Superintendent’s Article for March Newsletter:

All of you are aware of the most recent school tragedy in Florida and sadly, these types of incidents seem to be occurring more frequently over the past decade. In addition, it seems we hear more often about child abductions today when compared to the past. Schools, families, and communities must work together to ensure the safety of our children. Though safety inside the school is ultimately the responsibility of the administrators and school staff, parents can take a few basic steps to ensure a safe school experience. The following are recommendations from the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP):

Learn the school's emergency procedures. Emergency plans and phone numbers are usually included in school handbooks and posted in classrooms. Taking a few extra minutes to familiarize yourself and your child with emergency information can give him the confidence he needs to act quickly in emergency situations. Know travel routes to and from the school. Make sure you and your child know both primary and alternate routes. In an emergency, roads can be blocked and it's important to have a backup plan. It is also important to know which route your child typically takes to and from school. Know and follow school security and safety measures. These might include signing in when visiting the school, being escorted when walking through the building, or wearing a visitor pass. Following these procedures also sets a great example for your kids. Talk with your child about safety. Be specific. Talk about instinct and paying attention to funny feelings of fear. Explain what to do if she doesn't feel safe (find a teacher, call 911, etc.). Make sure she knows how to contact you or a trusted neighbor who is likely to be at home. Inform school staff about health and emotional concerns. Whether your child has a food allergy, a physical disability, or has been subject to bullying, make sure to keep your child's teachers and principal in the loop. Get involved. Talk with the principal about what you can do to increase school safety, such as organizing parents to form a neighborhood watch before and after school. Sometimes parent groups are highly successful in making improvements in traffic safety during drop off and pick up times. Orient-Macksburg Community Schools has a number of measures in place to help to ensure student safety. Please help by following these guidelines: Emergency plans are in place for fire, severe weather, and intruders. The staff have all been informed of these plans and they are practiced with all students/staff in the fall and spring. All school doors remain locked from 8:00 a.m. throughout the school day. There are cameras at the main East and West doors and visitors must push a button to be allowed access to the school. All visitors must sign in at the office. Students must be signed out to leave the school during the school day and must sign in when they arrive. Notes are required from parents/guardians if students’ plans for transportation to and from school and extracurricular events change or do not follow typical protocols. NOTE: Please be consistent in providing this information through a note, email, or phone call to the school/coach. Students whose parents have varying levels of custody, including limited visitation, no contact, etc., must have official paperwork submitted to the office that includes this information. Appropriate staff are informed of these official orders. Note: If you have revised or new court orders regarding contact and visitation, please make sure the school office has copies. If your child will be late or absent from school, please call or email the office. Parents/guardians will be contacted if we have not heard from you and your child is absent. Perhaps most important of all – parents, students, family members, and community members who have indications that a student is depressed, experiencing mental or emotional issues, or suspicious, troubling behaviors and social media posts should immediately contact the school/medical personnel/ law enforcement officials. This may help to prevent school violence or other traumatic events. It’s better to “be safe than sorry” if you have any concerns. Orient-Macksburg Community Schools has a caring staff and small student/teacher ratios, which allow us to know students and develop positive relationships with them. This is important, as the best preventative measures in regard to school violence are trusting relationships with adults. It may be impossible to predict a crisis before it happens; however, the safety measures we have in place and following the guidelines described above will help your child to be as safe as possible at school.

Lego® Camps Tuesday, March 13 is the next Lego Camp at the public library. Parents be sure to send a note to school on the morning of the Lego Camp. In the event of an early dismissal due to snow or ice the Lego Camp will be canceled. The public library is always closed if the school dismisses early or when school is closed due to bad weather. On February 3rd, we had students who attended State for Large Group Speech @ Waukee. Vinh Nguyen performed a Solo Mime and a Choral Reading was presented by Brooklyn Sammons, Ashlyn Kralik, Caitlyn Buckman, Cortney Gross, and Sarah McClelland. Both performances got an overall 1 rating. Way to go kids! On February 24th, we had students who attended The District Individual Group Speech at Osceola. Stephen Buckman gave performances in both Improve and Poetry. Brooklyn Sammons gave performances in both Radio Broadcasting and Prose. They were both nominated to go to state for each! So on to State on March 10th! Great Job!!!! Save-the-Date The Spring Music Program has been rescheduled. It will now be Tuesday, May 15th, at 6:30 PM.
