Epic Day Course Descriptions Epic Adventure

This course begins our day of “epic adventure” with a character lesson. Students and teacher review a character trait to foster a positive classroom environment. Next, the class studies a period of history, this year, American History. Through stories, crafts, building projects and discussions students learn about their country’s past. We will also cover each state in the United States of America! Science

Curiosity. Enthusiasm. Encouragement. The perfect ingredients for a great learning experience. Science class engages students in learning about the world around them, while covering all the required standards. Through hands on activities and experiments, science pages, and reading students will cover grade level topics ranging from biomes to animals to chemical change and simple machines. In the spring, all grade levels will work on science fair projects to display.

Writing

In this leveled course, all students will have the opportunity to discover the fun of writing starting right at their individual ability levels. In the younger classes, students will participate in whole group teacher instruction and activities. Every other week, the younger students will participate in rotating, small group, writing centers. These centers will cater to various learning modalities. All learners, whether they are visual, kinesthetic, auditory, or read-write, will enjoy learning through centers. In the older classes, the kids will participate in a writer’s workshop type setting. They will receive fun, creative, informative mini-lessons at the beginning of each class followed by teacher directed writing time. They will work on understanding the writing process by creating and refining their own writing pieces over time. They will work collaboratively as a class to help each other improve through idea-sharing, editing and proofreading.

Epic Day Course Descriptions 2-D and 3-D Art

This class will focus on the skills all art students need,. whether they will grow to be art creators or art appreciators. Students will focus on creating art through use of the principles and elements of design and identifying design elements in the works of great artists. They will work with materials such as paper, pastels, paints, clay, and fibers to create fun projects while learning the language of art.

Animal Encounters

Each week in Animal Encounters we will talk about a different habitat/biome. We will discuss the characteristics that make up the biome such as the floura and fauna, weather, temperatures, and geography. We will discuss the relationships between the animals that call the biome home, food chains, and animal adaptations. We will point out on world and local maps where each of these habitats/biomes can be found. With each biome we will discuss the students will make a wall mural STEM Science, Technology, Engineering, Math showing the plants and animals that live there.
