Prelude Words of Welcome

Rev. Dave Ogilvie

Call to Worship LEADER:

Servant Messiah, kneeling before your disciples;

PEOPLE:

Generous Teacher, washing feet;

LEADER:

Surprising Christ, exercising servanthood;

PEOPLE:

Humble Rabbi, modeling ministry;

LEADER:

Through your actions, by your words, we know what service is;

PEOPLE:

through your being, by your example, we know what love is.

LEADER:

You do not call us to be honoured;

PEOPLE:

You do not call us to power over others.

LEADER:

You call us to wash feet, to humble service;

PEOPLE:

to self-giving, self-caring love with you.

LEADER:

And you call us now to worship God.

PEOPLE:

And so we sing God’s praise!

Song of Praise: REFRAIN:

"Called By Earth and Sky" Called by earth and sky, promise of hope held high. This is our sacred living trust, treasure of life sanctified, Called by earth and sky. 2

1.

Precious these waters, endless seas, deep ocean’s dream, waters of healing, rivers of rain, the wash of love again.

2.

Precious this gift, the air we breathe; wind born and free. Breath of the Spirit, blow through this place, our gathering and our grace.

3.

Precious these mountains, ancient sands; vast fragile land. Seeds of our wakening, rooted and strong, Creation’s faithful song.

4.

Precious the fire that lights our way, bright dawning day. Fire of passion, sorrows undone, our faith and justice one.

* Prayer of Approach Scripture Reading: * A Song:

Luke 22: 1 – 8, 13

“Bind Us Together”

CHORUS:

Bind us together, Lord, bind us together With cords that cannot be broken. Bind us together, Lord, bind us together O bind us together with love.

We are the family of God, Joined by the Spirit above; Working together with Christ, Growing and building in love. Scripture Reading: * A Song:

Exodus 3: 7 – 12

“Go Down, Moses”

3

1. When Israel was in Egypt’s land; Let my people go! Oppressed so hard they could not stand; Let my people go! Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt’s land; Tell old Pharaoh to let my people go! 2. No more shall they in bondage toil; Let my people go! Let them come out with Egypt’s spoil; Let my people go! Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt’s land; Tell old Pharaoh to let my people go! 3. We need not always weep and mourn; Let my people go! And wear those slavery chains forlorn; Let my people go! Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt’s land; Tell old Pharaoh to let my people go! 4. O let us all from bondage flee; Let my people go! And let us all in God be free; Let my people go! Go down, Moses, way down in Egypt’s land; Tell old Pharaoh to let my people go! Responsive Reading:

Psalm 116 – a paraphrase

LEADER:

I love you, LORD! You answered my prayers. You paid attention to me, and so I will pray to you as long as I live.

PEOPLE:

Death attacked from all sides, and I became tangled in its chains. But when I was really hurting, I prayed and said, “LORD, please don't let me die!” And you heard me.

LEADER:

You are kind, LORD, so good and merciful. When I was helpless, you saved me 4

and you treated me so caringly that I don't need to worry anymore. PEOPLE:

You, LORD, have saved my life from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling Now I will walk at your side in this land of the living.

LEADER:

What must I give you, LORD, for being so good to me? I will pour out an offering of wine to you, and I will pray in your name because you have saved me.

PEOPLE:

I will keep my promise to you when your people meet. I will worship you, LORD, just as my mother did.

LEADER:

I will offer you a sacrifice to show how grateful I am, and I will pray.

PEOPLE:

I will gather with your people at your temple, and there I will shout praises to my LORD. And I will pray…

LEADER:

Even as he taught us to pray…

ALL:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. 5

* A Song: 1.

“Bread of Life, Feed My Soul” Bread of life, feed my soul, As the presence of the Spirit makes me whole. Bread of life, fill my heart With the grace and mercy you impart. I have heard your voice calling, “Come, my friend, and share In the feast that is laid out for you To show how much I care.”

2.

Bread of life, help me live, A life as pure and true as Jesus did. Bread of life, help me see The boundless love of Christ for you and me. I have heard your voice calling, “Come, my friend, and share In the feast that is laid out for you To show how much I care.”

1.

Bread of life, feed my soul, As the presence of the Spirit makes me whole. Bread of life, fill my heart With the grace and mercy you impart.

Scripture Reading:

Luke 22: 14 – 23

The First Gift Sharing the Bread and the Cup

The Second Gift Washing the Disciples' Feet

The Third Gift A New Commandment of Love 6

* A Song:

“A New Commandment”

A new commandment I give unto you, That you love one another, as I have loved you; That you love one another, as I have loved you. By this shall all know that you are my disciples, If you have love, one for another; By this shall all know that you are my disciples, If you have love, one for another. The Fourth Gift The Gift of Peace – to be shared with one another

* A Song:

“Shadows Gather”

(Music: EVERLASTING LOVE)

1. Shadows gather, deep and cold; lamplight flickers, fades and fails. Lord, you know what daybreak holds: thorns and beatings, cross and nails. You will be denied, betrayed when the rooster wakes the sun. Yet you kneel alone and pray, “Not my will, but thine be done.” Scripture Reading:

Luke 22: 39 - 42

We move quietly to the "garden" to close the service.

* Benediction

Thank You! We wish to thank the young people from the PATHWAYS program who have given leadership in the service this evening – Sophia Lazaric, Cam Foran, Grace Veinotte, Emily Sweet, Simon Tracy, Juliette Lazaric, Michaela Tracy, and Helen Opitz - and Cameron Porter for sharing his musical gifts. 7

What is ‘Maundy Thursday?’ Christians remember Maundy Thursday as the day of the Last Supper when Jesus washed the feet of his disciples and established the ceremony of Communion. The night of Maundy Thursday is when Jesus was betrayed in the garden of Gethsemane by Judas. The word 'maundy' comes from the command given by Christ at the Last Supper that we should love one another. In many other countries this day is known as Holy Thursday. In Britain, the sovereign takes part in the Ceremony of the Royal Maundy, which dates back to Edward I. The ceremony, held at Gloucester cathedral this year, sees the Queen giving Maundy Money to deserving senior citizens (one man and one woman for each year of the sovereign's age) who are usually chosen for their service to the community. They are given red and white purses containing coins made especially for the occasion. In the 17th Century, and earlier, the King or Queen would wash the feet of the selected poor people as a gesture of humility and in remembrance of Jesus' washing the feet of the disciples. The last monarch to do this was James II. Roman Catholic church services still feature a ceremony whereby the priest washes the feet of 12 people to commemorate Jesus washing the disciples' feet. Some other churches nowadays also have foot-washing ceremonies as part of their Maundy Thursday services. Maundy Thursday is also the day on which the Roman Catholic Church "consecrates" the supply of anointing oil to be used in ceremonies during the year at a special 'Chrism Mass'. Ruth Taylor
