Teachers notes Ngā whetū o Matariki

The cluster known to New Zealanders as Matariki has a deep history for many cultures. New knowledge suggests there are nine stars in the constellation of Matariki, rather than seven. This resource includes the two new stars that have been added and acknowledges that some iwi have different stories about the cluster. Often the whetū were looked at separately and not as a cluster Star.

Domain and meaning This star reflects all of these things.

Waitī

Fresh water, and food that lives in it. Wai-water

Waitā

Sea water, and food that lives in it. Wai-water

Waipuna-arangi

Precipitation, water in the sky. Rain falling from the sacred sky. (Ranginui-sky) wai-water

Tupuānuku

Food growing in Papatūānuku -Mother Earth

Tupuārangi

Food growing in the ngahere, up in the trees. Tane’s domain. Trees, birds and berries.

Ururangi

Wind.

Pōhutukawa

Hiwaiterangi

Matariki

Gathering of people and whānau. Reflection. The environment.
