Dear Friends I don’t know about you but I often wonder how I can really make a difference for good in the world. I listen to the news or read a newspaper and often feel overwhelmed by the stories I hear, or read, of places or people at war, folk trapped in debt or poverty, and individuals and communities at the mercy of oppressive regimes or even simply governmental policy. But then I’m reminded that actually it’s not within my capability or my remit to tackle all this on my own anyway. It’s a shared responsibility and actually something to just keep working at day by day, bit by bit. So this month - for a start - I can make a difference for good in the world in two very simple and practical ways.
On May 7th I can cast a vote. Thankful that I have a vote and that it will count for something. Thankful that there are people willing to serve in office locally and nationally. And, at the same time praying that those elected to government will serve all peoples and communities well. Then in the week beginning 10th May I can play my part in raising money for Christian Aid who will reach people and communities that I could never hope to reach on my own. I can play my part in helping to transform the lives of men, women and children who are not looking for handouts but who are looking for a way to build a better future and just need some initial support. I’m told that a £5 donation could give Loko, a woman from Ethiopia, a loan to start her own business buying and selling tea and coffee. Running a business from home would change her life and the life of her family.
Why not join me in seeking to make a difference? Don’t forget to vote. And, when the Christian Aid envelope drops through the letter box or you see someone collecting, give generously. You can even give online. With all good wishes, Angela 3

Time to Spring into action Spring is here! It’s time to get out in the fresh air and help give Natland a fresh and cared-for look. As a Natland Volunteer, you can help by taking on ‘stewardship’ of a particular footpath within the parish. This would involve clearing any obstructive woody growth, brambles and nettles, particularly at stiles and gates, and then re-visiting every few weeks until the autumn to deal with re-growth. This should then encourage walkers to make greater use of these paths and their footfall will keep the softer growth in check. Or you could suggest other aspects of parish maintenance that you feel need attention, from individuals or small teams of volunteers, or a more substantial project that could be tackled by a working group. To volunteer, find out more about what is involved, or send in your suggestions, just email Sarah (
[email protected] ) or phone her on 015393 61617. Thank you for offering your time to look after the parish. Sarah and Lois (your parish councillors) 4

Sharing your Story it is designed for ordinary Christians who would like to be a little braver and a little better about helping other connect their life with God. Continuing our series of articles from the World War One Exhibition by John Chandler:
James Francis Inman James Francis Inman was known as Frank. He was born in Natland to William Jackson and Isabella Margaret Inman in the Autumn of 1900. William was 54 and Margaret 35 when Frank was born, the youngest of their six children, one girl and five boys. He was baptised on 30th September 1900 in St. Mark’s Church. At this time the family lived at Church View, Natland but had lived at Powder Works Cottage. William was a stoker at the Gunpowder Works. Frank joined the army towards the end of the war on the 24th September 1918 as 87309 Private James Francis Inman of the 53rd Battalion the Manchester Regiment. This unit had only been formed in the October of 1917 and was previously known as the 74th Training Reserve. It was a unit specially formed for young soldiers. The 53rd Manchester (Young Soldiers) Battalion was permanently based at Conwy, Wales but it is believed that Frank served for a short time with the army of occupation in Germany. He was suffering from tuberculosis and was discharged as an invalid on the 29th October 1919. He was still entitled to the War and Victory Medals. Frank entered Meathop Sanatorium, near Grange, where he died on the 28th August 1920 aged 19. He is buried in St. Mark's Churchyard, Natland in a Commonwealth War Grave and is also recorded on the Natland War Memorial. At his funeral Frank’s body was borne by his old school fellows. The floral tributes included one from the parishioners of Natland and one from his ‘pals.’ There is only one reference in the log book of St. Mark's School, to former pupils who lost their lives in the period of the First World War, and it is to James Francis Inman. When he was buried the children at School (it was next door to the Church then) stood in silence round the School flagpole where the Union Flag flew at half-mast. 7

As we head into spring and hopefully warmer weather, it’s a good time to sort out any debts. Council Tax debts remain the largest debt type across the country, up almost a quarter (24%) on last year, as a ‘priority debt’ you need to pay the debt off before other debts so it’s important to get advice. You don’t need to cope alone with any debt or money worry. Our advisers are just a phone call away, and we have lots of different ways that we can help depending on your circumstances. Together we can look at your budget and see how you could make any savings, identify if you are entitled any other income, and we can work on your behalf in arranging affordable repayments to your creditors. Free, confidential advice and help is available from South Lakes Citizens Advice Bureau on any aspect of debt, consumer problems, benefits, housing, employment and any other problems. We have various outlets across South Lakeland and can also give advice over the phone – telephone 015394 46464 for an appointment and help.
Thank you for all your contributions. Donations are collected from church each Monday morning and it is wonderful to see such a generous response to this appeal. Urgently needed items include:
Coffee, sugar, biscuits, milk (UHT), tinned vegetables, sugar & longlife fruit juice. NO PASTA PLEASE! Micah Whittaker, with a bit of help, writes: Thank you to everyone who helped with our Sunday School Cake Stall for Water Aid. Some people made cakes for us to sell, other people found us some posters and leaflets and other people bought cakes. I saw an advert on TV which made me want to do something to help people who don’t have clean water. Then I thought a cake stall would be a good idea. We raised £100 and this will be enough money to dig a well. Thank you. Micah 9

Tim Bagnall We would like to share with you some moments from the funeral of our son Tim. This was not the traditional type of Church funeral with hymns and prayers, it was a ‘Woodland Burial’. The ceremony was held at the Crouch Valley Meadow Burial ground; a huge field overlooking the River Crouch Estuary, and very beautiful. The field was gradually being planted with ‘native’ trees: one was being planted on each burial site so that eventually it would all become a natural woodland. Tim’s coffin (a cardboard one because it had to be biodegradable, though you might have thought it was made of wood) arrived in the sidecar of a threewheeled Triumph motorbike which was escorted by a group of Tim’s ‘Biker’ friends on their bikes. The sound they all made as they arrived together was powerful! Tim’s brother and some of the bikers carried the coffin to the prepared graveside. Then there followed a dedication of the coffin, with Tim’s friends giving readings and memories of life with Tim. Memories to be treasured. Michael said, “We are saying goodbye to a little boy who travelling for the first time on a dual carriageway said, “why is this called a George carriageway Dad?” We are saying goodbye to a teenager who wore his best Black Sabbath T shirt the day he stood at the lectern in Church to read from the Bible, thereby gaining the admiration of several less bold teenagers at the time! We are saying goodbye to a son, a husband, and a father who loved and cared deeply for his family and friends.” Among the readings were these words which seemed as though they had been especially written for this burial:Cure me with quietness, Bless me with peace: Comfort my heaviness, Stay me with ease, Stillness in solitude Send down like dew:
Mine armour of fortitude Piece and make new: That when I rise again I may shine bright As the sky after rain, Day after night.
At the end of the ceremony everyone threw little sprigs of rosemary on to the coffin. Rosemary for remembrance. Every one left quietly knowing that this is what Tim would have wanted and enjoyed. Michael and Anne Bagnall 16
This year Christian Aid draws our attention again to the vulnerability of people who live right on the edge of survival. Loko Jarso is one such person, and she lives in Ethiopia. There girls born into rural communities often suffer because boys are valued more. When they grow up they have to struggle to provide for large families. Loko Jarso chops firewood. ‘I do it so I don’t have to sit and face my children crying, weeping, and yelling when they have nothing to eat.’ Four times a week, Loko makes a back breaking, eight-hour trip to gather wood. She walks alone, her thin plastic shoes punctured by thorns, afraid she could be attacked by hyenas at any moment. She prays to God as she walks. ‘I ask him to change my life and lead us out of this,’ she says. Here in Natland and Oxenholme we are in a position this Christian Aid Week to lift people such as Loko Jarso out of poverty. Please be prepared to give generously again when the big red envelope arrives, followed shortly after by your friendly neighbourhood collector.

Safety advice from Norma Singleton …... Health and safety issues are much more a part of everyday life than perhaps they once were. How to stay safe in the world today:Avoid riding in cars because they are responsible for 20% of all fatal accidents. Do not stay at home because 17% of all accidents occur at home. Avoid walking on streets or footpaths because 14% of all accidents occur to pedestrians. Avoid travelling by air, rail or water because 16% of all accidents involve these forms of transport. Of the remaining 33%, 32% of all deaths occur in hospitals. Above all else, avoid hospitals. You will be pleased to learn that only .001% of all deaths occur in worship services in church and these are usually related to previous physical disorders. Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place for you to be at any given point in time is at church. Bible study is safe too. The percentage of deaths during Bible study is even less. So, for safety’s sake - attend church and read your Bible - it could save your life!

The Annual Parish Meeting: What’s it all about? Until I became Chair of Natland Parish Council about a year ago and started to take responsibility for such things, I was a little vague about the status of the ‘Annual Assembly of the Parish Meeting’ – even though David Peters, the outgoing Chair, had, of course, explained it very clearly to the new parish councillors during our first year on the council. (There was a lot to take in!) So I did a bit of research and thought I would share it in the pages of Parish News in case any of you might be similarly baffled when the invitation falls through your letterbox in the first week of May. In parishes which don’t have a parish council, parish meetings are an example of ‘direct democracy’ – a rare thing in this country where we are in the habit of electing other people to do the work of making decisions for us. In Natland we do (of course!) have a parish council but although the Chair of the council does convene the meeting, it does not ‘belong’ to the parish council. Anyone can speak on any parish matter (without prior notice) and questions are decided by a simple vote of everyone present. The parish council does not have to do whatever is decided (it may not be feasible in some respect when looked into in more detail), but as we are there to represent the interests of residents we will certainly take forward whatever we can. So the Annual Parish Meeting is your meeting. (Parish councillors don’t even have to attend, although I’m hoping they all will.) This is the only scheduled event of the year at which all the parishioners of Natland are encouraged to make suggestions (and perhaps decisions) about the future of our community. In 2003 and 2013, the Parish Plan teams asked for your thoughts about Natland (if you were living in Natland at the time) but it shouldn’t be something that we do only once every ten years. If you’re new to the parish, it would be a great chance to meet your neighbours and get a feel of what goes on – as many of the parish groups give short reports on their activities over the past year and their plans for the next year – and if you’re not, it might just be a chance to raise something that concerns you and see whether the council or other residents are able to help in any way. 20
This year Peter Barfoot (Headteacher) and members of the St Mark’s School, school council, are going to give us a wide-ranging update about the school, with an opportunity for questions and a look ahead at future events, including ones in which we may have a chance to get involved. And there’s an opportunity to stay and talk to one another a little longer over a glass of wine (or juice) afterwards. Please join us at 7.30pm on Thursday 21st May if you can for a little celebration of our local community. Lois Sparling, Chair, Natland Parish Council

Please pray for all those who are ill. Please pray for those who mourn. Please pray for those preparing to be baptised, confirmed or married over the coming months.
PRAYERS
‘We should use our votes thoughtfully, prayerfully and with the good of others in mind, not just our own interests.’ We need to remember that the Church has every right to enter into the political arena—and indeed to remember our responsibility towards each other in society. Please pray for the General Election; for politicians and political parties; for all who will vote. Please pray for wisdom as you vote.
A Prayer for Ascension Day by Janet Nightingale When we stand gazing upwards, bring us down to earth: with the love of a friend through the songs of the sorrowing in the faces of the hungry. When we look to you for action, demand some work from us. by the touch of your fire your glance of reproof your fearful longing.
