Has a relationship with the students (and teachers), in the actual classrooms in the district, to better understand their academic needs. I know my daughter feels there is a disconnect and that the students have no voice. I also know that teachers have a huge challenge with discipline, however, their moral needs to be lifted somehow. These students are struggling with frustrated, numb teachers (and in some rare instances, slightly abusive teachers, for lack of a better word,) who are trying to fight discipline issues and teach content, but lack a simple human, compassionate, interested connection with the students. Academic programs need to be addressed, but someone needs to be monitoring some of the teachers and how they manage the classroom and are teaching the content as well.

They generally look out for the well being of the students and do their best with what little is provided. 2. Jerri Early -- she has been with the district for 23+ years and knows what has been tried, what worked, and what doesn't. She is extremely logical and efficient. Include her in meetings and decisions because she has the students and staffs' best interest at hear. A strength would be the employees of the district. They are warm, friendly and make you feel a member of the team/family. Another strength would be the feeling that employees want to do well and feel successful. If there are road blocks, I feel it's important to listen to what that employee is saying to see if improvements/changes need to be made. The district (school board) is not willing to aggressively go after becoming an A district. There are very nice people working in the district office who are not professionally prepared to take us to that level. We never seem to hire people who could bring fresh ideas in. We just reassign the same people and give them a new title. You would be amazed at how many district employees put their kids on those Kyrene/Tempe buses everyday.

The growing district brings all kinds of new students, and personnel and space are not always dealt with quickly within the special education sector. Being close to Phoenix, the community is perfect for families but we do get a disproportionate amount of students who receive special education looking to receive services just like those provided in a metro area like Phoenix. Special education providers become desperately overwhelmed, through no fault of their own because enrollment wasn't predicted correctly, and work conditions become toxic and stressful. Another issue is the requirement of students with special needs, who are starting from behind because of the "wait to fail" model of special education, having to make 125% or more yearly growth to show growth based on current district tests given at their grade level and not their ability level, when typical children only have to make 100%--so kids who already have an identified difficulty learning have to essentially learn more, at a faster rate, and a more difficult level, than typical students in order to meet yearly growth, with fewer resources than general education students get when it comes to special education caseload sizes and assistant help. When this impossible growth doesn't happen, general education teachers are often upset that the special needs children are "pulling their scores down" or "affecting their bonus," creating an atmosphere of division between who they feel are "their kids" and who they feel don't really belong in their classrooms. Seeing as right now special education providers are the only staff BRINGING IN additional money to the district (through Medicaid billing while it lasts) it would seem prudent that special education be a priority in order to help ALL our students succeed by providing more staff and resources to special education.

Hard to appease the community when there is so much negativity floating around, no matter how much positivity is spread throughout the community by MUSD. I understand we cannot appease everyone, but once again we are looking for ANOTHER superintendent (whom has been open about "job shopping" himself over the past two years). We lose good teachers from the district every year. We need to make our teachers want to stay. Families of children in the district are not held accountable for their own children. There needs to be an expectation put on the families for their responsibility in their child's education. We are leaning too much toward teaching through technology. The new online math program in the junior high is terrible. We need to go back to teachers teaching out of books instead of assigning tons of problems online and students having to figure out how to do them.

Although it is also a strength, the potential for growth is a challenge as well as we continue to see community students bussed to schools outside of the district. The district also has challenges in teacher and administration retention.

12/15/2017 10:28 PM

109

The district lacks diversity in leadership (demonstrated, yet again sadly with the new positions at the hs)- it is time to involve populations that are representative of the community. In addition, the definition of insanity is continuing to do the same thing and get the same outcome... continuing to hire from within, when the district struggles with proper discipline management and real-life experiences, creating more open teaching positions, is ridiculous. Hopefully, the new Superintendent can gather resources, take over at the helm, and staff administration with quality, diverse, student and growth focused individuals. Individuals who will lead their schools, be present (the number of events attended with zero admin presence is disheartening.), and be willing to make changes. Hopefully they will be realistic in the population and problems that impact our school district. We need someone dynamic and willing to take chances. We need more PR involvement, when in turn things are improving and transparency allows for current, future, and hopefully returning populations to hear about the district. The community is watching.

Our technology does not match surrounding districts(Kyrene), we have too many behavior and special ed issues. If you consider that nearly 2,000 students get on a bus to Kyrene every day that is several schools worth of students. They do not take IEP or behavior issues, therefore there is a more concentrated amount of SPED students and behavior issues in each classroom. 1. Hidden Agendas---Committees are formed for everything but those committees seem useless because only the interest of the admin/district employees are carried outand not the best most logical solution for the students and staff. 2. Morale---We at the high school have been "bullied" by recent admin and made to feel like we constantly stink at our jobs. There are so many ways to show your employees that you trust and care about them and build them up when improvement is needed.

Our district is continuing to grow at a rapid pace, and I think it is going to be challenging to continue to keep up with the growth without hiring more staff, possibly building more schools, etc. I think that we really need to consider these challenges as we select our next superintendent. As we continue to grow as a district, we need to really think about and consider even our very youngest community members and look into the value of quality early childhood and early intervention programs which will benefit our students and community as a whole and as they continue on in their years throughout our district.

Transportation is our biggest issue I believe. Not only having buses that are late, but breaking down. Also, the issue of low wages for our staff. We need to raise our wages to compete with other school districts. If we value our children, we will value our staff and pay enough to get quality people working in our school district. I feel that some staff are 'tolerated' because the need to have that staff person working, period, is more important than their behavior with our children. If we had options for better staff, we wouldn't have to settle in our children's education, but we won't get options unless we are competitive in pay.

- lack of a plan for making effective funding decisions to best support all areas of operations. Currently, specific subject areas and parts of the district are funded while other critical areas go ignored. This is due in part to most funding being retained at the district level and a failure to provide schools with appropriate site budgets and control of their staffing and needs. - a lack of staff accountability. MUSD needs simple, clear expectations for staff and a fair and equitable procedure for employee discipline that is consistently applied to staff at all levels, from district admin to custodians. Note this does NOT mean we need a “house cleaning” superintendent, just someone who can build our process. - student/community apathy. We need to recognize that the main barrier to student success is motivation of students and also parents to take ownership of their role in the educational process. We need to address this before any new instructional initiative can be effective.

1. Too many mandatory trainings for teachers. One teacher on my campus was absent 5 days in November just for trainings. That’s excessive and ultimately not beneficial for students. 2. Maricopa has a disproportionately large number of children in foster care and special needs children. Their needs are being supported currently by providing the bare minimum. If more supports and services can be implemented for these students, it can help to avoid major learning and behavioral issues on campuses. 3. Lack of proper support offered to struggling teachers. Just sending these struggling teachers to a training or two is not effective. Putting them on an improvement plan when they never received proper mentoring and modeling of more effective practices is shameful. MUSD still retains the “good old boys club” mentality; once someone higher up decided they don’t like you, good luck keeping your job.

The upkeep of the district office. The district office is the first impression of the district and the grounds in the front of the building need some TLC. Walking into a clean building is a great feeling of pride when you arrive to work. Not sure if it is a lack of funding or custodial staff but the upkeep of personal offices, dusting and vacuuming is done by that employee. Another possible challenge is funding.
