She was to be operated, but as she was weak the doctors postponed surgery until she recovered some strength. Vallabhbhai went to Anand where a client, accused of murder was being tried. Before he left for Anand he instructed doctors to summon him immediately the date on which the operation is fixed. But Zaverbai’s condition worsened as soon as he left and doctors resumed to surgery which was unavoidable. She died on January 11, 1909 after the operation. The news of the bereavement reached Vallabhbhai Patel, when he was cross-examining a witness in the murder case. He saw the telegram which announced his beloved wife’s death, folded it and put it in his pocket. He continued his cross-examination and ultimately won in the battle in the court room. He did not show his grief when he heard the news. To a question put by one of his colleagues Vallabhbhai replied “She was already dead. What was there to go ?” He was so calm and firm.
