Looking In, Looking Out! submitted by Olivia M. Evans, J&C freshman We’ve all been there. Looking in. Wishing. Now we are there. Looking out. Receiving. This was my thought the first day of school. When I stepped in those doors for the first time it’s like I was transformed. Everybody was so welcoming. The teachers were very kind, it was better than I ever could’ve expected. Even in week two of school I’m still loving every moment about being a Manual Crimson. I don’t know what my future holds but I at least know I have a good foundation to build it off of and the rest is up to me. Now I just have to jump a little and grab it. I understand that it’ll be challenging, the work will be hard, and there will be many nights where I wonder was this the right choice? I’m ready and I believe everyone else is right there with me ready to ride off to war. Just knowing the history and tradition of this school, I couldn’t help but feel so much pride. I know that some of the best and worst times are yet to come and, it’s so close I can taste it. Now, it’s time to eat! We are duPont Manual! Manual Wrestling Team Looking for New Wrestlers submitted by Shannon Harris, Manual Wrestling Booster President Are you or someone you know interested in joining the wrestling team? The wrestling team is recruiting new wrestlers, experienced or not! You are invited to attend a parent/wrestler meeting on Tuesday, September 2 in the Freshman Cafeteria at 5:30. During this meeting the boosters will talk about spirit wear, fundraising and ways to support the team. Our new head coach, Coach Wolfe, will discuss expectations, schedules and his plans for this season. We are looking forward to seeing returning wrestlers and welcoming new ones! J&C Ice Cream Social submitted by Peggy Loy J&C will hold their annual ice cream social on Wednesday, September 3rd at 7:00 pm in the Freshmen cafeteria. This is the perfect opportunity to connect with other J&C parents and a chance to hear about the latest news from J&C. Additionally, the teachers will share their plans for the upcoming year. The Publishers, the J&C parent group that supports J&C, will be there to answer questions and encourage membership. We hope to see you there!

Manual PTSA Makes a Difference at CAP submitted by Jill Jelsma, PTSA CAP Co-Chair Last Wednesday, Manual PTSA volunteers Gretchen Davis, Becky Mosley, Kitty Zink, Sarah Chandler, JoAnne Taheri, Jill Lauroesch, Julie Robinson, Penny DeVenuto, and Jill Jelsma worked at the JCPS Clothing Assistance Program (CAP). The Manual parents sized, tagged and hung gently-used clothing in their designated places, so that the JCPS families could easily find the items they needed to attend school or work. Other volunteers helped to distribute the correct sizes of uniforms. Each eligible student receives one new uniform conforming to their school's dress code; this includes one polo, one pair of pants, one belt, 5 pairs of socks, and 5 pairs of underwear. CAP is always in need of volunteers to help on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. At this time, they are also in particular need of gently-used school-age uniforms, school-age clothing and boys' shoes. For large donations, please call the volunteerin-charge of CAP, Barbara Fischer, a former PTSA President at Manual, at (502) 485-7062 to make sure the CAP building is open. CAP is located behind Central High School Stadium, 319 S. 15th Street, 40203. You can leave smaller donations in the PTSA bin at Manual's main entrance. If you would like to help on Manual's next volunteer day, January 14, 2015, please contact Jill Jelsma, Manual's CAP co-chair, [email protected] or look for the sign-up genius link in our newsletter in December. Communications and Camaraderie PTA Reflections Program submitted by Penny DeVenuto The National PTA Reflections Program encourages students to explore and be involved in the arts. Across the United States, thousands of students reflect on a theme and create original works of art in the categories of dance choreography, film production, music composition, literature, photography and visual arts. The theme for the 2014-2015 school year is: 'The world would be a better place if...' This arts competition recognizes students at the school, district, state and national level. Please encourage your students to enter their own art piece and represent DuPont Manual High School in this national art contest. Manual will be hosting a Science Fair Open House on Thursday, September 4 in the Manual auditorium from 7pm-8pm. See what a science fair board looks like, learn about the timeline of project progression, find out why the science fair process is valuable for your child, and much more!

The Science Bowl Team will hold tryouts on Tuesday, September 2 from 2:30-4:00 in Mr. Albright’s room (room 320). Science Bowl is a national academic competition that features astronomy, mathematics, biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics. All grades welcome!

1st Annual Boy’s Basketball Golf Scramble: Sponsors Needed submitted by Steve Chilton The Boys’ basketball team needs teams and hole sponsors for the 1st Annual Boys Basketball Golf Scramble. The scramble will be held on September 21st at Quail Chase Golf Course. Registration begins at 11am and the Shotgun Start is at 1:00 pm. All proceeds go directly to the Boys Basketball Booster Club to assist with their immediate funding needs. The cost of the team entry fee includes green fees, cart, and a catered dinner to be served after the round. Great prizes will be offered to the winning team, closest to hole winner, and longest drive winner. Golf experience or ability is in no way necessary to come out and have a good time at this event. There will be many other games offered throughout the day, and there will be a raffle conducted during dinner where you can win very nice prizes including UK vs UL basketball and football tickets! The entry fee for a team is $300. Hole Sponsorships are $100. If your family or business would like to sponsor a hole, you will receive a 17'' x 24'' sign with your choice of logo and text displayed. These signs will be placed on the tee boxes throughout the course during play. If you can sponsor a hole and provide a team, there is a $25 savings on the entry fee for the golf team entry. Please come out and show your support for the team and enjoy a fun day of golf! Sign up your team, and confirm your hole sponsorship now by sending an email to [email protected]. Caring for Our Community Basketball Stadium Chair Fundraiser

The Manual Boys Basketball Boosters are once again selling stadium chairs. They are black canvas with a red “M” on the back. If you spend time at sporting events, you will love these chairs! Cost is $60 per chair. Call or text Jenny Janes at 767-2248 or email [email protected] to order.

A PTSA member saw in last week’s Post that “The caretaker’s house at Manual Stadium is in need of a Window Air-Conditioning Unit. This area is used to host alumni events and occasional receptions during our athletic contests.” Wanting to remain anonymous, the member contacted the PTSA and said that if 5 alumni who were not already members of the PTSA joined by September 20, 2014, he would donate a brand new window unit. Alumni, let’s make that happen! You can join online or in the Manual front office. Memberships are $10.00 each. Please add “Alumnus, Class of ____” after your name on the membership form. We are Stronger Together!

Manual Community Closet Wish List submitted by Mrs. Pinky Jackson, PTSA President The Manual Community Closet (MCC), is a resource for our students in need. While you are shopping for school supplies, spirit wear, or after school snacks, please consider picking up extra items for Manual students who could use some extra support.  Unisex sweat pants in all sizes, and with elastic waist bands  School supplies (pens, pencils, paper, notebooks, index cards, dividers, etc.)  Non-perishable after school snacks and drinks  TARC bus passes so students can stay for after school activities and tutoring  Manual and YPAS Spirit Wear, which you can purchase from the bookstore, various groups on campus, or online at this link  Donations can be dropped off in the main office.
