Mount Vernon Community School District News MAY/JUNE 2015

-ALUMNI QUOTEJean Pavelka LiƩs from the Mount Vernon High School class of 1953 started driving the bus for Mount Vernon schools when her daughter was 14. At that Ɵme Jean drove the handicapped bus, and she has conƟnued to this day driving regular routes morning and nights. She currently drives a van to pick up special needs students. Jean says “she loves helping people, and this way she helps the student, the parents, the teachers, and the man at the bus barn.” One slippery day her boss at the bus barn, Denny Gross, spread ice melt from where her school van was parked all the way to her car. He said “I didn’t want anything to happen to her!”

Are the Alumni Association and the Foundation the SAME thing? NO

The Alumni Association was formed to coordinate all-alumni activities. Donations to the Alumni Association are used to support the alumni newsletter, data base, awards and Association activities. The Foundation is a charitable non-profit organization that partners with alumni, businesses, parents, and friends to help support a higher level of educational excellence for students of Mount Vernon Schools. Donations to the Foundation are used to support the school district in ways such as student scholarships and teacher education grants. The Foundation financially supported the Alumni Association in its first years, and continues with financial support of one alumni newsletter annually. DONATIONS TO BOTH ASSOCIATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE

A slime assembly was held as the wrap up to a Pennies for Pa ents campaign in which Washington Elementary students recently par cipated. Students collected coins in an effort to raise $2,750 for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. To kick off the fundraiser Washington Elementary Character Council members visited classrooms and gave students informa on about the fundraiser. Then the collec ng began. For each $250 raised they earned a bucket of slime. Ms. Hassen, Ms. Ramsey, Mr. Turi and Miss Jones volunteered to be part of the sliming. A total of $2,699.33 was raised. Congratula ons and thank you to all who par cipated!

Mount Vernon Middle School band and choir students received a new traveling trophy for the spring - a beau ful, bedazzled, "Golden" music stand! Students were required to complete various challenges in order to enter a drawing for the chance to use the Golden Stand for one rehearsal. 6th grade band students kept track of prac ce minutes and met goals in their lesson book. 7th and 8th grade band students played memorized scales to earn an entry. And 6th grade choir answered music theory and history ques ons for their chance to win. All students who enter the drawing will be eligible for the final prize of an ice cream party at the end of the school year. Remember to keep prac cing and enter the drawing every week! Relay Recess

Lanterns of hope

Relay Recess was recently held at Washington Elementary in an effort to raise awareness about cancer and being healthy. Students walked or jogged around the track to promote healthy living. Prior to the event students created lantern bags with messages of encouragement and hope for people struggling with cancer. BIRTHDAY BOOKS AND CAKE AUCTION Washington Elementary Library reinstated the Birthday Book program at the library that was in existence several years ago. This program helps children celebrate their birthday while, at the same me, helping the elementary school library stay current with popular tles. We are looking for ways to keep our library current as books con nue to get more expensive. We want our library to be invi ng and full of current materials. This is how the program works. Librarians Mary Priske and Megan Casey have created a wishlist on Amazon of book tles they would like in the library either as a new tle or as a replacement book for a Above and below: Students show off their cake crea ons. damaged but popular tle. Parents or guardians can purchase a book from the list prior to their child’s birthday and bring it into the library. Another op on would be to select a book, give the tle and a check for the amount and Mrs. Priske can purchase it. The librarians will process the book for the library, put a birthday s cker into the front cover, and the dona ng student will have the first chance to check out the book. A er they are done sharing the book with their family, it can be returned to the library and it will be put into the collec on for other students to check out. The following link will take you to our Washington Library wish list: h p://amzn.com/sl/1BXQ3SV8V2L0K. Parents or guardians can purchase the book from any store or supplier they like, Amazon is simply a central spot where the list can be managed. When students bring a birthday book into the library, it will be removed from the list. To help fund this program, the library had a cake auc on at the elementary on Monday, April 20. Families and community members were encouraged to create and deliver a book-themed, decorated cake to the elementary library. Cakes were auc oned off in a Mrs. Priske and Mrs. Casey got in silent auc on. Students, staff, parents, and community on the cake auc on also. members were welcome to par cipate in the auc on. In addi on, cakes were judged by elementary volunteers. The winners of the top three places earned a birthday book choice. This opportunity was completely voluntary and was a fun family ac vity. The profits from the cake auc on went to the library fund for purchasing birthday books. There were 20 cakes donated for the fundraiser. This event earned a li le over $400 for the fund. Thank you to everyone that donated a cake!

8TH GRADE TO CAMP COURAGEOUS

On April 15, the eighth grade class volunteered me and effort at Camp Courageous in Mon cello, Iowa. The yearround facility offers respite care and recrea onal ac vi es for people of all ages with disabili es. One of the camp's more recent projects involves a lake for campers to use for canoeing, fishing, and other water ac vi es. While Lake Todd will make recrea onal hobbies more available to all campers, it will also require a lot of upkeep on the camp's end. For example, the 8th graders spent the morning filling in areas of the adjacent hill that had been washed out by water. Students worked in teams to transport dirt down the hillside and to fill in eroded areas. The efforts involved wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, and tampers, and it is hard to say who was more sore the next day: eighth grade students or teachers. Once the hill is restored, the camp hopes to plant a large field of sunflowers as a beau ful backdrop to its new lake.
