FLYING DENTISTS ASSOCIATION

National Convention Lake Placid, NY June 15-19, 2017 Spring is finally hitting the Northeast. Warmer temperatures, longer days and spring showers are washing the snow off the Adirondack Mountains and life in Lake Placid is transitioning to summer. Our long awaited National Convention is just around the corner now. We are excited! This meeting encompasses everything that makes the Flying Dentist Association so much fun. You will get the opportunity to fly to a unique area you may have not been before. Share dental education, camaraderie, adventure and great food with both old friends and new ones. We see that many of you have already booked your Hotel rooms and sent in your registration fees. Thank you. If you haven’t yet, there is still time. Our room block will be released to the public on May 16th. See my past newsletters on all the activities we have planned for Placid. I’m getting excited to get up in the North country and breathe the fresh air of the Adirondacks. It will be great to see many of our FDA friends and hopefully meet some new ones. PR E SI D E N T’ S L E TTE R We are between meetings, so I’m going to ramble. It’s springtime in Minnesota, which is a mixed blessing. We sure love the warmer weather and the fact that summer is coming. However, the melted snow exposes 4 months of trash on the ground, it’s rainy season and there is still ice in the clouds at altitude. The transition from snow blowers to lawn mowers, storm doors to screens, snow machines to motorcycles, etc…, usually takes a few days. It’s like we live in two worlds with all the crap we have.

practical to cross half the country and the Rockies in a light plane for a 3-4 day weekend, which is why we don’t get to see our west coast members as often as we like. Tara and I are really looking forward to the national convention in Lake Placid. We’ve never been in upstate New York but I hear it is beautiful. Bill D’Angelo has put together an impressive program with something for everyone. If you haven’t already, put down this

Fortunately the FDA meetings, (skiing, Dominican Republic mission and Cuba), have kept us active and warm this past winter. Next week we are going to the Napa Valley for some wine, education and visiting our west coast friends we don’t get to see that often. We are going to airline there. There is no shame in that, it just sucks being on an airliner. Sometimes it’s just not

I have learned so much through our continuing education programs but also just by talking to other members using different techniques and materials from different specialties and parts of the country. With just a few pointers from Ned Markey over a couple of beers, I no longer dread treating kids. Considering a new airplane or upgrade or need a major repair? Talk to your friends in the FDA. FLYING 2017 National Meeting (Con’t from p.1) Our featured speaker this year at the Lake Placid closing night banquet will be Catherine Fish. She has taught motivating and entertaining aviation safety courses in the States and Europe since the 80’s. She has a unique ability to connect with both pilots and non pilots in the crowd, using humor to connect with the audience. She is a seventeen-year National Accident Prevention Counselor. Flying since 1973, she is a certified single-engine, multi-engine and instrument flight instructor. Her 6,000 hours of flight time include flying for a commuter airline, flying as a USDA contract pilot and teaching 300 students how to fly. Cathe' was the Professor of Aviation Technology at Cochise College for five years. She has been one of the AOPA Air Safety Foundation's favorite lead instructors for seventeen years, teaching 400 Flight Instructor Revalidation Clinics, 100 Pitch Hitter Seminars and many other safety programs. Catherine will plan on a Monday afternoon lecture for all the pilots in the group at the airport on more technical topics. Her closing banquet speech will be focused on fun aviation topics for both pilots and non pilots.

FLYING National Meeting (Con’t from p.4)

Flight Planning for Lake Placid Our home base airport for the National Meeting this year is Lake Placid (LKP). It’s a beautiful mountain airport located very close to town. Its located in close proximity to the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks. Mount Marcy is the highest in the area and directly south of LKP and 5344ft high. Many of you will be approaching from the South and will fly over some of the most beautiful terrain the Northeast has to offer. The Adirondack State Park encompasses 6 million acres of lakes, mountains, forests and small towns. Check out all the SeaPlane bases to the Southwest…Long Lake (NY9) is really fun to land in. For all you guys with wheels, Marcy Field located in Keene is a cool 2400ft grass strip to check out. The runway at LKP is 4,196ft long at an elevation of 1,747ft. Its worth noting that on the sectional chart there are many mountains surrounding the airport that rise 3000ft above it. Of special importance is paying attention to the Olympic ski jump towers which are 2162ft high within a mile of the airport. All of this makes for a beautiful approach on a VFR day. If the winds are ripping, the turbulence can be fun on approach. LAKE PLACID, NEW YORK APP CRS

If your flight plan has you arriving at night or if the weather is low IFR, Saranac Lake (SLK) is a great alternate (13NM to the Northwest). It has a 6500ft runway with an ILS RWY 23 approach with a cool DME Arch with MALSR and 200ft minimums. If you land here, its about a 30min drive to LKP. Call me and Ill come grab you in the FDA Van. I may suggest dropping the gear high to stay close to maneuvering speed on decent and staying west of the highest peaks on decent because the wind is usually out of that direction. If there is an overcast to get under, LKP has a GPS RWY 14 approach with 1400ft high minimums. On close look to the approach plate it is not authorized at night and I would suggest not even landing at night even in VFR conditions. I have done this once in the SeaPlane in VFR using Foreflight synthetic vision as a guide to avoid mountains and it was pretty hairy.

FLYING FDA Drive Trip 2018 Caribbean Extravaganza We are proud to unveil the next chapter of our annual FDA Caribbean Adventure. This article will be a sneak peek at the nicest place the FDA has ever been to in the Caribbean. Sandals Emerald Bay on Great Exuma, Bahamas. You have all seen the TV commercials for Sandals and know what it looks like, now lets experience it for ourselves! Cuba is over and we had such a terrific time that the group was chomping at the bit asking for info on the next one. We are still firming up all the details but here is what we know. The date is March 11th returning March 16th which will be our typical Sunday thru Friday which gives us a couple wx days on each side. This is a drop dead gorgeous place that wowed us 5 years ago when we were there previously. This is an all inclusive with delicious food, all the top shelf liqueur you can think of, all water sports vehicles, sailboats, kayaks, even Scuba.

The price is $1648 per person so it is less expensive than last time! A deposit of $100 over person is due by July 14, 2017. This is payable by credit card only. Call Stacy to book your reservation. If you have never gone with us to the islands before, DO NOT WORRY! We will do all the hard stuff, flight planning, Customs, survival, you name it we do it for you. Please strongly consider this opportunity. None of us are getting any younger! What are you waiting for? Brenda and Steve

Five years ago the cost was close to $2000/person and we still had 80 people partake, we have 30 rooms allotted to us so don’t dilly dally as they will fill up soon. We have to have our rooms request in by July so there is a bit of urgency to this.

Cuba Recap Cuba is over except for the memories and pictures. What a trip it was. 65 people made the great adventure and none were disappointed. The food was spectacular with lobster 1-2 times every day, the accommodations were exquisite, the tours were outstanding, and the camaraderie was, as always, the best part. So many 1st timers to the FDA not to mention 1st timers to island flying. We even had 15 brave souls (4 women) that jumped out of a perfectly well maintained (😀 ) Russian helicopter from 10,000 feet landing lightly on the ocean beach in front of our resort. Magical. The CE was truly superior. We were all blown away by the breadth and depth of knowledge our CE presenters had on their respecti ce subjects. Check out all our pictures with the link on the FDA website. We even had a bus "chant" that the party bus peeps were proud to proclaim, check it out too. Next year is Sandals. Don't be left out! FLYING FDA Regional News Western District Welcome to spring time. For the last 4 years the west coast has been in a pretty severe drought. Water rationing has become the norm in many areas. Media and the water people were saying it would take 4 to 5 years of above average precipitation to get things back to normal. Well, in west coast fashion, we got things back to beyond normal in just a few months. Ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe area have had record amounts of snow fall this year and a couple of resorts have stated that they could stay open until August. Area lakes are full and dumping water to make room for anticipated summer runoff. Flying just about anywhere in Northern Nevada reveals green everywhere and there is standing water in areas where there had not been for many years. While this past winter seemed like it might never end, finally our flying weather has been getting more predictable. I hope everyone who wants to has been getting out and flying when possible. We should never take for granted the freedom that being pilots allows us. By the time you read this, the Western District Fly-in will be a thing of the past. It looks like we have a great group attending and I’ll have a full report next time. Hope everyone is having a great spring. Blue Skies and if necessary, keep the approach needles centered. Bill Holmes

Eastern District Want a little education and a lot of fun? First read David McCullough’s book “The Wright Brothers” and then join us for a fall Fly-in at Kitty Hawk, NC. Dates for the Kitty Hawk Fly-in are August 25-27. We will be staying at the Comfort Inn North on the Outer Banks. Make room reservation directly with the front desk; their number is 252-441-6333. Tell front desk you are with the Flying Dentists. Street side rooms are $189: ocean view, $250. Cut-off date for room reservations is July 25. Breakfast is in included in price of room. Continuing education will be Saturday morning. The afternoon will be devoted to aviation via the Wright Brothers and their flying experience on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. More details for the week-end and registration information will be in next newsletter. Safe flying, Steve Sudderth

S A F ETY Aviation’s Best Headset Given Away at National Meeting You read that absolutely right, Lightspeed is supplying their newest headset, the PFX (Personal Flying Experience), to the FDA for some lucky pilot during the National Meeting. As you know, every year a prize is given to a pilot that has undergone Wing’s training or equivalent or a new rating during the previous 12 months. This year’s prize is of great value ($1100) and un-matched performance. For you that don’t know about Lightspeed’s PFX headset, here are some facts. A headset has 3 jobs to do. 1) reduce wind/engine noise with Active Noise Reduction ANR technology 2) provide crisp and clear communication between ATC/pilot/passengers 3) for audiophiles, provide superior music reproduction. This headset has raised the bar with all three upon which all other headsets will be compared. It has cutting edge technology with the ability to map YOUR ear with SONAR and continually sample cockpit noise to fine tune it’s noise canceling duty during a flight. After a 30 minute demo at OSH 2 yrs ago comparing the Zulu 2 (already a superior headset) to the PFX in all 3 phases, it clearly took headset technology to a whole new level. I then had the opportunity to try one out in my 210 for a real world experiment and it was breathtaking. On my first flight I thought something was wrong with my plane as it was

so quiet compared to my high performance Zulu 2 headsets that Brenda and I have. I also am a huge audiophile and the music reproduction was startling. Everything is pilot programmable from treble/bass/voice clarity, etc. Pair this with a good audio panel and a good music source and it will sound like you are in a BMW luxury car complete with Blue Tooth music capability. Check out these 2 links: http://www.lightspeedaviation.com/Zulu_PFX/ subgrouping.htm?cat=34803 https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=Pdi7uAFEgHw&feature=youtu.be&utm_source=icon_New s&utm_medium=in-depth_PFX&utm_campaign=3_19_News In order to qualify for this headset, you need to do training with an instructor and take a copy of the logbook entry to give to the FDA at Lake Placid. Names will be drawn during the final banquet Monday evening. Chances to win this headset are very very good. You must be present to win!

MEM BE R’ S MA IL BOX The FDA has 2 new family members. March 26 Frankie Ray Hahn was born, parents Amy and Beau Hahn, and on March 27 Hudson Dean Keener was born to Lydia and Brad Keener. Both babies are doing great and ready to travel.

S W NE

Both Brad and Amy are planning on bring all 3 of their kids to Lake Placid. Think they have the youngest attendee award locked up! Speaking of kids, there are a herd of them coming, also signed up are 3 Hubbards, 3 Markeys + friends with kids. We’re going to have a kid party!

FDA Members receive Award Members Bill Hohlt and Chuck Wait each received the "Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award" from the FAA for 50 years of safe flying. Dr. Wait soloed in May of 1966 and Dr. Hohlt soloed in June of 1966. We both appreciate all of those safety seminars that the FDA sponsored. As of April 4th of 2017, there have been only 3980 recipients of this award.
