MARCH 2016
Salinas Salinas City Elementary Educational Foundation
ISSUE FOUR
Message from the Superintendent: March is an exciting month! We complete our second trimester and during spring conferences teachers have the opportunity to discuss with our parents their child’s academic progress. This provides our families the opportunity to further their understanding of our standards based report card and how to support their child/children in the mastery of the new standards. Many of our schools are hosting Awards Assemblies to honor academic progress as well as promote students’ attendance and behavior achievements. It has been such joy to attend school events and watch the pride on students’ faces when receiving certificates, medals and/or trophies for their great accomplishments.
Please mark your calendars for April 16, 2016 for the Donna AlonzoVaughan Music Festival at Boronda Meadows from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. There is no cost for the event. All students in the District are invited to come and to perform music on stage. There will be a fancy Car Show, educational exhibits and lots of local dance/music performances outside. Students and their friends/family are welcome to stay for the entire day! Food will be available on site for purchase. It’s going to be so much fun. Please come and support our amazing students. If you’d like more information, or want to get your school involved, please contact: Margaret D’Arrigo-Martin, SCEEF President at
[email protected] or Jackie Cruz, Music Festival Chair at
[email protected]. Thank you!
Also, last weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Lyceum Spelling Bee where 4th and 5th grade students from nine of schools competed with other Monterey County schools. All of our students were outstanding with most moving forward to the second and third round of competition. We are so proud of Samuel Low from Mission Park who took 4th place in this Monterey County sponsored Spelling Bee. All participating students will be honored at the March 14th Board of Education meeting. It has been a pleasure to get to know some of our classified staff. Our food service, maintenance and transportation employees continue to greet me with a smile and have invited me to join them on local field trips or share a meal at one of the local schools. SCESD had the largest representation at the ACSA Secretaries Dinner & Dance for Region 10. I thoroughly enjoyed a fun filled evening with our classified clerks and secretaries. We are proud to honor those who provide a welcoming environment to all staff, students and parents each and everyday. Lastly, I am so proud of our many accomplishments but it is an extra treat to see our schools and teachers in local newspapers and news stations. Kudos to Oscar Ramos’ efforts for supporting SCESD migrant students and being featured on PBS documentary film. Congratulations to Amanda Reeves, Marlo Sharp and Mary Beth James for being selected to the Salinas Californian Teacher Honor Roll. Cheers to Loma Vista, Mission Park and Sherwood for your feature articles on PBIS and Anti- Bullying activities/ programs. As we look forward to turning our clocks forward an hour for daylight savings and welcoming the first day of spring a week later, my hopes are that everyone takes time off during our spring break to enjoy the outdoors and spend quality time with family, friends and loved ones.
Lyceum Spelling Bee
Congratulations to 5th grade student Samuel Low of Mission Park School who took 4th place in the Lyceum Countywide Spelling Bee on Saturday, February 26. Samuel correctly spelled philosopher, preliminary, quarrelsome, speculate and exhaustion. About 350 parents, teachers, principals, a superintendent (one of the spelling words), great-grandparents, grandparents and siblings provided enthusiastic support for these spelling aces. Language Arts Curriculum Adoption Whenever we have a conversa4on about a curriculum adop4on, we need to start with some driving ques4ons: What do we want for our students? What will best help them get there? How can we create environments that are consistently engaging and suppor:ng of both students and teachers? With an opportunity for a new Language Arts adop4on, we need to make sure that any program we select suits our needs and the objec4ves we have for student learning. This is an important decision that will have significant impact for years to come. Just last November, the State Board of Educa4on approved Language Arts programs that meet the criteria set for the new California State Standards. That was the first 4me anyone had the opportunity to look at the programs in their en4rety. Two of those programs meet the requirement of our school district that there be both English and Spanish Language Arts op4ons. One of the two programs is Benchmark Educa4on's, "Advance!" and "Adelante!" The other is SRA McGraw-‐Hill's, "Wonders" and
"Maravillas." There are samples of both programs available in the IMC at the district office for review. Next fall we will have grade levels at various schools pilo4ng these programs and sharing their feedback. At the same 4me, we will also have interested teachers working on developing units of study with a well renowned consultant. At the end of the pilot period, we will determine what we want to do for an adop4on. I invite everyone who is interested to aJend the PICT mee4ng on March 2 where we will share more informa4on about the pilo4ng process. We will also have a presenta4on from teachers at El Gabilan school who were able to visit with Connie Kamm, the consultant who is assis4ng a number of districts across California in developing their own units of study. They will share their experience and their enthusiasm regarding the process. I also invite everyone to aJend an informa4onal mee4ng with the consultant, Connie Kamm, on April 9 to ask ques4ons and learn more about the crea4on of units of study. Teachers will be compensated at the addi4onal rate of pay for aJending the informa4onal mee4ng. More specific details will be coming soon.

Educational Services The B.E.S.T. program has begun implemen4ng a new arts enrichment curriculum called Art in Ac4on for students in the B.E.S.T. A_er School Program across the district. Staff aJended a training in January and are presen4ng art lessons that focus on a famous ar4st and art technique or concept. Here is an example of student artwork from University Park's B.E.S.T. students. Applica4ons for the 2016-‐17 school year are available in school offices with priority given for students con4nuing in the program. Instructional Technology Department Tech U! Technology University, January 23, 2016 at Boronda Meadows Elementary. Kudos to everyone who rocked Tech U. Facilitators, participants, and support staff all contributed to the positive energy, interactive learning, and inspired leadership. Over 60 teachers attended Tech. U and were thoroughly immersed in hands-‐on learning.
2016 CISC Symposium “Student Voices” The Computer Using Educators (CUE) organization collaborated with the Curriculum & Instruction Steering Committee (CISC) Leadership Symposium to produce a student-centered pre-conference event held in Monterey, CA on Feb. 24, 2016. CISC is the steering committee of the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA). Six students from four district schools represented Salinas City Elementary on this panel and made a small presentation to discuss their views on "What I want out of school vs. What I am getting". The students did an amazing job in presenting their ideas! The students were Emily Lopez and Priscilla Garcia from Boronda Meadows, Lincoln Johnson from Mission Park, Aleah Schreiber and Ricky Perez from Monterey Park, and Lauren Villaneda from Laurel Wood School. The students were supported by three teacher-leaders, Andrea Tocci from Boronda Meadows, María Paredes-Márquez from Mission Park, and Nicole Williams, who assisted Monterey Park School. PFT administration window, May 16-20, 2016. ! Super Saturday Program - Academic Attendance Recovery Coordinated (AARC) Program: What is the AARC Program? AARC is a comprehensive program designed to provide a broad spectrum of instructional programs for students with excused/unexcused absences. It is also a way in which districts can recapture lost ADA revenues through a four hour Saturday/Sunday instructional program plus a short nutrition break. The AARC program is different than the traditional Saturday Discipline program in that the focus is on instruction. The instruction can reflect any type of curriculum that is offered during the regular week. The curriculum can be tutorial, enrichment, test prep, or any type of instruction that the school site or district would like to offer. The scope is broad and unlimited. ! ! ! !
What are the benefits for implementing an AARC Program? •Recapture instructional time for students.
•Recapture lost ADA revenue for the district.
•Employment of district staff.
•Reimbursement for Free and Reduced Lunches served. See chart with ADA percentages showing the impact of the AARC program (in green) thus far. Thank you to all of our staff members for going the extra mile to make these gains possible.

Food Expiration Dates Cheryl Camany, Homeless Liaison
Many of us pay a+en-on to the dates on food that we purchase without fully understanding the significance of those dates. Therefore, we might be throwing away good food which in turn could be feeding one of our homeless families. Please see detailed informa-on in the le+er from Food Bank of Monterey County.

Hi Cheryl, I apologize for the delay in responding about our conversation the other morning on food safety and dates on canned foods. First of all, thank you for asking about food safety. It is important that we are aware of the meaning of the dates on our canned foods and dry goods. The more information we have and are able to share with others, the better off we are in our knowledge of food safety. Most dates on canned foods are “best buy” dates. That means that the stores need to sell the foods by these dates. The manufacturer of these products also guarantees that the food quality as far as taste is 100% of how they want their foods to taste. After these dates, food taste cannot be guaranteed (it might drop to 99% or 98%)….but it does not mean that the food is not safe to eat. The food can be safe for several years beyond the “best buy” date. We, here at the Food Bank, go out only two years beyond these dates. The United States government says it is safe to go as far as seven years beyond the date. We currently stock our shelves with 2015 and newer “best buy” dates. Anything before that has already been taken. Of course, perishable foods are another story. Since we do live in an area blessed by a bounty of fresh produce, we are able to provide fresh items to the agencies. Common sense tells us the sooner we eat this the better it tastes. If it smells and wilts, toss it out. Please let me know if you have any further questions on food safety. Thank you, Cathie

The Founda+on funded transporta+on for all of our 5th grade students to Hartnell College in February to enjoy a special 45 minute Piano and Organ Italian Symphonic duo performance by Francesco ABes+ and MaBeo Galli. The world renowned musicians were sponsored by the Hartnell College Founda+on. The opportunity for our 5th graders to experience a live musical performance on stage is one area of focus for SCEEF. The two day performance by the Italian Symphonic duo was a wonderful learning experience and a treat for our 5th graders! Earlier in the 2015-‐16 school year, our 4th Graders were invited to see the Nutcracker Ballet at Sherwood Hall. Another fine example of SCEEF suppor+ng music/arts for our students. Thank you!
