NATIONAL LEVEL PAPER PRESENTATION ON
DEMONETISATION : PROSPECTS & PROBLEMS ON th Friday, 10 February 2017
ABOUT THE SEMINAR: The demonitisation of ₹500 and ₹1,000 Indian currency notes was a policy decision taken by Government of India on 8th November 2016, thus ceasing it to be a legal tender from 9th November 2016. Government claimed that Demonetisation was an effort to stop counterfeiting of the current notes allegedly used for funding terrorism, as well as a crackdown on black money in the country. The move was described as an effort to reduce corruption, the use of drugs and smuggling. However, in the days following the demonetisation, banks and ATMs across the country faced severe cash shortages. The cash shortages had detrimental effects on a number of small businesses, agriculture and transportation, while people seeking to exchange their notes had lengthy waits, and a few deaths were linked to the rush to exchange cash. The demonetisation received support from several bankers as well as from some international commentators, although it was criticised by members of the opposition parties and others. Keeping in mind the pros and cons of demonetization and its impact on different sectors of the Indian Economy, Lords Universal College thought it to be proper to have a National Level Paper Presentation on ”DEMONITISATION: PROSPECTS AND PROBLEMS ”
OBJECTIVES OF THE SEMINAR: The main objective of the seminar is to study the short and long term wider impact of demonetisation on common man, economy, industry, agriculture, foreign trade and politics. An in-depth study is required to understand the benefits and backlash of demonetisation.
