Little House Block Designed by Heather Jones www.oliveandollie.com Please be sure to read all of the instructions before getting started. All seam allowances are ¼”. Choose a total of five different fabrics for the block: one for the door, one for the house, one for the roof, one for the grass, and one for the background. I used a variety of prints and solids. This block is a great stash buster!

Designed by Heather Jones www.oliveandollie.com Construct the Block: 1. Place Piece B on top of Piece C, right sides together. Sew, making sure to backstitch at the beginning and end of the seam to lock the stitches together. Press seam open with a hot iron. 2. Place one Piece D on top of the pieced section, following the diagram, right sides together and secure with pins. Sew, making sure to lock the stitches at the beginning and end of the seam. Press seam open with a hot iron, and repeat with the other D Piece. 3. Following the diagram, place one E Piece on top of the pieced section, right sides together, and pin. Sew them together, making sure to lock the stitches of the seam. Press seam open, and repeat with the other E Piece. 4. In steps 4-7, we’ll be making a flying geese block, using Piece F and the two G Pieces, for the roof. Using a pencil or water-soluble marker and a straight edge, draw a diagonal line down the center of each G Piece, from corner to corner. 5. Place one G Piece on top of Piece F, with the pencil line facing up and, with one end of the drawn line towards the lower left side of Piece F, and the other end of the drawn line towards the center of Piece F. Pin Piece G in place. Sew a seam directly on the drawn line, again locking the stitches at the beginning and end of the seam. 6. Place the edge of a ruler ¼” from the seam. Using a rotary cutter, cut off the excess fabric along that line to create a ¼” seam allowance. Gently open the seam and press with a hot iron. 7. Place the other G Piece on top of the pieced section, right sides together, with the drawn line facing up. Make sure that one end of the drawn line is towards the center of the pieced block, and the other end of the line is toward the lower right side of the pieced block. Pin Piece G in place and sew along the drawn line, locking the stitches at the beginning and ending of the seam. Place the edge of a ruler 1/4” from the seam and remove excess fabric with a rotary cutter. Gently open the seam and press with a hot iron. 8. Following the diagram, place one H on top of the pieced roof, right sides together and pin. Sew, making sure to lock the stitches at the beginning and end of the seam. Press seam open with a hot iron, and repeat with the other H Piece. 9. Now that all of the pieced sections have been constructed, sew the block together, row by row, following the layout diagram. Place piece A on the house section of the block, right sides together, and pin in place. Sew together, making sure to lock the stitches at the beginning and end of the seam. Press seams open with a hot iron. 10. Place the roof section on top of the house section, right sides together, pin in place and sew. Press seam open with a hot iron. 11. Place Piece I on the pieced block, right sides together, and pin in place. Sew Piece I to the pieced section, making sure to lock the stitches at the beginning and end of the seam. Press seam open with a hot iron. Congratulations! Your house block is finished! Square up your block with a rotary cutter and straight edge if needed.
