MDAW’s ANNUAL HUNT HAD A SILVER LINING After a stormy Friday in the Lacey/Olympia area, Saturday, September 24, 2016 turned out to be a pretty nice day for the Metal Detecting Association of Washington’s Annual Picnic and Hunt at Green Diamond Recreation Area in Grapeview, WA which is some 10 miles west of Shelton, WA. The gate opened at 9 am and registration started at 10 am. By 10 am, a crowd of Th’ers were gathering around to get started on the hunt.

minute timed hunt. At the start signal, Th’ers swarmed out onto the field in a mad dash to find the elusive, buried coins. Once you located the coin with your detector coil, you had to find the exact spot where the coin was buried and that required a pinpointer, which many TH’ers had at the ready, gave you the exact spot to dig the coin. This required you to get down on one or both knees to retrieve the coin. Doing this for 45 minutes could mean getting up and down as many as 50 or more times for the faster TH’ers. Usually, you feel the aftermath of this type of exercise the next day, like why am I so sore. After the hunt TH’ers moved back to the staging area to sort their coins, by that I mean, looking for the painted nickles. A line started to form as Ron and Bev Sharer started handing out prizes to those with the painted nickels. During this time Dee and Rick Sperling were selling raffle tickets for the swell prizes that were donated to the hunt by major detector companies and the silver coins furnished by the MDAW.

The hunt organizer, Ron Sharer, organized a seeding/planting party to hide coins, plain nickles and dimes, and painted nickles. This was a tedious job in its self as the coins had to be buried by making a small slit in the ground with a knife and sliding the coin into the slit and tamping it down with the foot. The painted nickles were the ones you wanted to find, because they had numbers that indicated the prize you would win, such as silver rounds, silver halves, quarters and dimes, detector carry bags, t-shirts, flashlights, water bottles, digging sets, back packs, digging tools and many other prizes. There were a lot of swell prizes to be won in the raffle; silver halves, quarters, dimes, coin sets along with a metal detector, pinpointer, headphones and carry pouches. At 11:30, 27 TH’ers, representing MDAW, PSTHC, CTC PTHC, OPTH and the Outlaws, lined the field where several hundred plain and painted nickels and dimes were planted, held their detectors above their head in anticipation of the start signal to begin a 45

About the same time, lunch was announched and a second line formed to partake in some fine foods, namely, fried chicken, bean, potato and macaroni salads, fruit, cold cuts and a cheese cake. It was all real tasty. The raffle offered a metal detector as first prize and it was won by Caroline Townsend from PSTHC.Some other swell prizes that were mentioned earlier in the article, were awarded. There was plenty to eat, a lot of good conversation and fun to be had by all. A BIG
