1. Barcelona is a dynamic, lively city, which is full of social diversity due to a history which has given it a great cultural richness which in turn makes it unique. Barcelona is a Mediterranean city, with a mild and pleasant climate all year long, with a great cultural and artistic heritage and its people are respectful and welcoming.  Geography and demography Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia. It is located in the northeast of Spain, a short distance from France and the Pyrenees. The city has a population of 1,700,000 inhabitants, making it the most populated city in Spain after Madrid. The Barcelona metropolitan area consists of 36 municipalities with a total population of 3,300,000 inhabitants.  Language In Barcelona there are two official languages, Spanish and Catalan.  Currency As in Spain and most of Europe, the official currency of Barcelona is the Euro (€).  Electricity and plugs Outlets in Barcelona are European style, feature two round exits and a voltage of 220V.  Some tips On the basis of the experiences of former students who have come to spend an unforgettable year in this city, we encourage you not to leave certain key tasks for the last minute: Get a head start in your search for housing (e.g. a shared flat, a studio, or a room in a university residence). A good time to start is right before summer. In Spain, the health care system is public. If you are a resident of the European Union, you can have a health card made in your home country. Otherwise, you can take out a private health insurance policy. If you come from outside of the European Union, you will need a student visa  Once you arrive in Barcelona... Barcelona offers a wide variety of attractive features, making it a fascinating city in which to live. You will find all sorts of cultural activities: concerts, plays, museums, etc. You can get more information at the city's tourism offices. The climate in Barcelona is purely Mediterranean. For more information, contact the Catalan Weather Service (Servei Català de Meteorologia).  Getting around... In addition to using a car or motor scooter, you can get around Barcelona on the metro, the city buses, the tram or the FGC trains by public transport. You can buy vouchers for multiple trips at all public transport stations and at some newsstands. You can also sign up for Barcelona's Bicing service, which allows you to use city-owned bicycles to get around.

4. Health Insurance We would like to inform you that, as agreed by the governing body of our university, any student which is being sent to our university is obliged to come with the following insurances: Medical insurance (either Social Security or other) and an Additional insurance that should cover the following: 1) Accidents. 2) Medical, surgical, pharmaceutical hospitalization and ambulance expenses. 3) Repatriation or medical transport in case of injury or illness. 4) Repatriation or transport of the deceased.

8

5) 6) 7) 8) 9) 10) 11) 12)

Travel with a companion and expenses of his/her stay in case of hospitalization. Return of the insured person by death of a non-assured relative. Urgent shipment of non-existing medicines abroad. Transmission of messages. Assistance in the searching and shipping of lost luggage. Travel assistance. Shipment of forgotten objects difficult to be replaced. Civil liability.

All students must have health cover and insurance as follows: I. EU Students Citizens of the European Union or the European Economic Area or Switzerland who are entitled to coverage under the social security system of their country must get a European Health Insurance Card before travelling to Spain. This card can be obtained from the public health authorities of the student’s country of origin and it will give them the necessary health insurance in Spain. However, this card does cover neither accidents nor any private health costs. Therefore, please note that the European Health Insurance Card is not an alternative to travel/accident Insurance, which all international students, are required to have too. The European Health Insurance Card can be of considerable benefit to you should you require medical assistance during your stay in Barcelona. A photocopy of your EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) or Private Medical Insurance Certificate must accompany your completed Application Form.

What are the practical benefits of the card? The card ensures that you will get the same access to public sector health care (eg a doctor, a pharmacy, a hospital or a health care centre) as nationals of the country you are visiting. If you have to receive medical attention in a country that charges for health care, you will be reimbursed either immediately, or after you go home to your own country. The idea is that you are given the care you need to allow you to continue with your stay. However, it is important to note that the card does not cover your health care costs while abroad if you are travelling in order to obtain treatment for an illness or injury that you had before travelling. Nor does the card cover you for private sector health care providers. II. Non-EU Students Non-EU Citizens must take out private health insurance in Spain to cover the duration of their stay. There are some countries with a mutual health provision agreement between their healthcare systems and the Spanish Social Security. These students are strongly recommended to find out about such agreement with their home country. If it exists, they should obtain the necessary documents from the relevant authorities in their country of origin. Students who do not fall into any of the above categories or cannot give proof of the document issued by the relevant authorities in their home country, must take out private medical insurance prior to their departure.

9

If you are non-EU student, you must obtain private medical insurance before travelling to Spain. IMPORTANT: HTSI offers to exchange students an insurance by paying 32€ per semester. Please click on the following link if you are interested in buying the insurance. HTSI INSURANCE (Ramon Llull University). Please select that you are a Ramon Llull University student.

5. Travel & Arrival information Students who do not come from the European Union should arrange a visa for students before joining HTSI. It is not recommended that the students travel on a tourist visa. Once in Spain, it is NOT possible to process a student visa, and the student must return to their countries of origin for their visa. Normally, visa formalities begin with the acceptance letter received electronically, pending receipt of the original documentation for verification. VISA Support: Any student requiring a VISA, please mail to the international department.

6. Cost of Living The cost of living in Barcelona is similar to that of other European cities. It is cheaper than Paris, London or other cities in northern Europe, but more expensive than cities such as Lisbon and Athens. The cost of living here is roughly similar to the cost of living in Rome. Monthly outgoings vary between €500 and 700€, depending mainly on the type of accommodation chosen. You will require cash in the first few days, mainly to pay accommodation costs, travel cards, etc.

7. Look after your belongings Barcelona is a safe city; nevertheless, you should always be on the alert for pickpockets who take advantage of distracted students and travelers. The following tips will help you to prevent theft: 

If you’ve chosen a medium / long stay and you have an expensive phone, you have to be REALLY careful with it, especially in crowded places such as the metro, concerts and events in general.

When traveling by subway, you should always have your purse in front of you and closed.

If you are carrying a laptop case, please don’t leave it on the floor. It would be safer to carry it on your chest instead of your back, so you can see it all the time.

When getting on the metro, if you feel people are pushing you, look after your pockets / purse.

If you are on the beach and you want to go in the water, leave your belongings with a friend.

If you are in a nightclub, it is not recommended to leave your belongings on a couch/sofa etc.

TIPS: If you lose something on the subway or on the bus, or you want to register a complaint, you can contact the TMB customer service. The offices are located in the following metro stations: Diagonal, Universitat, Sants Estacio, Sagrada Familia and Sagrera.

Carry a little extra cash with you for the first few days of your stay, in case you need to deal with unexpected problems. 12. From the Airport to Barcelona I. Aerobus Express Bus Service: Express bus service to Barcelona city center from the airport Tel: +34 90 210 0104 The Aerobus service is an express bus service that links Barcelona airport to the city center. This service normally runs between 6 and 15 minutes within its fixed hours of operation (see official website below for the exact timetable for the Aerobus). You can catch the Aerobus from outside both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. The Aerobus will then take you to the city centre where you can alight either at Plaça Espanya or Plaça de Catalunya (there are other stops, but we recommend you refer to the official Aerobus website - link given below). From there you can catch the metro underground. See our page on the Barcelona Metro map. -

Tickets to both T1 and T2 cost €5.90 for a single and €10.20 for a return (return ticket valid for 9 days). Timetable for the Aerobus Operating hours of the Aerobus to T1 Operating hours for Aerobus to T2 Visit our in-depth information page on the Barcelona airport Aerobus service

TIP: It is important to remember that both Aerobuses for Terminal 1 and for Terminal 2 stops at the same bus stops in the city center. If you are making your way to Barcelona Airport, make sure that you take the right Aerobus. Both buses look the same, however the bus to T1 is the A1 and the bus to T2 is the A2. II. TMB Barcelona Airport Bus Transfer: Bus from City Centre to Airport in Barcelona Many visitors to Barcelona think that the Aerobus (Express airport bus service) is the only bus option from Barcelona Airport to the city center. However, the metropolitan transport of Barcelona (TMB) also runs buses during the day from both Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2). During the night the N17 / N16 Airport Night buses operate from T1 and T2 respectively. The advantage of the Aerobus is that it runs on a more regular basis, offers more luggage space and stops at fewer places on the way into Barcelona therefore reducing transfer times to and from the airport. However, the cost of the journey on the TMB buses is considerably cheaper than the Aerobus - a single journey costs €2.15, compared to €5.90 on the Aerobus from T2 and T1. Alternatively, you could buy the Barcelona Transport Card mentioned below which you can use on the TMB airport bus. It will also cover you for most of your city center transport costs during your visit. TIP: Another advantage of taking the TMB bus to transfer to the city center is that you can use the T10 travel card for this bus service - unlike the Aerobus service where you cannot use the T10. See our detailed information page on T10 Travel Card to find out more about this card. Barcelona Card

14

The Barcelona Card will give you unlimited travel on the Barcelona Metro, FGC, TMB buses, the main tram and the RENFE train to and from Barcelona Airport (El Prat de Llobregat). You can also use it on the TMB bus from Barcelona center to Barcelona Airport however, it cannot be used on the Aerobus (the express bus service to the airport). III.
