6th Sunday of Easter It’s easy to take things for granted. Good food, a great family, a loving spouse, an outstanding school or a wonderful community all suffer from the same disease: familiarity. These things are a part of our life everyday and after a while, we fail to notice just how special and important they are. It sometimes takes a visitor’s appreciation to jolt us out of our complacency and to rekindle our gratitude for the blessings that we have. Take faith, for example. When religious practice settles into a routine, it can become just one more thing on a To-Do list. It no longer impresses, or motivates or inspires. Pretty soon, we can find ourselves going through the motions of prayer and sacrament, focused more on what else we need to do rather than on what God wants us to do. Family life is even more vulnerable. It’s easy to see just the faults and failings of those who are closest to us. But there is so much more to know and love and do. Family life and marriage is so much better when each family member actively participates, contributing something to an atmosphere of love and acceptance, support and growth. Don’t hold back, waiting for the right moment, or the best opportunity or for someone else to make the first move or offer an apology. Do something today, right now and see your spouse and your family as the blessing they really are. ~James Gaffney, © 2008 Karides Lic. to St. George Publishing
