody know how a Kaleidoscope works? Somebody tell me if they can…! !

The secret behind the Kaleidoscope is actually a series of mirrors that are placed in the device that reflect the objects inside. It is actually extremely complicated to understand, so I’m not even gonna attempt to do that this morning. !

! But here is what you need to know about kaleidoscopes:! ! 1. They are unique! 2. They reflect!

! Do you remember what we said the word actually means? “Beautiful Form to See”! ! Let’s go back to Ephesians 2:10.! ! “You are His masterpiece created in Christ Jesus…”! ! Let’s read that again…you are his masterpiece, CREATED IN CHRIST JESUS!! ! If that isn't reason enough to shout for joy I don’t know what is…we are created in CHRIST. ! ! God has created us in such a beautiful form…the human body is an amazing thing. How it works is incredible, the things it can do are unlike anything else that God created…!

! And when God created man, listen to what he says in Genesis 1:27 and 31! !

“So God created man in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them…and God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was VERY GOOD.”!

!

Not until he created something in His own image did he say, it is very good!!

But I am left with the question of how long was man very good to HIM? !

!

Because soon after he created man, sin crept into the world…and eventually God would even cleanse the world of its wickedness with the flood…!

!

Were we still a beautiful form to see? Were we still the kaleidoscopes that God created us to be? !

! I fully believe God would say, YES! Because listen to that verse again in Ephesians 2. ! ! “You are HIS masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus…”! ! But to understand that verse we need to go back to the beginning of chapter 2. ! !

And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved…! Listen to what he says, !

- You were dead in sin…! - But because of God’s love for us…HE saved us by HIS Grace.! - Even while we were sinners. ! Now read verse 10…because you have been loved and saved by grace through the waters of baptism…! “You are His Masterpiece, created anew in Christ…”! Our beautiful form is seen in Christ!!! ! But how? Our beautiful form is seen in Christ when we reflect his beauty…his form…think about the kaleidoscope, its beauty comes from the objects inside it, but is seen by us through these mirrors…that is CHRISTIANITY! ! I want to challenge you to be a KALEIDOSCOPE for God! Mirror the Savior, reflect his beauty. And remember that God sees you as a “beautiful form to see through Christ…” !

!

Lesson 3: Through God Colored Glasses: “…God planned…”! A few years ago for Kadee and I’s first anniversary, we decided it would be a good idea to drive clear across the country to the Grand Canyon. We had heard of flying before, but for whatever reason decided it would be much more fun to drive 30 hours in the car together.! People told us we were committing marriage suicide…and that after that trip we would need some serious marriage counseling. 30 hours in a car…that’s nothing, we’ve lived together for a FULL year. The drive was crazy long and it took us 2 days to get there…we stopped along the way in Dallas, TX to see my aunt and uncle who live there…and thought it would be a good FREE place to stay. We were on a really tight budget for a 30 hour drive (the bulk of our cost would be in gas). ! Along the way, we stopped at some pretty cool places and got to see some really cool stuff. We stopped and had a giant steak from the Big Texan…we went to Dallas Cowboys Stadium and took a tour…we stopped at the Elvis Cadillac Graveyard (its basically what it sounds like…a bunch of Cadillacs buried in the ground)…we went to see a giant cross that we saw from the highway…and then we finally got to Arizona…the home of the Grand Canyon. But it was crazy late so we thought we would just go the next morning and see it. ! Kadee and I when we travel for our anniversary like to have one night where we stay at a really nice place…so we found the Grand Hotel! It looked so incredible in all the pictures…! So we got checked in our room, went upstairs after an extremely long journey and all we wanted to do was go straight to bed…we opened the door and the room was pretty much not there… and when I say not there, I mean, not there…the room was being renovated and there was a big hole in the wall…! So we went back downstairs and told the front desk…so they gave us a room right next door to the one we were in…that night in the room, we listened to what sounded like 2 rats having a boxing match…I had to get out of bed several times during the night to see if I could find the rats so I could protect Kadee from the man eating rats…! That night once we finally got to sleep…we received a phone call that woke us up…it was the front desk saying, “We are sorry to tell you this, but your debit card has been declined…” We knew we had money, but couldn't figure out what it was…our bank had put our card on fraud alert since we were traveling…the hotel wanted to kick us out in the middle of the night until we could figure out how to pay for the room…the only problem was, our bank was closed and they didn't have a 24 hour service…! So after a long night of fighting on the phone, we finally went back to sleep only to be woken up the next morning bright and early to the construction crew who was working on our first room. Let’s just say this…they didn’t get a good review from us on Orbitz. ! But the time had come for us to make the drive into the Grand Canyon National Park!! The moment we had been waiting for…I had been one time before when I was much much younger and let’s just say, when you are 6 years old the Grand Canyon isn't really that impressive. I

remember my first comment vividly… “It’s just a giant hole in the ground…let’s go home.” But this time was different. I remember driving up to it and being in awe of its beauty. God had created this…through his incredible artistic ability. ! Before we left on vacation I had bought for myself some really nice sunglasses…in fact they are the ones I still have today. I loved everything about them…accept the name of the lens color, AUBURN! I didn't really know what that meant. I didn't realize that it would change the way things looked around me…I didn’t know that it would make it easier to see in the rain…I didn't really know much about them at all…but when we got to the Canyon that evening Kadee and I decided that we were gonna watch the sunset behind the Canyon. We had heard about the different colors that you see in it…and heard how amazing it was to watch…and just how beautiful of a sunset it was. ! The whole time I am snapping pictures…marveling at the beauty…commenting on just how many colors I can see, and Kadee is giving me those looks like… “Yeah, this is cool…but you are making this out to be a way bigger deal than it is…” ! Then I realized something. She wasn't seeing the same thing I was…I was looking through my sunglasses and she was looking through hers…her lenses were just black, but I had Auburn lenses. If you have never watched a sunset through auburn lenses then you should, because it is absolutely spectacular!! ! I couldn't figure out for the life of me why I was the only completely stunned by the colors I was seeing. But I learned something that day…beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I was looking through colored glasses. Kadee was just looking through regular sunglasses. ! Lets go back to Ephesians 2:10 again. “YOU ARE HIS MASTERPIECE CREATED IN CHRIST JESUS FOR GOOD WORKS WHICH GOD PREPARED BEFOREHAND.”! The bible tells us that we are God planned…God prepared. ! I wanna share something with you tonight about how God views you. See God looks at you differently than anyone else…He sees you through a different kind of glasses than everybody else does. He looks through God colored glasses…what do God colored glasses look like?! Let’s read Colossians 3:12. ! I’m gonna some help real quick from someone…! “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly loved, compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience…”! Paul says, you are to be this (hold up shirt with compassion, kindness, etc.)! But we look at those things and say… “That’s just not me…that’s not who I am, I can’t be those things…I can’t live my life like that…easier said than done Paul.”!

So instead we put on a shirt that looks like this…! I am a worthless, loser, guilty, reject, failure!! And this is the shirt we put on because instead of viewing ourselves through God’s colored glasses (through His eyes). We see ourselves the way our enemy tells us we should look…and see ourselves. ! Someone once told me there are 2 important things about you: ! The second most important thing is what you think about God. Now that might seem odd, that it isn't number one.! The most important thing is what you think God thinks about when He thinks about you. Now let that sink in…because here is what the enemy is telling you. ! The enemy says…this is what God thinks about you. You are a worthless, loser, guilty, reject, failure…The enemy says, He knows what you did last week, he knows the movies you watched, he knows the internet sites you visited, he knows what you said and thought, he knows the jokes you told. ! Satan says, God knows all the bad stuff you are doing so this is how He views you…! But Paul says let me paint this a little more clearly…here is what God thinks about you:! 1. “Therefore as God’s CHOSEN ones…” You are CHOSEN. ! Even though we are all of those things that the enemy tells us we are…God says, “I still CHOSE YOU! I picked you once…and I will pick you a thousand times over, I chose you, YOU ARE MINE!”! Put on this shirt…CHOSEN! But wait, Andrew, I can still the other shirt…now I’m just a CHOSEN, WORTHLESS, LOSER, GUILTY, REJECT, FAILURE…! So Paul doesn't stop there…he says, not only are you chosen…! 2. You are HOLY.! The word Holy here literally means set apart. You are set apart by God. God chose you then he set you apart…! Some people think of the term “set apart” in this way [different, isolated, detached, secluded, alone]. This is a very negative connotation, and an accurate description of how most artists and creative individuals feel.!

!

Some people think of the term “set apart” in this way: [handpicked, with purpose, special]. This is a very positive connotation, and this is what we mean by the term “set apart,” and here’s why: God defined it that way. ! He says in Jeremiah 1:5 “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I set you apart.” ! God obviously put a lot of thought into creating people, even before they were born. Remember you are God prepared…God planned…!

!

But Andrew, I can still see the first shirt…now I am a HOLY, CHOSEN, WORTHLESS, LOSER, GUILTY, REJECT, FAILURE. ! These words begin to fade, but you are right…you can still those words if you pull on the shirt really tight.! So Paul continues…not only are you set apart, and chosen…! 3. You are DEARLY LOVED! ! God says, “I love you beyond compare and I will continue to love you beyond compare. You are dearly loved. ! But you always have that one kid who says…well, I can still see it…and if you pull it extremely tight and get really close, then you can see it…ever so slightly…! But there is one more shirt…you remember what Paul says we are to clothe ourselves with… COMPASSION, KINDNESS, HUMILITY, GENTLENESS AND PATIENCE. ! And we looked at that shirt and said, that’s not me…I can’t be that. Well, here is the beauty… once you realize that you are CHOSEN, HOLY, AND DEARLY LOVED then you can be clothed with these things. Because when you start to see yourself through God’s colored glasses… these things begin to flow out of you. You can’t help but be these things. ! As we close, I want you to remember this tonight…God doesn't see us in the same way that others see us…or how Our enemy sees us…God sees us through HIS colored glasses. And his glasses are beautiful. Just like looking at the Grand Canyon through Auburn lenses…God sees us as BEAUTIFUL! ! It is time to start seeing yourself as God sees you! Tonight, we are gonna sing an invitation song…and you have an opportunity to put on Christ as we talked about this morning…your most beautiful form will be the day that you put on Christ in baptism. ! Or maybe you have been seeing yourself the way that Satan tells you you should look or see yourself…and tonight, you wanna stop believing the lies that Satan is feeding you and you just need us to pray with you and for you. ! Remember this: God put His Son on a tree because YOU ARE WORTH IT, YOU MATTER!!

Lesson 4: Let Your Colors Show “…for good works…”! When I was in 3rd grade, I had a teacher named Mrs. Mordecai. She was as scary as her name sounds…! Mrs. Mordecai was the kind of teacher that every single student was afraid of…she was much bigger than all of us combined (there was a story that went around that she would eat the kids in her class that acted up), she had a thundering voice, a paddle the size of 2x4, and she had this really hairy mole. Mrs. Mordecai was not a lady you wanted to mess with…! So one day Mrs. Mordecai was handing back our test papers, and some of the students began to notice what appeared to be orange smudges all over our papers. We all wanted to ask what it was but being terrified none of us ever wanted to talk to her…so, Mrs. Mordecai finally gets my desk and hands me my paper…and there it was, plain as day…! A HUGE ORANGE, GREASY, STAIN ON MY TEST…So, I being the extremely bold 3rd grader I was…asked Mrs. Mordecai if she had been eating Cheetos while she graded our papers?! Her response was…you ready for this… “No, they were CHEESE PUFFS…” Bet you were expecting Mrs. Mordecai to eat me or something…! She had been eating CHEESE PUFFS and she was leaving fingerprints on everything that she touched…! Alright, I know you are probably wondering how in the world that ties to this lesson, but here it goes…! Christianity is a little bit like CHEETO or CHEESE PUFF Stains…have you ever noticed how hard it is to get the stains of cheetos off of your hands? ! I’m not sure what they make that cheese with…but it’s gotta be permanent cheese…it takes washing your hands at least twice…taking at least 3 showers…and then bathing in bleach to get those stains off…! How come God doesn't stick to us like that? Instead of God sticking to us and us leaving HIS fingerprints everywhere we go and on everything we touch…we sometimes leave God out of the situation, or out of our lives…! Maybe our lives should be filled with cheeto fingerprints…! Listen to Ephesians 2:10 again. One last time this weekend…! “For you are His masterpiece, created in Christ Jesus, FOR GOOD WORKS…”!

You were created in Christ…you are chosen, holy and loved…but you are all these things so that you can in turn do good.! You were created to do good. You were created in love for the purpose of love. ! Imagine if everywhere you went you kept that in your mind. I believe you would start leaving fingerprints everywhere you went…fingerprints of good, fingerprints of GOD. ! If everywhere you went you LET YOUR COLORS SHOW. ! If you know me well at all then you know how much I love the Olympics. Summer, winter olympics…if they had a fall or spring olympics I would love those too. ! There is just something about cheering for the good ole’ USofA…we are proud to be americans (and we sing about it, thank you Lee Greenwood). We are proud to fly our flag…and never let it touch the ground out of respect…we dub anything and everything #MERICA! ! Why? Because we are proud to be Americans! We aren’t afraid to let our true colors show…we aren’t afraid to let everybody know what team we cheer for in sports…why? Because we are proud to be an FSU Seminole (especially this year). ! Here is the point: We let our colors show in everything else we do…everywhere we go…no matter who we come in contact with…but THEN WE HIDE GOD IN CERTAIN SITUATION. When we are around certain groups of friends…when someone at school who isn't the popular kid needs someone to stand up for them…when the truth needs to be spoken…when someone is hurting…when someone is being neglected…! It is time for us to LET OUR COLORS SHOW:! BY BEING THE MASTERPIECE GOD CREATED US TO BE.! BY BECOMING THAT BEAUTIFUL FORM TO SEE IN CHRIST.! BY SEEING YOURSELF THE WAY GOD SEES YOU (CHOSEN, HOLY AND DEARLY LOVED).! BY SEEING OTHERS THE WAY GOD SEES THEM (CHOSEN, HOLY, DEARLY LOVED)! AND BY LEAVING YOUR FINGERPRINTS (THE FINGERPRINTS OF GOD) EVERYWHERE YOU GO. ! Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light shine before others so that they might see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.”! My prayer is that this weekend has helped you to see that YOU MATTER, YOU WERE CREATED ON PURPOSE, THAT GOD CHOSE YOU, SET YOU APART AND LOVES YOU, and THAT YOU WERE CREATED WITH A PURPOSE IN MIND. !

Small Group Time:!

! Feel free to add to this, take away from this, make it your own, or just follow it closely.!

! They say that you can tell a lot about a persons mood by what colors they are wearing. ! !

I’m not sure how accurate that is…but we do know from psychology that different colors affect our emotions…and that different emotions are represented by colors. !

! For example, red is a symbol of energy, war, danger, strength, power, anger, and love. ! ! Pink signifies love and friendship…it also represents femininity ! ! Brown suggests masculine (kind of like Andrew’s beard)! ! Let’s go through some different colors and talk about what you think each one represents. ! (Ask the students to describe each of these and then if they need help…help them)!

! How about Yellow? Sunshine, joy, happiness, excitement.! ! What do you think the color Orange represents?! !

What 2 colors make orange? Red (energy) and Yellow (happiness)…so orange represents GREAT JOY. !

! Green? What kind of things are green? Plants, flowers, etc. ! ! Green means growth, harmony, fresh…! ! Blue? Color of the sky and the sea. It is a color used a lot to represent cold. ! ! It symbolizes trust, loyalty, peace, tranquility…! ! White? purity, innocence, holy, good! ! Black and Grays? anger, depression, evil, darkness, loneliness, fear! ! Now think about these colors as they pertain to your faith. Have them answer this question: ! ! What color best describes where you are at in your faith right now? ! ! Have each student answer. Then talk about where each person is at. ! ! End with this verse…no matter where you are at in your faith remember…Philippians 1:6!

Have kids form four teams, and give each team one set of the above supplies. Blow up the balloons and scatter them in the playing area. Have each team duct-tape a pillow to the top of its skateboard and one glove to each side of its laundry basket. (Kids will slip their hands into the gloves and hold the baskets with the open end toward the floor, so they can scoop up balloons.) Each team begins in a different corner of the room and chooses a different color of balloon to go after.

Each team will have someone lie belly-down on the skateboard with hands inside the laundry

basket’s gloves. Each team will tie a rope around its “skateboarder’s” ankles. When you blow the whistle, teams will shove their skateboarder teammates out into the playing area and pull them back and forth with the rope. The skateboarders have two minutes to capture as many of their balloons as possible, with their laundry baskets. Then have other teammates exchange places with the skateboarders. The team with the most balloons wins.!

! Paint Slip-n-Slide! !

Have all your students wear a white t-shirt with a shirt underneath it. We told them to all wear goggles and old clothes they didn't mind ruining. We laid out a tarp that was about 75 feet long with a white sheet at the end of the tarp with the words “HIS MASTERPIECE” taped off on the sheet (we used white duct tape). We put paint all over the tarp for the students to slide down. We actually didn't have enough paint for ours though so the students ended up rolling down it for the most part. Rule of thumb when you think you have enough DOUBLE IT! We used cheap NON-TOXIC WASHABLE PAINT so that it wouldn't hurt anything (our students or the grass). !

!

We used a roll of plastic that we bought from Wal-Mart. ! LOTS of Cheap NON TOXIC WASHBALE PAINT! Garden Staples!
