Epic Day Course Descriptions Epic Adventure
This course begins our day of “epic adventure” with a character lesson. Students and teacher review a character trait to foster a positive classroom environment. Next, the class studies a period of history, this year, American History. Through stories, crafts, building projects and discussions students learn about their country’s past. We will also cover each state in the United States of America! Science
Curiosity. Enthusiasm. Encouragement. The perfect ingredients for a great learning experience. Science class engages students in learning about the world around them, while covering all the required standards. Through hands on activities and experiments, science pages, and reading students will cover grade level topics ranging from biomes to animals to chemical change and simple machines. In the spring, all grade levels will work on science fair projects to display.
Writing
In this leveled course, all students will have the opportunity to discover the fun of writing starting right at their individual ability levels. In the younger classes, students will participate in whole group teacher instruction and activities. Every other week, the younger students will participate in rotating, small group, writing centers. These centers will cater to various learning modalities. All learners, whether they are visual, kinesthetic, auditory, or read-write, will enjoy learning through centers. In the older classes, the kids will participate in a writer’s workshop type setting. They will receive fun, creative, informative mini-lessons at the beginning of each class followed by teacher directed writing time. They will work on understanding the writing process by creating and refining their own writing pieces over time. They will work collaboratively as a class to help each other improve through idea-sharing, editing and proofreading.
Epic Day Course Descriptions 2-D and 3-D Art

Each week in Animal Encounters we will talk about a different habitat/biome. We will discuss the characteristics that make up the biome such as the floura and fauna, weather, temperatures, and geography. We will discuss the relationships between the animals that call the biome home, food chains, and animal adaptations. We will point out on world and local maps where each of these habitats/biomes can be found. With each biome we will discuss the students will make a wall mural STEM Science, Technology, Engineering, Math showing the plants and animals that live there. We will end with a final project, students will choose Children love doing. They are naturally curious to make a diorama, write a report on a habitat or about why and how things work. They love planning, creating, building and making. This class animal, make a poster, or make an original piece is about capitalizing on that interest and teaching of art showing what they have learned. children to become innovative thinkers. In STEM, students construct projects based on real world Of course, we will try to "encounter" actual animals as much possible. We will be working with problems. In doing so, they learn to analyze, our local Willow Zoo to make that happen! question, elaborate, refine, and evaluate their own ideas - all while building cool stuff! Ooey Gooey Explosive Science
Discovery Learning
This class is about discovering to learn through Ooey Gooey Science is the time to experiment play, through reading, through games, through with slimy, gooey, explosive things. We will get cooperative projects with friends. dirty as we explore polymers, chemical reactions, Younger students will work on team building and viscosity, and much more.
