F ROM THE PASTOR Dear Friends, In the past few weeks I have been announcing the major changes regarding the priests assigned to the parishes of St. Athanasius and St. Agnes. I want to restate them briefly here, as dramatic as they may be, because not everyone has received all the information just through pulpit announcements or word of mouth. If you have heard all this before, please jump to the second half (“Collaborative News”) to view Fr. Steve Rock’s bulletin entry for this week at St. Agnes. As for me, I have been reassigned as Pastor for the two Catholic parishes and school in Methuen, which effectively begins the last week of June; my final weekend here will be June 23/24. Fr. Patrick is not going to be assigned here, either. The changes that Fr. Rock relays below for St. Agnes affect St. Athanasius in that he and Fr. Nieme will be responsible for fulfilling the pastoral needs here as well as there (along with whatever assistance Fr. Rock receives from visiting priests). Essentially, the pastoral team that Fr. Rock builds will be the team that serves both parishes. There are no current plans to assign a priest specifically to St. Athanasius or to have one reside here. The primary goal of these changes is to make this next year one of transition to the formal beginning of Collaboration in June of 2019 when one Pastor will be named for both Reading Parishes. As I stated in my announcement last week, Fr. Rock’s intention is to maintain everything essentially as they are now at St. Athanasius. Nevertheless, that will require that you all pitch in to help fill in the gaps to keep things running smoothly here while being a dedicated part of the run-up to collaboration so that the best decisions can be made for the future of the Reading Catholic community. I ask for your prayers in this difficult time of transition; please be assured of mine for you. God bless. COLLABORATIVE NEWS by Fr. Steve Rock In the Navy if a ship was about to encounter a storm with strong winds an announcement would be made throughout the ship, “RIG FOR HEAVY SEAS!” These “HEAVY SEAS” will soon arrive for the Reading Catholic Community. Last Friday I received two notices from the Archdiocese, one appointing Fr. Lambert Nieme as Fr. Ed’s replacement; he will arrive in a couple of weeks. The other is my appointment as Administrator of St. Athanasius Parish, effective June 26th. Next month Fr. Darin Colarusso is being transferred to the previously established Methuen Catholic Collaborative. While this is not the beginning of the Collaborative here in Reading, we will certainly be doing more things together. On June 5th I have a meeting with the Archdiocesan Office for Disciples in Mission to share and understand the experience of other Parishes as they made this transition. What this means for the Priests and Deacon of St. Agnes Parish, is a broader responsibility and expanded demands on our time, as we will now provide all the Sacramental Ministry at St. Athanasius Parish as well as St. Agnes. We will also enjoy the addition of the St. Athanasius Deacons, Neil Sumner and Matt Baltier, who are both top notch. As we just celebrated Pentecost, our way forward is very clear, if we ALL are open to and walk in accordance with the Holy Spirit, we will be successful. It will be an interesting Summer, lots of prayers, patience and understanding will be needed from both Parishes of our Reading Catholic Community as we navigate the changes before us. 3

May 27 ~ Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity As we listen at Mass this week, the message in the scriptures is clear. We have been commissioned, right along with the disciples. Go. Baptize. Teach. All strong imperatives. Equally important – perhaps even more important – is the last line: “…. I am with you always, until the end of the age.” Evangelization is the work of the whole Church – and we’re not alone. He is with us ALWAYS. So let us take Christ’s commissioning to heart and spread the Good News!
