Knowing Jesus Christ
The Seven Last Words By:Fulton Sheen
March 20th Topic - The Humanity of Jesus Come to hear how Jesus is one of us !
Please join Maria Blewitt and Rosemarie DeLacy for three meetings this Lent to discuss Bishop Sheen’s book, The Seven Last Words. The book is available on amazon.com as either a Kindle book or a paperback. We will reflect upon and talk about the first and second words on March 14, the third and fourth words on March 28, and the fifth, sixth and seventh words on April 11. The book is short, so the expected reading preparation time should be manageable. Dates: Tuesdays, March 14, March 28 and April 11 When: 7:00-8:00 pm Where: Parish Center Questions? Please call Maria Blewitt at: (617) 640-0458. Want to let us know you’re coming? Please call the Parish Office at (781) 944-0330.
Because Jesus is God the Son, we believe that He makes it possible for us to live a different life than the world offers. Join Fr. Colarusso to learn more deeply the Catholic Church’s teachings about our Lord. Mondays, 7:00 - 8:30pm, Parish Center
CRS Rice Bowl Campaign On all Wednesdays of Lent from 6:30-8:00pm, all parishes of the Archdiocese of Boston will be open for Confession. The Archdiocese has set up a site, www.TheLightIsOnForYou.org, to help you prepare. It has info on the Sacrament of Reconciliation, on how to make a good Confession, answers to frequently-asked questions and more. Please plan to come on Lenten Wednesdays and spread the word of this outreach of mercy to those you know.
ENCOUNTER NUTRITION We encounter Evelina in Zambia as she and other mothers in her community learn new ways to provide nutritious meals for their growing children and families. How do we ensure that those who are hungry have not only food but true nourishment ? Visit crsricebowl.org for more

The Season of LENT (Excerpts of The Very Rev. Dom Prosper Guéranger) Because the Holy Spirit is the principle of everything in the Church, its prayers are the most pleasing to the ear and heart of God, and therefore the most efficacious of all prayers. It is for this reason that our blessed Savior taught us to say Our Father, and not my Father; give us, forgive us, deliver us, and not give me, forgive me, deliver me. And when many are gathered in His name, does not this same Savior assure us that He is in the midst of them? The Divine events happened two thousand years ago, but their anniversary is kept in the liturgy; and its impression is thus reiterated every year in the minds of the faithful and renewed by their commemoration. This renovative power of the liturgical year is a mystery of the Holy Spirit, who unceasingly animates the work which He has inspired the Church to establish among men, that thus they might sanctify that time which has been given to them for the worship of their Creator. The renovation works also a twofold growth in the mind of a person: the increase of knowledge of the truths of faith and the development of the supernatural life. The faith of the believer is thus enlightened more and more each year. Christ’s Mysteries continue to be mysteries, but they are more deeply incorporated into us each year by the power of the special grace which the liturgy produces. The Forty Days’ Fast, which we call Lent is the Church’s preparation for Easter, and was instituted at the very commencement of Christianity. The Church has made it a time of recollection and penance, in preparation for the greatest of all her Feasts. Penance consists in contrition of the soul and in mortification of the body; these two parts are essential to it. The soul has willed the sin; the body has frequently co-operated in its commission. The Sacred Scriptures have a word for the inward disposition which admirably expresses the state of the Soul that has turned away from her sins: this word is Conversion. Just as under the term Fasting the Church comprises all kinds of mortification, so under the word Prayer she includes all those exercises of piety whereby the soul holds intercourse with her God. More frequent attendance at the services of the Church, attending daily at Mass, spiritual reading, meditation upon eternal truths and the Passion, hearing sermons, and, above all, the approaching the Sacraments of Penance and the Holy Eucharist - these are the chief means whereby the Faithful should offer to God the homage of Prayer during this holy Season. Finally, Almsdeeds comprise all the works of mercy to our neighbor. God has made it a law that charity shown towards our fellow-creatures, with the intention of pleasing our Creator, shall be rewarded as though it were done to Himself. How vividly this brings before us the reality and sacredness of the tie which He would have to exist between all people! Such is its necessity, that our Heavenly Father will not accept the love of any heart that refuses to show mercy. On the other hand, he accepts as genuine and as done to himself the charity of every Christian who, by a work of mercy shown to another, is really acknowledging and honoring that sublime union which makes all humanity to be one family with God as its Father. Hence it is that Alms-deeds done with this intention are not merely acts of human kindness, but are raised to the dignity of acts of religion, To assist St. Athanasius parish families to support the practice of almsgiving, especially in the Lenten season, we are encouraged to participate in our
LENTEN GOSPEL GIVING Each weekend, members of the parish (old, young, and in between) are encouraged to bring one item, as suggested by the readings of the day seen below, to whichever Mass they attend. There will also be a reminder for each week’s Lenten Gospel Giving suggestion in the Bulletin.
