‫)‪On the Application of Hierarchical (Mixed‬‬ ‫‪Models in Behavioral Science Research‬‬ ‫פרופסור אילה כהן‪ ,‬הטכניון‬ ‫‪Multilevel data are pervasive in the social sciences. Workers may be nested within teams, students‬‬ ‫‪within classes, firms within countries. Statistical methods that take into account hierarchically structured‬‬ ‫‪data have gained popularity in recent years, and there now exist several special-purpose statistical‬‬ ‫‪programs designed for estimating multilevel models (e.g. HLM). The increasing use of multilevel‬‬ ‫‪models, (also known as hierarchical linear and mixed effects models) has led packages such as SPSS,‬‬ ‫‪SAS, and R to introduce their own procedures for handling nested data. Notation for these models is‬‬ ‫‪often inconsistent across disciplines.‬‬ ‫‪The purpose of this talk is to clarify the vocabulary and notation of multilevel models and to explain in‬‬ ‫‪what way they account for the non-independence in nested data.‬‬ ‫‪An example of two levels data will be used to show how to interpret, and how to present computer‬‬ ‫‪output results.‬‬

‫אילה כהן קיבלה את ה‪ .Ph.D-‬בסטטיסטיקה באוניברסיטת ‪ ,Johns Hopkins‬ב‪ 1976-‬לאחר מכן הייתה במשך שנה‬ ‫וחצי בסגל מעבדות בל‪ .‬בתקופה זו‪ ,‬מעבדות בל היו אחד ממרכזי המחקר הטובים ביותר בתחומים שונים‪ .‬שם היא‬ ‫התוודעה לראשונה לאפשרויות הרבות והמשמעותיות של סטטיסטיקה יישומית‪ .‬לאחר ניסיונה זה הצטרפה כמרצה‬ ‫לסגל הפקולטה להנדסת תעשייה וניהול בטכניון ושם הייתה חברת סגל עד לפרישה מבחינה פורמאלית ב‪ .2009-‬למרות‬ ‫פרישתה הרשמית היא ממשיכה בפעילות המחקרית וגם בהוראה של קורסים לתלמידי תארים גבוהים במדעי ההתנהגות‪.‬‬ ‫ב‪ 1986-‬היא ופרופסור פייגין הקימו את המעבדה לסטטיסטיקה בטכניון ומאז היא עומדת בראש המעבדה‪ .‬כראש‬ ‫המעבדה היא ביצעה וממשיכה לבצע פרויקטים עם צוות המעבדה‪.‬‬ ‫פעילות המעבדה היא בשיתוף פעולה עם חוקרים בשלושה תחומים עיקריים‪ :‬מדעי ההתנהגות‪ ,‬רפואה ותחבורה‪.‬‬ ‫יש לה למעלה ממאה פרסומים מדעיים בעיתונות המקצועית‪ ,‬חלקם בירחונים סטטיסטים של פיתוח מתודולוגיות וחלקם‬ ‫הגדול מאמרים יישומיים בשיתוף עם חוקרים מתחומים שונים‬
