Lunch & Learn FAQs Lunch Questions 1) When do I go eat lunch? ● Students with no required activity may eat from 11:35-12:05 in the cafeteria. ● Students that have a Learn/activity will eat from 12:05-12:35 in the cafeteria. 2) Where can I eat? ● You may eat in the cafeteria and on the patio area only. Students are not permitted to move the picnic tables. Be sure to clean your area. Food is not allowed in classrooms, gyms, computer labs, hallways, etc. 3) How many lines are in the cafeteria? ● Three lines. Two lines serve regular lunch items. One line serves made-to-order wraps and sandwiches. Signage will indicate which lines are serving certain items. Line items are subject to change. 4) Can I bring food from home? ● Absolutely. Feel free to bring a packed lunch from home. Food brought in from outside vendors/restaurants is not allowed. 5) Can I move from table to table in the cafeteria? ● Students are expected to come into the cafeteria and either go to a lunch line or sit at a table with friends,. Students are not permitted to move from table to table during lunch or loiter in the cafeteria. 6) Can I go to the restroom after entering the cafeteria? ● Yes, you may use the restrooms located directly across from the cafeteria entrance doors at any time during lunch.
Learn Questions 7) What is the daily schedule for Learn classes? ● Monday - 1st period ● Tuesday - 2nd period ● Wednesday - Advisory/Homeroom (On short weeks, we will eliminate the Advisory/Homeroom day.) ● Thursday - 3rd period ● Friday - 4th period 8) How do I know which days of the week I can go to certain teachers for Learn? ● Your teachers will post the days of the week that they are open outside of their door and we will announce each morning which classes are open for Learn. Therefore, you have no excuse to not know where you can go during Lunch & Learn. It is important that you plan out your L&L time in the morning so you can take advantage of these opportunities. 9) How are grades tied into Lunch & Learn? ● During the first 2 weeks of the fall semester, each student is required to go to homeroom/advisory on a daily basis. At the conclusion of the 2nd week, grades will determine if they are required to go to Learn. Students with a 75 or lower must stay for Learn in that particular class for 3 weeks. Every 3 weeks students’ grades are evaluated to determine if they are required to continue attending Learn sessions. Students who have a ‘76 or higher’ after each 3 week period are not required to go to Learn for the classes in which they have earned that grade. ’76 and higher’ students can choose from all of the other activity areas L/L has to offer. 10) Can I be required to attend Learn even if my grade is higher than 75? ● Yes. Some teachers require the entire class or individuals to stay for academic reasons and to complete make-up work/tests.
11) How does attendance work for being in Learn? ● You are required to sign in at each Learn you attend. In order be counted present for being in your Learn, you must be in Learn for its duration. 12) What happens if I don’t go to my required Learn? ● It will be treated as though you are skipping a regular class. 13) What if I need to be picked up by my parents for an appointment during Lunch and Learn? ● We discourage any appointments during Lunch and Learn because this is such a vital part of your school day. If you must schedule an appointment during Lunch and Learn, it is your responsibility to communicate to your parents where you will be on the day that you are to be picked up. If you do not communicate this with you parents, they may be required to wait until Lunch & Learn is over before you are located. No intercom announcements will be made from 11:35-12:35.
Activity Options 14) Where may I go during the 30 minutes I am not in the cafeteria? ● You have lots of flexibility and independence if you have a 76 or higher in your classes. Areas that are open during Lunch & Learn include the Media Center, Distance Learning Lab 332, Computer Lab 308, Patio, the Auxiliary and Main gyms, and cafeteria/patio. In addition, teacher classrooms are open on certain days of the week as designated by the Lunch and Learn departmental schedule. Also, club advisors will have announced club meetings during the week. 15) May I change activities any time between 11:30 and 12:30 if I have a 76 or higher? ● No. You may select up to two locations per day. Go to your first location at 11:35 and go to your second location at 12:05. Once you select you location, you are required to remain there until the bell rings at the end of the 30 minute time frame. 16) What are the expectations for each of these Lunch & Learn activity areas? ● Media Center - (Max of 40 students) Feel free to do research, work on papers, study in groups, read for enjoyment, work on homework with partners, collaborate on different projects, etc. in a conversational voice. Mr. Rhodes and Ms. West will have more specific expectations than these which they will share during the first few weeks of school when students visit the Media Center during L&L. ● Distance Learning Lab Room 332 - (Max of 20 students) Focus on College & Career Planning. Ms.Martinez will lead discussions on college applications, FAFSA, scholarships, and other related topics. This time will create a great opportunity for students to explore websites, apply to colleges, and receive some advice on how to go the next level. ● Computer Lab 308 (Max of 25 students) - Feel free to come in and work on projects, write papers, access Study Island or Moodle, work on NCVPS classes or Credit Recovery classes, do research on assignments or research colleges and universities, and collaborate with other students. Students are subject to the Internet Agreement Policy while in these labs. ● Auxiliary and Main Gyms - Students have opportunities to participate in different athletic activities that are supervised by the PE coaches. If students enter the gyms, they are expected to participate in the activities. Proper footwear needs to be worn to participate. ● Art and Band Room - Available on selected days for students to complete projects and work on activities supervised by Ms. Hamlin and Ms. Wrye. ● Clubs - Will be announced and/or posted 17) Can I walk around the school during Lunch & Learn? ● No. Students must be in a supervised activity area or cafeteria during Lunch and Learn. Hall walking is not an option. The auxiliary gym will permit students to walk around. At the conclusion of the Learn period, there will be 5 minutes to transition to a different areas.
