MCC Tigers to host Down syndrome awareness night on Jan. 25 against No. 5 Indian Hills Submitted by Roger Brown: We are excited to be given the opportunity to work with Marshalltown Community College to promote their men’s basketball game on January 25th at 7PM to raise funds and awareness for Down syndrome. The press release is below. The event will also be promoted in numerous papers and on radio stations.

How the money is raised: · ½ of each ticket will be given to this cause. Tickets are $10 each so $5 is donated to Down syndrome support and awareness programs. It would be great if we could pack the place.

· Organizations may donate with 100% of the funds being donated to this cause. If you’d like to make a donation, contact Roger Brown at 641-751-2848 and he will pick up your donation or you can drop it off at Iowa River Brewing Company. You also can drop it off at the college and be sure to designate it is for this event. Checks can be made out to “MCC – Jan 25th” and we can be sure to get a tax deduction letter to you.

· Organizations may donate by designating a class or school and purchasing a number of tickets for that class. (such as $100 for 10 tickets and MCC will manage the sign up list that night). Contact Roger Brown at 641-751-2848 for more information.

! · All donors will have their name or company name read aloud at the game, but amounts will not be revealed. ! · A signed team basketball will be raffled off – tickets are $1 and will be available at the game. ! Activities at the game: · “I Have a Voice” gallery will be on display in the gymnasium lobby.

· Arrive early as 30 minutes prior to the game the cheerleaders will help rehearse a cheer with those children wishing to participate – cheer to be done during the game.

! · Those children will also be able to stand with the cheerleaders and cheer during the game. !

· Attendees with Down syndrome will have the option of signing up to have their name read during time outs and can stand up to be recognized during the game.

· There will be a sign-up list for those who are interested in learning more about participating in the math and literacy tutoring programs for people with Down syndrome.

!

· There will also be a sign-up list for those people interested in learning more about volunteering to support local Down syndrome programs. As part of our plans to bring literacy and math tutoring to the Marshalltown area we will need volunteers that are interested in being a part of changing other’s lives. Training would be scheduled at a later date. (continued next page)

! · During the game, promotional basketballs highlighting the night will be thrown to the crowd. ! · After the game, a huge group photo will be taken with the team and the attendees with Down syndrome.

! · Posters will be signed by the players and given away. !

MCC Tigers to host Down syndrome awareness night on Jan. 25 against No. 5 Indian Hills On Saturday, January 25, the Marshalltown Community College men’s basketball team will help raise awareness for Down Syndrome as the Tigers host No. 5 Indian Hills Community College at 7:00 PM at the Student Activity Center. Head coach Brynjar Brynjarrson and the Tigers will team up with Roger Brown, the owner of Iowa River Brewing Company to support GiGi’s Playhouse of Des Moines. GiGi’s Playhouse, a nationally known organization, supports families in developing high expectations for their children with Down Syndrome. The organziations aims to work on specific skill development in several areas including speech and language, social development, and fine and gross motor skills. The Tigers will promote Down syndrome awareness at the game by donating 50 percent of all ticket sales to the cause. Tickets for the game will be $10 at the door. Children 12 and under will be free. Promotions will be held throughout the duration of the game as well, including a raffle for an autographed team basketball. Tickets for the raffle are $1 per entry. Local families that are affected by Down syndrome are encouraged to come out to support the cause and enjoy the game.

The money donated will be used locally to help bring more information and parent support literature to the Marshalltown OB/GYN, PC as well as the Obstetrics Department at the Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center. The funds also plan to be used to help develop a satellite program for those families interested in literacy and math tutoring for their children with Down syndrome.

GiGi’s Playhouse will be on hand at the game with many children from the organization. The children will have a photograph session with MCC players and cheerleaders prior to the start of the game. Following the game, children will have the opportunity to meet the players and have an autograph session. Kids will also have the chance to come onto the court for a post-game shoot around.
