Four battered women being housed at the TESSA shelter for women met with four L3 women at a coffee shop to break the ice. The members then took the women shopping for clothing to help them start a new, healthier chapter of their life. Other L3 women went fly fishing for Angling for Recovery, an organization that provides help to women recovering from all types of cancer. That’s how the first L3 Women’s Getaway started. Held at the scenic Garden of the Gods Club, co-chairs Joan Litle and Linda Galston welcomed 23 L3 members to learn ways to improve their health. From Dr. Mimi Guarneri, noted cardiologist and founder of Scripps Integrated Medicine, to the healing touch of Rauni King, to how Native Americans connect to nature and healing through the medicine wheel, we connected minds, bodies and spirits for a healthier life. A panel with Dr. Andrew Gross, Director of Rheumatology Clinical at UCSF, a cooking demo and lunch with Garden of the Gods' Chef Nick, and an early morning Tai Chi session added

From the Executive Director Are you an "engaged" L3 member? During the Asheville retreat I started wondering: "What do our members consider L3 engagement to be?" Is it as easy as attending a retreat or is it when members connect on a deeper level through conversation and experiences shared at an L3 function? So, I'll ask you..."What is engagement in L3?" What was it that made you feel connected? Click here to email me your answer. Here are some definitions of engagement: • an appointment, especially to speak or perform • the period of time when marriage is planned or promised • the point at which the fencers are close enough to join blades
variety to our days. The ladies also had a lot of fun. But if you want to know which one of the L3 women is a pilot, which got kicked out of a corporate event for laughing too much or which stole a turkey out of the oven at a dinner party...well, we can’t tell you. What happens on a women’s getaway, stays on a women’s getaway. However, we do recommend you visit the L3 website to see the"award-winning" lyrics the L3 ladies created to “Home on the Range.” Our final night was a perfect evening at the Galston home. As we recapped what we learned from the experts, it was clear the group had connected as friends. Thanks to Vicki Sebastiani, members auctioned items made by impoverished women in Africa and Mexico who are helped by the nonprofit Aid to Artisans. Each member was asked what changes she was going to make in her life as a result of this trip. The inspiring answers let us know that many more L3 Women’s Getaways will be happening - and soon. Here’s what a couple of members had to say: "I loved the purpose this program provided for L3 women to come together in an interesting location to take personal time to focus on health, fellowship and relaxation!" "I felt it was a 10+ and look forward to attending many more!!" Continue reading... Basking in the Awesome-ness of Asheville

Against a beautiful backdrop of fall foliage, L3 members gathered on the Sammons Balcony of The Grove Park Inn on Wednesday evening for a welcome reception to kick off the fall retreat. As members laughed and chatted, it quickly became apparent – no ice breakers needed here, folks. Danny Bejarano, who attended the retreat with his wife Talia, noted that this was one of the best things about the retreat. "As always," he said, "we loved the opportunity to meet new members and reconnect with existing members." In addition to cultivating relationships, members attended panels, workshops and seminars on issues ranging from “How do I keep humor in my life?" to "Intimacy… and yes, we mean sex." While topics varied, the theme of health and wellbeing dominated the retreat, especially during a full day of speakers at the lovely Walnut Cove Wellness Center. "We enjoyed the focus on wellness, the visit to the wellness center, and the resources that address us there – particularly those that had to do with the heart," Danny said. "Everything you learn about your health is important and I took a lot of take-home value from that – many things we’d like to try." For others, the highlight of the retreat was a night of dinner and costumed-dancing at the Biltmore Estate. Patty Kent said it was the best party she has ever attended. As the music swirled, members packed the dance floor and let loose. The wisdom, friendships and laughter experienced in Asheville made this a life-changing experience members will remember for years to come. Continue reading...

1. Who are your role models, and why? My Dad is the greatest man I know and I just returned from celebrating his 94th birthday. He is a genius, a master charmer, filled with guts, and is the warmest, most loving dad a son could have. A role model and inspiration for all points of the compass. 2. What is a little known fact about you? I shot an elephant when I was 19. 3. What is your most memorable L3 experience? Watching Richard Kent sing Danny Boy in Asheville. 4. What are three things you can't live without? I have had some losses in my life and so I have learned that you can live without some things and you can even get used to it and be happy. That said, it would be very hard to live without reading a book every day. L3 Forums take on the Windy City 5. What are your goals for the future? I have written a screenplay about Frank Lloyd Wright and hope to get the film produced.

The Inaugural L3 Forum met in early August in Chicago starting with cocktails and dinner on a Thursday evening. While Forum discussions are confidential, the first topic taken up by the Forum on Friday morning related to the relationships surrounding spouses of children and their in-laws - an ongoing topic for most couples and one that proved lively for the Forum. Many members conveyed their experiences for the benefit of others. Friday evening, the Forum was treated to a tour of Astor Street and had a wonderful dinner at the home of Bill and Joan Brodsky. On Saturday morning, Professor Tony Jones led the Forum on a private tour of the Art Institute and Millennium Park during pre- L3 Forum attendees at the Art Institute opening hours. The final Forum meeting was held Saturday afternoon at Rod Lubeznik'sapartment overlooking Lake Michigan. Members touched on the topic of transitioning into retirement and how to make it effective, another ongoing issue for most L3ers. Dinner at the Ria restaurant in the fashionable Elysian Hotel topped off a memorable first meeting for the Forum. The next meeting will be in Palm Springs in March. Plans are to have two meetings each year at locations selected by a host couple. L3 Women's Forum A number of the women who attended the Women's Fall Getaway expressed interest in participating in a Women's Forum. If you are interested in learning more or joining a Forum, please email Joan Litle and Linda Galston.
